Seeking info on 1993 90 exhaust

My Audi has a major exhaust leak that I want to get repaired. From inspecting the problem I see that one of the pipes directly behind the catalytic converters has separated from the converter at the joining point. This happened because the bolts have rusted through the mount on the above mentioned pipe, so I expect it will have to be replaced. Looking further along toward the muffler it seems that the entire exhaust system behind the converter is made up of 2-3 parts, and it appears that at least one weld has been used to connect these pieces.

I am trying to figure out how many parts there are and what they are called. I will be bringing my Audi to a repair shop and would like to know what I’m dealing with beforehand to avoid getting ripped off. I was unable to find any exhaust system diagrams for my car on the internet. Any information that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.

When you say "behind" the cat... are you talking about damaged "Before" the cat?

Otherwise, easiest and least expensive way out... as well as a "performance" solution would be to get a custom exhaust from the cat back.

If you are talking about damage between the engine and cat...then we have a problem Houston....

Best bet would be to check Audifans or post a wanted thread there for anyone looking to sell that exhaust piece. Or for someone parting a 90...

The problem is with the part that is between the cat and the muffler. Thank God it’s not in the other direction.

I am talking about where part(s) 12 connects to the cat. That is where the eye holes in the flange (I think it’s called that) on part 12 have rusted out to the point where the bolts have popped through. This has allowed the catalytic converter and part 12 to separate.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to replace part(s) 12 rather then get a custom exhaust?

^^ As long as the connecting flanges (on both ends) are OK.

Question is, can you find that part by itself? You mentioned there are 2-3 connecting parts before the muffler, are those also damaged?

Sure you could replace it in sections...

The other couple of pieces before the muffler look fine. But you never really know till you get the stuff apart.

You make a good point about the availability of single parts.
