Hey there. I am looking at moving to Germany (Munich) within the next year but have some questions regarding emissions. Now I do plan on buying a car in German so importing is no problem. I have narrowed down my choices to a Mk2 Golf Syncro or a 8L S3. I love hatch backs and want to stay in the VAG family but need AWD (read avid snowboarder that likes to have fun in the snow with his car). The problem is that the Golf is classified as an emissions 1 where as the S3 is an emissions 3. Downtown Munich is a emissions 2 zone. So the S3 would work legally but not the Mk2. I read that it is possible to get a badge by "upgrading" a catalytic converter but that was all it said.
Would it be possible to up the rating of the Golf from 1 to at least 2? Even with say a swap to a newer motor?
Any information would be great whether it be in German or English.
