    Can't get Windshield grime/film off - Help?

    Here's the story

So last summer when I was home from college It was like 105+ degrees one day (Virginia Beach VA) and my mom had the guy that usually washes her car do mine. When I went outside he was washing the two cars at the same time (shitty). I noticed that there were soap suds all over my windshield and the windshield itself was kind of steaming. I had applied Rain-X a couple of weeks before hand and saw that the suds were beading up in the normal Rain-X fashion.

So since that day, anytime there is any condensation, moisture, rain, or even in certain lighting angles and at night (street lights absolutely suck), I can see watermarks and it almost covers my whole windshield (kind of look like stretch marks). Its gritty to the touch on the outside and feels like sandpaper. I really don't know what it is.

I've tried every Glass cleaning product I can get my hands on. Invisible Glass, 20/20, etc. I even went to a local glass supplier and got one of their employes to look at it. He told me to buy this abrasive glass cleaner. I did and used it, again NO Luck. Vinegar and old newspapers, NO Luck.

Anyone ever heard of this or have any suggestions?? (other than a new windshield)

    --Thanks in advance --

Have you tried a clay bar on it? Might be worth a shot.

You could also try scraping it with a razor blade. Spray it with Windex and scrape away.

try WD-40 as well...removes bugs really well, so that and an ice scraper might clean the film.

I have the same problem on my windshield and have no luck trying to rid myself of the problem.

    So a razor blade... seriously?

no need for razor blade - i did that once and scratched it

get a thick like compound - clay bar would work but don't use water based compound as it'll just react with the rain-x

then use ur ice scraper and scrape it - then wash it off - should go away

I see the 'scratches' left behind from the ice scraper I used this winter.

So claybar and some other lubricant compound might work eh?

Re: Can't get Windshield grime/film off - Help?

Not using Rain-X anymore. Ordering a set of the Bosch Aero Wipers. But I want to try and get this off before I put the new wipers on.

So consensus is Razor blade, Clay Bar, and maybe mineral spirits?

Sounds good I'll try them tomorrow and let you guys know what happened. Keep the recommendations coming.

    thanks

    Glass stove top cleaner!!!...

I have a solar panel that had salt water spots all over it. Windex, Goo-Gone, none of that stuff worked. But the oven top cleaner made it look brand new again.

Use a clay bar its safe, it is an inherently mild rubbing compound. Clay bar is alot safer than a razor blade. The Easy-off is a good idea, because it works on my Glass stove, but watch out for your paint and plastic with the over spray.

That's not a bad idea! Also try acetone or Goo gone. If you can't get it off with that shit, get a new windshield!

Ok, Windex with a razor usually works (or any other sort of lubricant).

I've done it on several vehicles and had it come out all right. But, you are hamfisted, forget this idea b/c you'll probably screw it up.

Your next choice is to sand it with 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000+, then buff it. If that doesn't work (it will), your windshield wasn't going to get clean period.

Re: Can't get Windshield grime/film off - Help?

So it is possible for a Windshield to get so dirty that it can't be cleaned and only replaced? I would have thought that you could always use some chemical or something.

I'm going to try the Clay bar and Razor blade+windex this weekend

Glass Cook-top cleaner didn't work. It kind of took the grittiness down so it feels much smoother but still can't get it off.

Another product that has worked for me, is Castrol Super Clean to lubricate the clay bar. If you try it keep it off the paint!

    Stop using the Rain-X.

Use a razor blade + any cleaning agent.
