Also would like to comment on the great write-up. I've done all my own system installs to this point and pretty much have a good idea and what you did. I'll be getting ready to install my Pioneer D3 in the next couple of weeks and will also be running new speaker wire as well. So glad to hear there is almost NO room to squeeze one through there! Oh well, I'll get it to work......
I wanted to ask one thing though, you mentioned running your RCA's down the middle of the car. How did you do this? Did you remove any seats? What's te easiest way to accomplish this?
/\ the back seat comes up, and the rca and power cable can be fed under the carpet in the hump. the easiest way.
But how the heck can you feed them all the way up to the front console down the middle? close hanger em'? Seem like a real tight fit when you get to the center console area......

The carpet is the hardest part... it's so tight that everything else is feels easy there is enough space in the center console area and so on. For the carpet I used big screwdrivers to bend it open so I could slip the wires through, it wasn't easy I can tell you
Would it be feasible to replace the factory sub with a better one in the same location?
First, you need to find a decent free-air sub, which is a challenge in and of itself. Then it would also need to be ~8.5in and really shallow. In theory it sounds like a good idea to upgrade the subwoofer and put it in the same place for the sake of space, but it really just doesn't work out well.
You would be much better off and much happer IMO if you went the same route that TJHUB did with his build. You could also always look into some of the really small sub/amp packages out there as well.
aha... i was wondering about this... i've done installs of varying degrees on 10 or so cars, but i've been a bit reluctant to pull my previous & current A4s apart. maybe in a few months or so when i kill the Bose system with my drum & bass and dubstep hehe

I can't wait to install my sub now that I've found this thread. As a noob, however, 'grounding' should have been explained as I have no idea how that's done. I'm not doing it but I wanted to point it out.
Where can I find a guide for the rear amp? I want to pull the remote from it. Also, anyone, anywhere do a how to remove the rear sub guide? I have no idea how to take it out. And can I tap my LOC into the rear OEM sub?

Hey man, GREAT write-up! I just so happened to search and find TeddyBGame as well for my project, and man, what a great guy to deal with. If ANYONE is having thoughts of doing something along these lines, they need to hit him up. The man's a genius!
TJ, if you see this, check out my thread on the custom install I just had done (search "A Rare AZ Mod...") - crammed a stealth-installed JL 10W7 into the left-hand compartment of the rear section of the trunk (the one w/ the plastic, not the net). These guys' work is top-notch, and I would be remiss to not share the ideas I got from them on the install. I was referred to you by "bcramer" on the AZ sites.
Once again, bravo on the write-up! Here's some teaser pics :
( V This one gives a great angle to view how big the actual enclosure is; it extends all the way to the RIGHT edge of the plastic vent):

does that w7 have enough air space in that compartment to perform they way it should? JL FTW!

I really like your setup.. I want to do something like you have. Where did you get the box for that sub?? if you could point me at the right direction that would be great..
Thank you for the great write-up. It made my life a lot easier.
-teddybgame harness worked well
-Use of the old speaker as a speaker pod was top notch and worked perfectly for the Type X's I installed. The Dremel is a wonderful tool, eh?
-Recommendation to remove the glove box to run power wire and provide access to the back of the receiver was very useful.
In my case I was able to mount the crossovers for the speakers on the door. This allowed me to run a single wire to each door. There was *just enough* room to run a 16ga 2 conductor wire under the connector. No modification necessary in my case.
