Hello Everyone

I have been having problems with a loud air noise coming from the engine bay. Now I thought I found the problem with a cracked airline going to the N75 valve. But when I replaced it there was no succes so when I was playing with the lines I put them on backwards just to see what would happen and obviously I had no boost but what I did realize is that I also had no loud noise. So I checked the actuator out by running the air compressor to it and watched the valve move but what I'm thinking is that the valve is not functioning at full potental because I do get some boost but it gives out when it gets higher then 5psi.

So what I was wondering is how often does a actuator go? and can I get one at a local parts store like Part Source or do I have to go to a dealer?

Thanks,
Rob

I have a Forge Motorsport one I am trying to get rid of. Fully rebuildable. Check the link.

But to answer your question, WG actuators are indeed wear and tear items just like the turbo itself. I actually have another WG I have here, that a shop said it has some life left in it. So, they can function, but just not up to par as a more newer unit.

You need to apply vacuum to the actuator to get it to work. Hooking up a air line to it and pushing compressed air to it wouldn't do much. Are you saying you can't make more than 5 psi while driving?

^OP tested it correct. He said he applied pressure to it via air compressor. You don't place vacuum on it to test it.

When the boost controller permits boost pressure from the boost pressure source on the compressor housing to go to the actuator port, it extends the arm when pressure is added past what the spring is set at. Thus, opening the waste-gate. Come on Jason, you are better than this [cool]. What he should do it keep it at a steady pressure (not quite sure what stock spring is...maybe 7psi???) to see how the actuator arm reacts. If the actuator arm gives out while applying a steady 5psi, there is an issue with the actuator. That would be my diagnosis, anyways.

You're right I clearly wasn't thinking this one through. Adding pressure to test not vacuum. But yes he should apply pressure while closely watching the a gauge to see when the gate opens. Wastegate pressure is between 3-5 psi I believe.

We have the OEM actuator available but unfortunately its on back order.

Below is the part number.

The dealer ship told me that they don't sell the waste gate by itself and Seerlah I would take that forge from you but the shipping will end up costing me around $50 because I'm in Ontario. Do you guys know if these things make noise if they break?

Jason- my gauge shoes that when I punch the throttle I can go to 15psi (i know this is not true) but the noise starts on the gauge around 5psi so i'm assuming its very low boost. The car still has pull but not as much as it use to have.

UPS would cost maybe $20. PM me if you want to get an actual shipping quote (I'll do $90+ actual shipping for you).

But as far as I know, there are no noises. Only noise would be the actual waste-gate flapper banging on the housing from the exhaust pulses. But there are signs, such as loosing boost.

if there is no noise made from the actuator failing then I guess its not that then. hummm the noise is very loud but it does not sound like a blown turbo. considering its only about 7 months old. I'm so lost on this problem hence the reason i'm looking to get rid of it in the next 2 months.

Loud humm noise makes me think it's your AC compressor. How much boost are you getting, and what is your tuning mapped for to boost? Have a boost gauge?

Easy way to test the WG. Take the line off it going to the n75 and go for a spin (you must have a boost gauge to do this). Watch to see what you boost. If you overboost, let off the throttle. But at this point, we will be able to rule out your WG being your issue. If your WG was bad, you would not be able to boost much because the flapper would just dump all the exhaust and your turbine would not spin much.

Well I know its not a humm noise and I just replaced the AC. Here is a link to a 5 second vid of the noise

its not a very good video but you can hear the noise

I just got back in from disconnecting the hose that goes to the N75 and the noise is still there

if you have any ideas let me know

so what happened when you disconnected the line ( btw you can just clamp the line)
if you boost strong its your N75, if not its your WG or a turbo problem. (curtosey of old guy)

you also could be in soft limp mode where the ECU limits you to ~5psi. i had that forever and it sucked all kindsa ass.
im having sort of the same issue to this day, im not boosting well in 1st and 2nd but tearing up to 12 psi in 3rd. im thinking wastegate is the problem.

Found the problem this weekend. It is a vaccum line valve that connects to the mainfold it sits at the back of the engine bay. just happen to touch it and it finally broke apart. not bad tho it will cost me $65. Part # 058 133 753B
