I posted this on AudiSport but i thought i should do it here as well.
Id like to use this thread to start documenting different setups and finding out which setup works best.
Some people like slammed and tucked, while others care more about drivability and maintaing almost close to stock setups. My predicament is that I lean more towards the stance , i want a lil poke,, but i, more of a coilover/handling guy and still need the ability to tear up the mountain roads aggressively. On my previous car i ran an aggressive setup with wide wheels, and although it looked good, it killed the drive. This time around id like to find that happy medium between stance and driveability
This thread isnt about personal preference, and i hope it doesn't get derailed because of that and/or Mono.Pur . The outcome of this thread is to document different setups and find out
the most aggressive setup you can run without any fender mods,
which setups required fender rolling,
and what setups work for slammed/stanced look.
it also seems like the sedan s3 can run a more aggressive setup than the hatch
Issues with rear wheels hitting struts on wider wheels. (has anyone succesfuly run a 10.5?)
Oil pan issues on lowered cars similar to the 8P guys.
If your interested in posting your setups, please provide wheels specs tire sizes, suspensions mods, fender mods etc.
So far, Rabbit222's car is running the most aggressive setup (that ive come a cross) on this site.
His specs:
20x8.5+40 plus a 10mm spacer
235/3520 tire size.
No fender mods, no rubbing.

I think his car is one of the nicest S3's out there. There are more aggressive setups out there, but the Ch-R titanium wheels on sepang blue S3 go unbelievably well together that. Plus i understood that this setup has no rubbing issues and maintains driveability. Win.
Now out in the land of the rising sun, probably one of the first modified S3's and the only true "aggressive" setup out there.

This set up is super aggressive and not for the faint of heart. Those rear fenders were pulled out 15mm to accommodate the larger wheels. I think this looks bad ass. definitely an aggressive setup.
Another Setup in Japan that has me going nuts is this one. unfortunately i couldnt find the exact specs but the setup seems similar to Rabit222's setup.

S3 Sedan vs S3 Hatch.
The sedan seems like it can take a lower offset wheel, which is strange, since they are the same car/chassis. Its possible that the since most panels are different, that the S3 sedan has wider fenders.
My assumption is based on the MTM and BBS AUdi S3 that they showcased the BBS XA wheels on. In 19" those wheels only come in + 45 and +32. clearly from the pics below its the +32 offset wheel, but its very possible that they fitted also spacers. but for now i have to assume they didn't, until proven others wise.

http://www.performance-car-guide.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/three-MTM-top-performers-at-Essen-Motor-Show-2.jpg
versus on Rabit222's sedan.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/19/bb6c0ea170c15bd669dfae684495fcbd.jpg
We can ignore the difference in wheel diameter , but by looking at the offsets and widths alone youd expect the sedan to poke an extra 2mm more than the hatch, but the hatchback seems to poke more with a higher offset wheel. again its possible that they are using spacers on the hatch.
ndk83
12-19-2014, 05:33 PM
And just to throw this in there, the look i want to end up with poke is something along the lines of this:
The car is on air, but this is the drive height. I think on coils with a setup like this on an 8v will be straight gangster.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8368/8587664994_7ea3e028a2_h.jpg
The 8V chassis can run alot more aggressive wheels than the 8P chassis and it seems the MK7 Golf R.
The photo above is on a 19x9+41 with 215/35/19 tires. I dont mind a bit of stretch, but for aggressive driving and peace of mind i think the lowest id like to run on a 19 is 225/35

I am told the wheel fits, but after all the suspension is done, I am not sure, but I know of a white s3 with some 19x9.5 +40 avant garde and it fit on the car, with no issues, but I have my wheels for sale as I like the look of 20 inch wheels more on the s3 then the 19,s

Did you guys have to do any fender tab mods for this to fit? Hows the inner clearance look? It looks like its possible to squeeze a 275/30 or possibly 285/30 on a 9.5 with offsets 50 in front and 44 in the rear with a bit of fender work. It'll poke out another 5mm front and rear with about 21mm less clearance on the insides.

Yeah, inner clearance is what I'd be worried about the most. Rim clearance *could* fit since its only .7 inch more on the inside in the rear and .9 inch in the front but with such wide tires (275 or 285) the sidewalls will be getting close to 3.5 inches thick and could cause issues.
Mind you, I haven't even attempted to crawl under the car yet to actually get a visual of what clearance on stock looks like.

there was a thread where a company tried 9.5 +45 and it hit the innet strut, you can put a 9.5 wheel on with a +40 offset and the widest tire you can go is 235, this will fit the car so basically 19x9.5 +40 235 35 19 will work on the S3 front and rear

No rubbing when I'm by myself. If I'm loaded up with friends it only rubs on the top of the tire/ fender liner. No issues with turning at all. When I bought it last May I didn't have an options for suspension in the States so I ordered full coils from Germany. I used http://www.ah-exclusive-parts.com for a custom strut to go lower without sacrificing comfort. I'm extremely happy with the ride quality since I drive back and forth from my home in NYC to Connecticut every week for work.

Thanks! Well, technically yes- I did have to roll the fronts just a little because I lowered it too much at first and I caught a lip coming out of my driveway. I went up half a turn on my coils and its been perfect since. My body shop guy did roll it a little with hand tools- I didn't want to go crazy with it. If the offsets were closer to 40 I would be prefect and run a lot lower. I'm testing another set of wheels (18s this time) to see if I can run lower. Not sure if I want to continue spending money on wheels or do a full exhaust......

I tried on a set of 19x9.5 TSW Interlargos +53. Since they were on my TT-RS, they had 255/35/19 Yokohama AD08 tires, which are known to be extra wide and 26.1" tall with very square shoulders. I 1st tried 5mm spacers, for +48, which barely clears the struts. Then 8mm spacers for +45 which barely clears the outer fender during compression. I believe the perfect setup would be 19x9.5 +45 with 245/35/19 tires, which will give you about 4mm on each side as a buffer. The rim is not the issue, its the tires, where it meets the rim that gets real close to the strut. However, my car is a P+ without magride. The stock struts in front have a flat spot near where the rim/tire comes closest to it, which allows for a little deeper offset. I don't know if Magride strut has the same flat spot or if its completely round. Also, I am still on stock springs, and won't have my H&R Supersports installed until Tuesday. Once It's lowered, I'll try the different rim/tire combinations again so that I can determine what works best.

Hi,
I just ordered a A3, I had a 2012 TTRS, I still have the Stock 19" wheels (offset 50?), will they fit on the A3 if i mount 235/35-19s ? I assume the 255/35s are too big.

It's funny you ask, as I actually have the stock TTRS rims/tires on my S3 right now. They are 19x9 +52. If you don''t have Magride, 255/35/19 just fits without any rubbing on stock height. With Magride, & lowered, I would say 235/35/19 just to be safe. I still have my 2013 stage 2 TTRS, but on 19x9.5 & race tires. How did you end up keeping the stocks when you got rid of the TTRS? They usually want the stocks with the car... Wish I knew how to upload pics of my cars on this forum, so you can see how they look on the 8V chassis.

I actually kept my HRE p40s, I meant 19" OEM sized. Good to know I can reuse the wheels on the A3.

Oh, LOL. BTW, Nice R8V10 & TTRS! I assume you traded in the TTRS for the R8? I thought about an R8 too, but I'm too cheap & anal to take a $160K car to the track, so I decided to just keep the TTRS & picked up the S3 instead. I have a 2013 Black TTRS partial wrapped in 3M Carbon, and APR stage 2,So yeah, between my past Audi's TT 3.2 Cab, TTS, A8, etc, I've ended up with several set of aftermarket rims too. Unfortunately, most of them are 19x9.5, which is why I was test fitting on S3 to see if I could use them on it. I think 19x9 +40 with 235/35/19 will be the perfect fitment with no clearance issues even if lowered & cambered 2+ degrees. The rear rims sits about 4mm further in though. I think you will really enjoy your new A3, even if you are used to the R8. I was very surprised at the overall feel & dynamics of the new 8V chassis. won't take too much aftermarket products to turn it into a top notch sports sedan! Enjoy!

Wheels are Avant Garde M510 19x9.5 ET40 all around.

Suspension is ST Coilovers. Rears are spun down all the way and the fronts are about 3 rotations from all the way down.

Looks Great! No rubbing with the stretched 235 tires, right? Does the edge of the rim itself poke past the fender on front & back? I tried 19x9.5 with 255/35/19 tires, different size spacers, and couldn't quite get the look right without rubbing, so went down to 19x9 with 245/35 tires.

I get some minor rubbing in the driver front on turns with bumps. Nothing that isn't bearable. I may spin the driver front up a little bit more to compensate for my fat ass. I haven't experienced rear rubbing yet, but I'm sure it will happen a little bit on the highway. It'll probably eventually clearance itself out.
Fronts poke out about 1-2 mm from the center of the wheel arch. Looks almost perfectly flush. The rears sit out a bit more. Probably about 3-4 mm total.
I was going to try to fit 245/35s on it, but I'm glad I didn't. I'm not willing to sacrifice the amount of drop in order to fit a smidge wider tire.

How's the ride like on the ST coils?
Is it bouncy? Do you scrape the front wheel flaps when making hard turns?

Thanks! I was a little iffy on the front fitment since it still tucks a good bit of the tire.

The ST coils have been awesome. I have them set about 3/4 firm, so theres a little bit of hard bounce. The cornering is nice and flat though and is a HUGE improvement over the stock suspension.
The only scrapping or rubbing that happens is the tire against the front side of the fenders. They could use a healthy rolling.

So you have the XTA ones I'm guessing. Similar to KW V2.
Wonder how the ST X model without dampening adjustment ride.

Hi guys, got delivery on my S3 Sedan in September. These S3's look amazing!! I'm getting it in brilliant black with the black optics, looking to do the black out look.
I've ordered a set of 19x8.5 Avant Garde M580's in black ET45. Planning to put 235/35's on them at stock height. Seeing that the sedans can handle a more aggressive setup, will these fit without any rubbing? The site I bought them from said she has to drill them into ET45's hopefully that doesn't cause any issues.

With 19x8.5 +45 & 235/35/19 tires, you will have absolutely no RUB on either inside nor outside, even if you lowered it alot. On my S3, I'm currently running 19x8.5 +38 with 245/35/19 Mickey Thompson tires with NO RUBBING, and I am lowered on H&R Supersport springs. I've ran up to 19x9.5 with 255/35/19 tires with no rubbing. Here is my trial & error.

Both sets are built to 19x9.5 +40
I believe the white one is running 225/35/19, (though I believe 235/35/19 should fit as well if you dont slam it as low).
White one is running 225/40/19s, they're a bit taller than I'd normally recommend, he didnt get the tires from us
Let me know if anyone is looking for a similar setup for their A3/S3!

I am pretty disappointed in the fitment options for the A3/S3. Seems you can't get any concave wheels without stretching the tires. I have stretched tires on my R32, but I am just not a fan of them any more. I really wish a 19x9.5 with at least a 245/35 would fit without rubbing.

I tried the phone book flair trick but I didn't get much out of it, gonna try an actual fender roll to get more clearance, the only thing that hits is the front fender tap that holds the liner

From someone whos running 19x9.5 et40 with 235/35/19s with ST coils spun down all the way in the rear and almost all the way down in the front, I would say that 255 is possible with just springs. My tires also do not look anywhere as stretched as those.
I have plenty of inside clearance on both front and rear struts for wider tires.
I put about -2 degrees of camber in the rear to clear up any possible rubbing that may come.
The fronts fenders have been rolled to fix the rubbing while fast cornering. The front edge of the front fenders have a pretty large inside lip that was cutting a bit into my tire. I made it worse by accidentally pulling the lip out more when leaving a steep driveway at SOWO.
I have some measurements of fender to ground, wheel gap and side skirts to ground for both OEM A3 suspension with OEM wheels and my ST Coils with OEM wheels that I could share if it'd help anyone. Basically I received about 3.25 inches of drop in the front and ~2.5 in the rear.

Got any shots that show the amount of poke the wheels have? A local kid is selling a set of AG wheels in 19x9.5. I am hoping to be able to test fit them.

Good info though.

I can generally agree with that. Without doing a more aggressive fender roll and with that size and offset and the amount of drop, I don't think anything else wider would fit in the front.
I'm sure I could get a 245/35/19 or possibly 255/30/19 under there if the front fenders were almost pinched closed or cut. The fender line makes it a bit difficult to do any type of pulling for clearance.

No rub as long as 235/40/18 or 225/40/18 or 225/45/18 tires. 245 on +35 might rub on the outside if not enough camber.

So far, on 8.5" rim with 235 tires, the lowest confirmed offset without rubbing is at +32 front, +30 rear. So 5mm should put you at the edge without rubbing. But now, you'll need to make sure your toe in the rear is within spec, so it doesn't rub toward the rear of the tire. If you want to be safe, just use 3mm spacers. There are plenty 3mm 57.1 hubcentric 5x112 spacers on ebay for like $19 per pair. I have some blue ones that I use to change the front/rear width at the track. Put it on the front for more steering, rear for less steering. And if you use 3mm spacers, you won't necessarily need to get longer bolts either.

I agree. I think that 19x9.5 et40 is a sweet spot for this platform. It allows a large number on tire sizes and ride heights while being pretty flush at all of them.

20x10 is toofar out of range for the A3/S3. The Max you can go on the outside is 9.5 +40, 235 tires stretched. The Max you can go on the inside is 9.5 +45 with 235 tires stretched. with a 20x10, you are 6.35mm wider in both directions, so you are out of the 5mm buffer zone where it clears both inside & outside. If you insist on a 10" wide rim with +55 offset, you will need a 16mm spacer to clear the inside, and will be about 20mm poke on the outside. Even rolling the fender won't help you at that point.

Thanks for the measurements. Looks like this car went with a 10" rear setup (although they are 19's and +36). I wonder if any fender work was done and if the front has as much space as the back.

That car I believe is from Vossen Japan, and from what I understand, they had to do major fender pull, even to fit skinny stretched tires in the back. Just look at how much the edge of the rear fender was pulled(angled) out versus the front...

You're numbers are based on front fitment right?
The +45 for the 9.5 wide would be cutting it really close to strut in the front but completely depends on suspension, amount of drop and diameter of the wheel. I would think 18x9.5s et45 would be relatively safe with a decent drop. But my 19x9.5 et40 would probably rub on the strut collars if it was in any further.
I imagine 20x10 et34/35 would be all you could really fit with the needed amount of drop to make it look decent. Thats doesn't take into account the fact that it would stick out almost 13mm more than 19x9.5 et40s. No amount of rolling would be able to make it work. At that point you are looking at pulling the fenders or running very heavy camber with a pretty hard fender roll.
I can't really talk about rear fitment though. I never really got under the rear to check strut spacing since I never intended to run a staggered setup. Normally though the rears offer better space for wider wheels and can be taken to the extreme since you're not having to deal with the wheels turning.

Actually, all my measurements were done on stock non magride struts/shocks, with H&R Supersport springs. For the front, due to the angle of the strut, you can go a little higher offset with larger diameter rims. The most I could get without rubbing was 19x9.5 +45 in the front. 20x9.5 might allow upto +47 maybe. For the rear, surprisingly, you CAN NOT go any further in than the front, due to a plastic dust cover thingy over the rear shock. So, the inside clearance is about the same as front, but you can go a little further out than the front without rubbing, but not enough to go 10" wide rims. I went out as far as 19x9.5 +40, and it just barely rubs on full compression. Hence my min/max at 9.5" +40 to +45 squared for our cars. Of course the width of the tires will have a HUGE factor in rubbing vs not rubbing too!

I do have a problem though. I have 3mm spacers in the front and 8mm spacers in the rear and I am getting vibrations when getting to 55+mph. The spacers from both from ecs and I know they don't have that hub centric piece that sticks out cause it should fit the hub already. When I was having them installed the tech did ask if I had a hub centric ring cause he told me they weren't hub centric. The wheels are balanced and the lugs and not loose. So question is which hub centric ring can I use? I have 10mm(front) and 15mm(rear) spacers from my oem wheel setup, could I use those without having rubbing issues? Or what other solutions are there?
Thank you much in advance.

You could narrow it down to the front or rear by taking just the front spacers off. If you take the fronts off, and it still vibrates, leave the fronts off, and take off the rears, if it still vibrates, its probably your wheels. If it doesn't still vibrate, then re-install the spacers, sanding off any rust on the hubs, cleaning the wheels, use some anti-seize, and torque the bolts a little at a time in a star pattern. If it still vibrates, its probably the spacers.
It needed up just being the rear 8mm spacers there wasn't enough hub left for the wheel to catch on. I put in my 10mm hubcentric spacers and no more vibrations.

Hi guys,
Been a while since Ive been on the forum. Thanks to OP for starting up this thread...I feel quite chuffed that my S3 was used for comparison sake :)
I have since changed my wheels from 20 x 8.5 ET40 BBS CH-R (with 10mm spacers) to a set of BBS CI-R 20 x 8.5 ET32. I'm really after a concave set up and am wondering if I can get away with a 20 x 9.5 ET40 set up and hopefully concave...

Thanks for the measurements. Looks like this car went with a 10" rear setup (although they are 19's and +36). I wonder if any fender work was done and if the front has as much space as the back.
http://cdn.mkimg.carview.co.jp/minkara/photo/000/004/058/135/4058135/p1.jpg
That car I believe is from Vossen Japan, and from what I understand, they had to do major fender pull, even to fit skinny stretched tires in the back. Just look at how much the edge of the rear fender was pulled(angled) out versus the front...
This is correct. I actually got the chance to see this in person last year in Japan (we had a Vossen Owner's Meet during a Typhoon, wasn't the best day lol) and it was perfect. So clean, the dual concave 19x10s looked insane on it.

Hi dude
Will this set up work:
20 x 9.5 ET47 front
20 x 9.5 ET40 rear
Or can I just go with ET40 front and rear?

Hey Rabbit222, 20x9.5 +40 will work front & rear without rubbing on the inside. It should also work without rubbing on the outside as long as you stretch 225 or 235/30/20 tires, but I think it'll poke just a little on the front. I ran 255/35/19 on 19x9.5 rims, which is much taller than your 235/30/20(26.1" vs 25.6"), so I think you are safe. But If you want to play it safe, I would get between +42 and +45 all the way around and use spacers to bring it out until it rubs and then back off 1mm. [wrench]
Cheers.

You car looks great!
Thanks for your order [:D]
Sorry to hear that you're having issues... but to follow up: did it turn out to be the spacers or the wheels that you are experiencing trouble with?

I've been trying to figure out a good tire solution for my not-purchased-yet, 20x9 inches rims. From those I've seen online, alot are running 235/30/20 with a +35 or +38. I was going to try 235/35/20, but do u think a 245/35/20 +35 would work so I have less stretch and better/more sidewall?
GetYourWheels
09-24-2015, 11:09 AM
Dont run the 35 profile, unless you want to rub everywhere!
You'll want to run at most the 235/30/20, and possibly even a 225/30/20 if available at a +35 offset.
If you want more sidewall then go with the 19"s, with 20"s you'll have to run the 30 profile sidewall (esp if you're lowered)

[wrench]

I took this picture of Ringnuts S3 at a show in Huntington Beach a few months back. I know he's on H&R Deep Coilovers and the wheels are RS6 20x9 ET35. The tires are 245/30s.
Perfect.
