Here's how much shaving it was done. The walls by Cylinder 1 and 2 (going from the right to left)needed the most shaving. Notice how you have to shave off the re-einforcement of Cylinder2's walls at the bottom of the pic so that the rod can clear.
Another issue is the 4th oil squirter, it's originally placed higher so that it clears the crank trigger wheel, i grinded off about 1.5mm off the corner of the squirter and added a 1.5mm copper shim to make sure that it has both clearence and seals.
"How you gon' dowwngrayyde?"...jk. Looking good gotta go for a spin when it's done, which looks to be pretty soon, correct? When do you plan on it running?

bro, this isn't like a clear-corner mod. a write up would be a huge undertaking and a waste of time because of all of the little things that need to be done. This is truly something best left to people who know what they're doing. I'm contemplating just sourcing parts myself and having someone "who knows" do it for me.
hope I didn't come off as a dick but this isn't something some one with minimal knowledge should try. (I'm including myself in the minimal knowledge group)

I don't think you're going to come off as a dick at all. that's the thing with AZ--people are here to learn and pass knowledge often times through debate.
that said, I think you make a great point. however, I also think that an extremely high level write up would be useful. possibly something that sums up in concise language the parts, build, and basic steps. yes, the threads contain all this information but so far some of it is hard to follow and as they grow become more convoluted.

all good points, maybe I jumped the gun a bit. A basic writeup would be very nice but like I said, there's so many little things that would not be discussed that you'd still have to hunt for alot of info.

Damn, bro, you're closer than I am! I was going to start sourcing parts myself in about 2 months, hoping to maybe have something done by the end of summer 07.

Well, I'm already BT and i've got the supporting parts already. I just need rods, custom pistons, etc. Then I can start looking for a larger turbo.

Oh no man, you didnt come off as a dick, I was just suggesting that someone do a write-up for people who know what they are doing. I understand that this should be left for those people who know what they are doing, however with a write-up, it could save time, you know... if that makes any sense at all. Its like changing a tranny, I can do it and ive done it, however I used a write-up for reference, and it took less time, does that make any sense?

makes perfect sense

2Liter 16v Intermediate shaft and gear on the left vs the 1.8 (KR/PL/AEB) counterpart and gear on the right. The gear in the end of the 2Liter shaft is smaller and clears the 4th rod, however the loose gear which drives the oil pump will not fit in the bore since it measures over 40mm and the bore is 30mm and change as seen in the following pic:
The smaller 1.8 oil pump drive gear fits the bore as we already know
[img]
I also tried to put the 2L oil pump drive gear from the bottom but like i said earlierthere just isn't enough area in that bore for a larger gear to fit there.
Don't have pics of the modded 1.8 Intermediate shaft, it'll go to get machined today and i'll have pics later this week
thanks

i gotta stay out of this thread. AZ is putting ideas in my head again. thats why i havent been on much lately. oddly enough i havent spent any money on the car either. funny how that works!

'03 Audi A4 Avant, lightly modded My name is John.
is it me or is the thread updates on this like 100x more exciting than X-mas?
eh, i don't care if it is just me, im lovin it!!!
i have a broken wrist and cannot even begin to move my pinky, let alone work the home keys. so if my posts lack grammer/punctuation and that iritates you, simply, fuck off
The 2L 16v Intermediate shaft is the only one that clears the rod, howeverm its oil pump dive gear is bigger than the 1.8 oil pump drive gear and the gear (2liter oil pump drive gear) wont fit inside of the 1.8 block.
here's the 1.8 oil pump drive gear below:
measure 30something odd millimeters vs the 2liter counterpart that measures 40 something millimeters. You might be able to open up the bore in the block some more to make it fit *if* there's enough material there and also, *if* the bore in the block were bigger then the 2liter 16v stuff would just drop in.
Keep in mind that i say 2liter 16v and not just 16v because both shafts are 16v shafts, one's 1.8 the other 2liter.
let me know if that was clear.
thanks
Paul
Did you shave the shaft itself? I've heard they're not exactly straight from the factory.
Now that I think back to when I built my motor, I used the AEB shaft in the ABA block.
When I got everything together, and tried to turn it over, something was hitting, but a little force, and it turned over, and never hit again. Since I had stock rods, it may have hit the gear, but not by much, self-clearancing lol.

Aftermarket rods would probably need more room.
I only had the shaft smoothed out because it's really rough from factory, they do tend to wobble a whole lot and smoothing it out helps prevent it. I've tried a PL (1.8 16v, same as AEB) shaft in a 9A and it barely hit the stock rod so i stopped and swapped everything back. Guess your setup was self clearing for sure

Other than slappying on the head and accessories, none. Waiting on the crank bolt to arrive from vw, had a few laying around (new) but can't find them now.
I will have parts by friday and will try to take some more pics.
