The wife was telling me about a rattle she's been hearing for a few days. So, I went out for a ride and was dragging out the gears and BOOM!
After getting the flashlight out, I saw that #2 rod had punched the block on both sides. After digging into the mess, I saw that the wrist pin had ripped out of the bottom of the piston!
Anyone have this happen?
Pics to come tonight.
Now it gives me an excuse to get a better motor for the wife.
When your spirit is floating down that tunnel, towards the light, You know what's behind the light?
It's not God, it's me. And I'm gonna kick your poncey soul All the way back down the tunnel 'till you choke on your own fucked up ribs! Now, Wake the fuck up!
Cat cams? how much does this help our motors? I was always thinking about cams, as my honda improved greatly with a set...
Search here, the B6 forum, and vwvortex for more info. They aren't a huge leap and need a good sized turbo to show any real benefit. They move the powerband up and to the right slightly and are good for maybe 5-10% more power.

We cannot achieve the future by being timid. It requires aggressive imagination.
It wasn't a load rattle. I wasn't getting on it when it blew, just drug out the gears to see if the rattle was harmonic. Top of 3rd gear, rattle louder, BOOM.
No sludge what so ever.
Don't think JB or spackle will help this.
This is what we have done with the car.
atp gt28rs upgrade,SBC clutch,mika tuned software,550 cc,p+p intake,atp fuel rail,short shifter,3 in down pipe,2.5"awe borla exhaust,abd front mount cooler,adj fpr,12 lb flywheel,oil catch can,pure ms upper strut brace,neuspeed drive train stabilizer,power gasket,turbo xs rfl bov,carbon fiber engine cover,h+r coilovers,walpro 255fuel pump,awe vent boost gauge, manual boost controller
Tried to get this to pop up in my sig, but don't know what's up with it.
Yes, this is the wife's car. After I told her that I found the rattle and the motor blew...she said "Can we make the car faster?"
She loves the car and I believe she loves it more than I do.
Bad thing was, I was getting ready to send her down to a race school for the day in Savannah. Good thing it happened here and not on the race track.
Thanks for the input. AZ Rocks!

i have a 97 a4 aeb and had something similar happen last summer to me in nyc. original aeb had 81k on it and well-maintained. pretty stock except for the apr 93 chip.
my problems i believe started when my original k03 turbo wastesgate died so i bought a new one from ecstuning. had it installed and turns out that the turbo housing itself actually had a hairline crack in it so i still needed new one.
went with a k04 turbo, but kept the apr 93 chip for k03. asked around and several ppl on aw said that they had similar setups w/o problems and the only danger was not get max hp from k03 chip.
after ~ 8 months with this setup, i was exiting the l.i.e. to get back into the city and BOOM. car died while i was crossing an intersection. i pull over to the right and then go to the front of the car just in time to watch and hear both the engine oil and pink coolant splooge it's entire load under my car.
had the car towed to my mechanic (if you own an audi, better have the aaa plus :)) and then he said it didn't sound good. 2 days later, i'm told that my engine grenaded itself and threw 2 rods out the block. engine mounts damaged, radiator punched hole, etc. it was a very extensive and worst damage that they had ever seen.
the biggest mistake i made was getting it fixed. so much trouble- tried to ordered a used engine. got a decent price for motor with ~43k, asked specifically for auto/tip b/c of the crack issue, but was sent manual. they said sorry. (took them 2 months to pick up the engine with the charge still on my credit card).
they had another auto ~50k. engine puller guy had some family emergency and wouldn't be back for a wk. time and cc charges still mounting (and having to rent cars). when he gets back, they are about to pull the engine. 1 cylinder compression is way down vs the other 3 and can't get it to start. no go.
they said they would pick up the other engine and then refund my cc (2 months + and i had to file a dispute with my cc before i got it) pain.
then i discovered you could get a brandnew, audi/vw remanufactured aeb with 0 miles and 1 yr warranty for $3000 (worldimpex if you live in east-john/ 1stvwparts-zeb in west). $1500 core charge. that became an issue b/c of the 2 holes punched in the block.
finally, they both checked with vw/audi and they said that as long as the engine damage was internal, then they would accept the block for core charge.
so i figured ~ $3000 + $1200 install + fluids + hoses, i'd basically have a new engine installed for $4500.
after waiting for things to come in, etc- the other damage was discovered during the install- radiator, engine brackets, etc. things started adding up and my finally bill (honest, family friend owned mechanic), i ended up spending $6k on getting the car back up and running.
in retrospect, it seemed that the apr k03 chip made my k04 engine run too lean and that made the engine grenade itself. so i put in a stock ecu (ended having to order 3 b/c of the various incompatiabilities of the different letters and 1 p box that actually turned out to be bad) and sold the apr chipped one. afraid of the stresses of the agressive programming and giac k04 software is too much $$$$. so i'm sticking with stock ecu.
long story, but hope that puts perspective before you get started.
my buddies wife drove an evo 8 until he got it running low 12's.
He bought her an 06 a4tqm to replace her old evo 8. I thought
most girls liked diamonds? Looked like a full 28rs kit not elim.
Diamonds don't go fast. Let us know what you end up putting in.

did you have a afr guage installed to see what was going on, I have the mika tune too and my car has 185,000 miles on it and this really scares me lol to even drive the car but my car drives very strong for now but it was running very very lean for a while, so I would really check that out when you get the motor done again

mikas tune is bad. especially if you have that many mile on the engine.
well its been almost a year since I've had the kit on, so I'm just going to keep driving this motor hard like I always do until it blows and then I'll get anothor motor and build it for gt30 or bigger turbo

I would get alittle lean towards 30+psi of boost. At one time we were maxing out the 35psi gauge out. Not good. Would get some detination at hight rpms.
The mika tune would be good if ATP would have better customer relations. I kept getting some Asia woman that kept telling me that I needed a bigger turbo. I was calling about running rich at idle. Couldn't really understand what she was saying either. 034 runs the Mika tune also. Seems like there customer relations is a lot better.
I believe once we get the new motor in, I'll be using UNI. Bob at QED said that they would be able to get everything tuned in. I really want to get a standalone for her car just for better tuning.
Anyone use a 034 fms?

wow thats a lot of boost... even for a fully built motor!!!
Im off Dorchester road ... about 10 miels from you. Id like to see this monster once it'sdone being built!
Yes, the daily driver was pushing 30+ of boost. This is my wife's car and she is wanting it faster. She would call me every other day telling me about her adventures going to work with hondas, acuras, Rx-7's and other Audi's. I've raced mustangs and other domestic cars. Just ate them up. Wish I could have seen their faces as a WAGON was leaving them in the dust. People around here don't expect a wagon to move as this one did.
Here's a link to some races the good friend took before we got it.
The first two clips are her car and the last was just a favorite and is in deed a S4.
I am upset about the motor, but no need to wallow in it. Pick up the pieces and move on.
We had the car sold as is, and we had another Avant picked out, but she love the car so much, she wanted to put another motor in to it. I think that is pretty cool. Most girls would be looking forward to another car...Don't you think. My wife just wants it faster. She says this is her toy since I have mine
