Folks,
One of the Nav+ guru's from our special Yahoo forum has launched a site dedicated to the Nav+ (CD-based...like mine) and the RNS-E (DVD/MMI based). Most of the folks from the Yahoo Nav+ forum are starting to post their threads here (which will make it easier for folks who just want to troll through and get educated). So, if a nOOB asks for information about the RNS-E...we can just direct them to this site for further reading.

FYI (as of March 2005), nobody has been able to load up a US map DVD in the European RNS-E to get it to work. There is a consortium of folks who are trying to modify these map DVD's to trick the european hardware....so stay tuned. The other solution is to just buy an RNS-E from a US model (i.e. a 2005 allroad)...but that will probably cost you $3K+.

FYI (2) - The RNS-E has been installed in a few 2002-2004 A6's...and is functional (see site for posts)...but I have yet to hear of one installed in a 1999-2001 A6 (because of the lack of the CAN-bus architecture).

Enjoy!

yup. Link to "retrofit" basics:

If it were me, I'd still rather spend the extra $$ for the US version to get OEM XM/Sirius, bluetooth etc.

FYI - some folks have gotten the Euro version of the RNS-E working with a modified US map DVD.

I realize this is a VERY old thread, but it seems like a good place to start.

Has anyone successfully installed an RNS-E system AND a steering wheel with controls in a C5 A6/S6/RS6?

I finally got my RNS-E system installed in my '03 RS6 and it's talking to the Sirius Sat system, my blue tooth setup and the nav system works too. Now, because my R8's spoiled me with on the wheel controls, I'm wanting to change out the stock wheel in my RS6 to one that will allow me the freedom to control via the wheel.

Anyone have a clue on what to do and where to look?

The RNS-E is cake. The steering wheel will be tricky. The problem is that you need one that still has paddles for the RS6's tranny and also has the buttons for the infotainment system. I don't recall the 2003-2004 A6 cars having both features. I think that you only get the infotainment buttons and there's simply no paddles or buttons for the tranny. I know that you'll have to ditch your nice 3-spoke wheel for a 4-spoke though.

Another important task is making sure to recode the control modules to work properly.
