Diego at AMS found me a suitable 03' A6 six speed donor car at a great price. The car will be in mid week, and we can start working on the build. My plan so far is go with the Tial 605's, fueling, light weight fly wheel, IC's, possibly 2.8 heads, and IE Rods (depending on how far I want to push it). I've owned my A6 for over 4 years now and I'm ready to take it to the next level, that TIP trans has been on my list of "to do" swaps for some time now. I'm planning on getting everything done by spring time since I am in no hurry. Pics to come!

Heck of a build! Good luck man... those 2.8 heads/cams can get spendy to build (roughly $3k) and may not really be worth it in for the overall gains in performance. I don't think i'd do if I were to do my build over again. Just my $0.02!

Thanx for the info, I was considering it since quite a few people have gone that route but I will reconsider. I'm not looking at going super crazy with this build since I'll be keeping the A6 as a DD but it would be great to pump out a nice 450hp on a daily basis.

As stated, if you are not looking to go crazy with the build, stick with the 2.7t heads, there is no disputing that with the more aggressive cams and bigger ports, you can make more top end power, but if you a sticking to a 605s turbo, you are not really going to be able to justify it.

To tell you the truth I think the 6 speed swap is gonna be huge for me after driving a TIP for the last four years. I just have to make sure I choose the right clutch that can hold the power but not wear me out driving every day.

Is it not cheaper to buy a manual car and put the tials on it?

Considering what the car cost me 4 years ago, plus tax and interest it would probably cost me more to trade it for another car that I have no clue what has been through. I'm also getting a great deal for Te donor car and labor to do the six speed swap.

would be good to hear what your guy is doing in detail on the trans swap

what is the approximate cost?

Mantis
05-21-2011, 07:18 AM
My guess would be
-shifter
-clutch pedal assy associated switches(2 of them)
-wire reverse lights on motor side of harness
-wire clutch switches on cabin side of harness
-remove TIP trans, replace with 6mt/clutch
-install master and slave cylinders, bleed clutch line
-put it all back together
-replace propshaft with 6 mt unit
-replace diff with 6mt 4.11 diff
-replace cv axles with 6 mt axles
/done

Mine cost 4k with an upgraded clutch, and many small mistakes on my part

That makes sense, cross border shipping totaled over 1k, and I ended up with an S4 diff first go round, and I tossed in a stage 3 clutch, purchased new CV axles, and changed tuning from GIAC to VAST

Did the labor myself thak god, or it would have been 5.5k

Sounds like you got the swap done at a really good rate, as stated earlier, if your guy has his crap together, it probably takes about 9hrs total

Honestly I was a little skeptical at first with his pricing, but I did my research and decided to take a shot with him. You don't even want to know what kind of quotes I was getting from other shops. I was originally going to do it at Redline speed works but they are too far.

the c5... what a perfect car! I need another one :(

Well the Tial 605's are able to put out more power and they are a bit cheaper at the moment compared to the K04's. Honestly I can go out and buy another car if I wanted to right now, but there is something about the C5's styling and tuning capabilities that I love. Now that it's a six speed too, I doubt I'll ever get rid of it.

Yeah I'll most likely stay with the biturbo setup but I won't rule out a single turbo setup. The guy who did my swap is going to do a single turbo in his AR so I want to see how that goes.

I sure came close to pulling trigger, but pulled back and settled for 2+ status with replacement of K03s. In the end decided that the extra $ for fueling, intercoolers, on top of K04/manifold, etc. was too high for me in aftermath of Great Recession era. (Got some K03s for next to nothing)

So it's in shop getting cleaned up - seals all around, brakes, rubber.

It all started out as a simple 605 build with only a few upgrades, but the mod bug has bitten me hard. I most likely will be going with the 770's now. Did you sell you block to Mike (Gearhead)? If yes, then it could be your block. He also recommended me to your machine shop, center auto. Once I get the pistons, I'll take a ride to ct and do the necessary machine work in order to put the short block back together.

Just got my pistons in 81.5 diameter and 9.0:1 compression, wrist pins, and rings thanks to wdbdy2000s4, also waiting for my 2.8 heads that he sent out separately. I should be ready for the machine shop as soon as I get a few more odds and ends together.

Awesome dude!

What did you decide to do for the 2.8L heads (valvetrain)? Any specific goals you have?

I was looking at your supertech kit, originally when I was going with the 605's the valve train was going to stay stock. I guess that idea is out the window. My goal is making the top end bullet proof at high rev's.

I already responded to your other thread, and sent you a price, but I'm thinking about offering even a bit more!

And yeah, with 770s and your build, you are going to need a full valvetrain. I wouldn't go solid lifters, but everything else.

Waiting for the heads to come in, then I gotta order full valve train. Brian at Center Auto gave me a list of exactly what I need to machine/balance everything. Hopefully I'll have the parts ready within a few weeks so I can head up to ct. and get my machine work done. I'm still stuck on hardware, since I bought the short block from you I need to sit down in front of ETK and piece together all the nuts and bolt for assembly.

I actually have this build on hold while I finish my stg 3 build. I will be looking to buy a high mileage S4 to transplant with all of these parts, and a set of 770's (or Single Turbo setup if 034 puts it into production soon).

My car as it sits now:
