View Full Version : What does $2300 buy? My A6 Avant Rescue

Took some virgin pictures of the beater I bought, the list of items broken is almost too long to list, but I hope to fix almost all of it, some things like the dash probally won't make it for a long time. Ebay parts will be used frequently, but it'll be working, and running instead of being crushed. I believe the only good items I saw were all the Bose speakers and windows worked, and that the CA's and TRE's had been replaced recently, timing belt wasen't cracked either.
It was either this, or an 99.5 A4 that wouldn't start and had transmission problems. This thing ran (albeit with an empty coolant res and milky oil cap) and had 28K less miles, 155,600 to be exact.
Sale/taxable price was acutally $1746

Thanks.
If the seats clean up It'll be a winner, there are virtually no wear spots anywhere except for the wrinkling which is a bit normal from what I've seen of other comfort seats.

I'm not amazed by what people are capable of doing (or not doing) to cars anymore.
She (I think it was a she because there are court documents for some sort of traffic court in NC with a chick name on it) at least had the decency to get a $25 oil change 5K miles ago lol.

my ar comfort seats are in great shape and have wrinkles too... no worries there.
if its a reliable runner then i think you got a pretty decent deal... especially if you diy it back to good health.
as long as you get it mechanically sound, the cosmetic stuff can wait.... enjoy parking up front at stores while you can... haha.

thanks! I'm strangely attracted to the blue/white interior too. I already spluged on $2 OEM rear floor mats from ECS a new coolant res and cap :P

lol oh yes I will enjoy that. It'll be all a DIY, nothing scares me anymore after owning a B5 S4 for 2 years. Powertrain will come out so I can at least reseal the engine and clean up all the oil that's accumulated over the years if the coolant loss isn't something like a HG. Really though it'll be a good investment so long as the block or heads are not cracked, even if it does need HG's. I have ~ 1000-1500 to spend to 'get it running well'.

sweet, I had hoped they were like that, I had feared it had clogged sunroof drains at one point from the slightly moldy-smell the car had.
I want an avant :|
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this. Keep us updated.

It's threads like this that make me want to buy an older Audi in need of TLC as a fun project.

start my new job tomorrow, but I'm hoping my friend will be able to meet me at the place to pick it up so it doesn't sit there until saturday. will get the big list of shit that's broke up soon, and this weekend will be initial engine/trans inspection and cleaning. thanks for the kind words from all, I'm excited to put some tlc in her for once in it's life.

Drove it home today.
Good news;
It costs $62 to title, that's *after* taxes :P
it's a clean title!
Will have 3 days to TLC it this weekend+monday b/c of Mr king day.
It holds coolant, still had >1/2 the res left when I got home, appears to be leaking from the res and somewhere on the back of the engine
Suspension isn't a *complete* dead horse
Engine seems to be running decently, even managed 22.2mpg according to what I could see on the trip, wants to die when I stop, probally need to clean egr or something.
Trans shifts smoothly
couldn't *really* tell b/c the coolant temp sensor is broken, but assuming the oil temp sensor is fine, it didn't overheat.
brakes work, not well, but they work.
front heated seats work, not sure if they're working correctly or if I'm used to my brand new G8's heated seats, but they get..warmish, only drove 10miles or so.
floor pans are not crushed from some idiot's diy jacking
bad news;
more shit is broken/missing than I had first thought,
the speedometer dances,
for some reason the cabin filter shroud is missing,
so is the battery holder, (and by extension the windshield wiper drainage is broken)
The Altenator looks to be dying, several times the lights dimmed, although, this could be an EGR related issue to it wanting to die when stopping.
I think the alarm is on the fritz, the lights 'pulse' when the car is on unless they're turned off, and it' makes a weird beeping sound when shut off. Know there were 10+ interior/alarm codes I'll have to take a look at
the windage tray-missing
I haven't looked at it yet, but the rear wiper motor may be broken too, had the front wipers on lowest setting, didn't see the rear move (unless it's a seperate switch, maybe someone can enlighten me when it's supposed to come on?)
now that my cold is gone, the car is a little 'old' smelling.
has exhaust leak somewhere, worst case it's a bad cat by the sound of it.
first things to get fixed;
a damn battery!
hood/trunk gas struts, that rear opening is HEAVY!
side view mirror switch
turn signal bulbs, possible the reflectors, since it looked like they were poped out, probally due to some idiot's attempt with a screw driver.

The rear wiper will come on when you push the stalk forward toward the dash. Or atleast that's how to turn it on, in my allroad.

So today was full of surprises. Initally I thought I could get away with just a vac and scrub, I'm glad I didn't stop there.
I decided to do a full carpet shampoo/clean via removing all seats.
Say hello to my little friend;
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6091/1001889r.th.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/1001889r.jpg/)
A likely source of the 'odor' that was in the car; who knows what caked under the seat.

http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/9897/1001894.th.jpg (http://img651.imageshack.us/i/1001894.jpg/)
After all day of scrubbing, vaccuming and repeating; this is recent after I emptied a bottle of automotive oxy spray on it.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1612/1001901v.th.jpg (http://img146.imageshack.us/i/1001901v.jpg/)
passenger side, I still want to steam clean it to get anything that's left, the major source of stain are gone, but there's not much to hide the fact that the carpet is still dirty as shit.
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/3265/1001902.th.jpg (http://img683.imageshack.us/i/1001902.jpg/)
two guesses what this little POS box that ruined the rest of the day is? NO GOOGLING
hints; it's not aftermarket remote start or alarm.
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5370/1001903f.th.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/i/1001903f.jpg/)
Driver seat, the plastics cleaned up very well, but the leather is just toast, the Lexol didn't even touch the black stuff encrusted in the cracks on the leather
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/5764/1001904u.th.jpg (http://img691.imageshack.us/i/1001904u.jpg/)
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/5353/1001905.th.jpg (http://img821.imageshack.us/i/1001905.jpg/)
Other stuff accomplished;
new hood gas strut, new rear wiper blade, bought some dot4 and will buy new mirror switch and gas struts for the trunk tonight. the seats are now clean enough I won't feel the need to shower after sitting in them and at least for now, the interior smells like carpet cleaner instead of ass.
removed the cup holders from rear seat(both were broken *yay*)

OMG a ming avant with the blue/cream.. thats hot!
You could send your cluster out to modulemaster.com. They rebuilt mine, fixed the non-existant pixels, and the notchy speedometer. It was ~180 with shipping and everything.
Not sure what you mean by the cabin air filter shroud, but it doesnt have anything that covers it. If you take the big cover off, its just there hanging out.
I would bet the leak is a flex pipe. Damn things always leak.

I'm tempted to try anything at this point, any links to references on this product? It seems legit, espically if it's good enough for bently's, just never heard of it before.
stuff I did today;
so, the 'gunk' on the wheels turned out to be cv axles. Thankfully the rears are still good, but this was yet another setback, and I also noticed the 'replaced' control arms are acutally the all-broken orginals. Oddly the ball-joints are okay, but the bushings are torn.

Duralast reman cv axles are a little known secret, for $59.99 each, you get a rebuilt oe axle with new boots, re-painted half-shafts, and a lifetime warranty that's acutally usefull. Picked these up at a local store

Not.. probally the cleanest parts on the car right now except the new ones. my OCD got to me, had to clean the CV heat shields. The subframe and all the other parts in the wheel well were covered in CV grease, but I'll get to them with the powertrain removed.

this my friends, ruined the day yesterday and sucked an hour away today. Since there were no guesses, this little box is a device to immobilize the vehicle. It's used by lein and rentor agencies. ie. You don't pay your weekly car payment? This prevents the car from starting. Luckily it's simply tied into the ignition positive cable. So it was a very easy, if not aggervating fix. It appears whatever was making the noise on shut-down was this as well..

tomorrow I'll attempt to finish cleaning the interior and clean up the oil from the engine to start to diagnose where the various leaks are comming from.

A motor swap may be in it's future, but only after I get some debt down and fix the major stuff. Even then, it would likely be a 4.2, I'm not sure I could comitt to another 2.7TT as a daily.

At this point in the day, I had taken one of the seats up to the upholestery shop to get a quote
$660 for both front seats. needless to say, this was out of the question, there's absolutely no reason to put $1K into leather for a car that's going to be worth $4-5K at the most. However, I still had the thermo-nuclear option of cleaning power;
the 'special' sauce selected for the job was a mild solvent, The OE leather wasen't torn and is simply dirty, so I pondered.. I'll let the results speak for themselves. The solvent and scrubbing power acutally softended up the leather as well. I finsihed with some conditioner.

I think you should seriously consider picking up one of my spare 2.7's to put into this.

didn't do much today, replaced a bunch of vac hose, the FPR hose was loose to say the least,
ordered new coolant temp sensor, waiting on a reply from a member for a hall sensor and ordered new crank case hose.
Scanned the car. Note the car was turned on a few times when the seats were out, when the breather hose was pluged to prevent water getting in(and washed while running)) and the battery has been disconnected, so some of these will go away when I clear and try to get fresh codes. The interior ones however, have been there for a while. The miss-fires, were not there before, so once I get anew breather and clear to re-scan we'll see if they come back. Anyone have a gues son the interior codes? I wouldn't be surprised if all of them were acutally real faults, but can one or two things account for them? thanks.
took some better pictures of the interior.

Alot of those interior codes are from when the alarm goes off. I always have codes for the alarm over the summer, windows down means the stupid alarm goes off lol.
And since most of those codes are intermittant, I would clear them, and drive the car for a bit. Lock and unlock the doors a few times, then re scan it. See what, if anything comes back. Thats all the dealer would do.
On the engine, these had 35k plugs. I'd throw on a set of plugs, and a set of wires to be safe. I did that a while ago on mine, ran alot better.

I did notice, that the rear gate will not lock, and I've set off the alarm once or twice already, and some of those light codes are correct too.

just sitting here waiting for it to get warmer to start the powertrain removal, so here's what I did in the last few days after work
1st, can someone give me detailed instructions on the seat Memory useage? I believe it's broken, but I want to make sure It's not just me. Note; the side view mirror adjuster is broken, so there is no adjustment between memory saves.
Pres STOP so that it's pushed down
Press M and a number together for at least 1 second.
it should now be saved.
I then move the seat forward a few inches, and repeate.
When I press 1 again, nothing happens?
onto the pics! NOTE, if anyone has another suggestion for image hosting, I'll gladly take it into consideration. Imageshack has gone down the crapper in terms of spam recently.

Got some good codes last night;
needs upstream 02 sensors, and a Cam pos sensor, misfires were due to a spark plug wire not seated fully. Buying cheap parts isn't helping much, the $50 breather hose cracked on me the first time I compressed the push-to-remove clips that go into the valve covers. [evilmad] hopefully ECS will let me return the shitty hose for a better one that won't break after 1 use. Power steering pump is pretty loud too..
Car wants to die if I give it gas and it comes back down to idle. found a 'list' of stuff from the PO;
Cat
Maf (I cleaned this up, with no difference, but that would explain why it wants to die)
02
speed sensor (bought this already)
fixed the coolant temp sensor at least :/
other stuff discovered;
the dual zone flap is blocked or non-functional, but the a/c and heat work, without any leaks.
the a/c fan (and by extension the fan controller) are probally toast, the eletric fan would not turn on with the a/c :(

lol, that's because the G8 is supposed to be the garage queen and right now it's on 50mile daily commute duty. The faster this is on the road the better

forgot about that;
oh yeah, forgot to mention on the broken list;
every single fucking interior piece has broken. every one. This is a clear example of why I hate audi interiors, the plastic gets brittle and their 'simple' push to install style breaks parts every time. I'm not sure if I can glue most of them together, so the A6 may loose some 'weight'. Espically the A pillar pieces, The fabric gets 'glued' to the windshield sealer, before I realized what was going on, it's already in 4-6 different pieces. Using plastic interior pry bars on the clips that connect them does not help, the clips are just too strong and plastic too brittle.

Yeah, Audi techs usually order new a pillar pieces, and all new fasteners when taking an interior apart. Its such a pain, but its part of why Audi's interiors are so much better fit and finish wise. Double edge sword :/

Did some stuff today :P
all of which were

yes, that black stuff is transmission oil. :( It'll get 5-6 new quarts and a new filter, but eventually It will have to be rebuilt. I can't believe it's even shifting at this point. No that's not G12, It's Dexcool.
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/1007/1001957c.jpg
a small oil leak maybe?
http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/351/1001958h.jpg
inital front clip removal for powertrain removal got done today, wanted to do more, like disconnect axles and driveshaft, but the G8(in the back in this picture) needed a wash first.
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/9619/1001961x.jpg
clearly.. the belt was on it's last leg
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4428/1001962q.jpg
we're going to try to re-upholster (and tint) the vehicle ourselves, total cost of materials for both so far is <$100, so if we can manage to not screw it up, it will be some money saved that we can put twoard the engine. Orange glue removal is a dirty job

The headliner with the orange glue foam removed..
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5109/1001964m.jpg
The $56 headliner chosen, it's not a perfect match, but it was bought locally and since all interior trim will be done, it'll look good enough

Haven't updated in a while, mostly because work gets most of my time anymore.
Got the engine mostly disconnected from the harness and various hoses, ect, so that it's ready to yank this weekend.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9571/1001966yd.jpg
the $39 for 50' of 5% came out very nice, and I'll have enough for a fleet of vehicles.
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/7979/1001967n.jpg
Pimping ain't easy, infact, it takes up a lot of space. The Dashboard may soon follow every interior panel to replace the Heater core and fix whichever motor isn't working while the car is down anyway. It (the dash) is also bubbling up on the sides and on the windshield vent, which is something I wanted to take care of as well.

Saddly, the powertrain didn't get pulled today, *everything* is ready to go sans the Shifter cable for tomorrow however, and it seemed like every action took 3 times longer than it should. So this update will be sorta boring :/
The good news is that the Headliner came out pretty good. There are a few spots I'm not happy about, and for some reason now the sun-roof doesn't want to close without help, but overall for a 1st DIY I'm happy.
First off;
The downpipes, the A6 has me spoiled, these were practically a breeze compared to my S4, unfortunatly, the left side is completly gutted as far as a cat goes,I don't understand how it's happended, but from what I could see there's absolutely nothing there.
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1985.jpg
weren't these just in the box? That CC too.. wow what a PITA
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1986.jpg
This bitch was the worst point in the day, removing the TB cable from a rear TB'd vehicle, and the heater core rubber hoses were not compliant either. I also had the cover on the TB peel off, so idk if I'm going to do something about that now or get a new TB cable.
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1987.jpg
hmm... might be an oil leak @ the Rear driveshaft
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1988.jpg
between the black trans oil and this.. it looks like a trans rebuild is enevitable. Luckily I just got a promotion @ my job.. so I may go so far as a master rebuild kit or a totaly new trans
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1990.jpg
oh yayy!! As if enough shit wasen't broken.. It's hard to see, but the Aero boot on the driveshaft is completly missing
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1993.jpg
Neeeeuuu headliner is up! It's a good match.
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1996.jpg
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1995.jpg
Things discovered today;
The rear door lock mechanism was simply broken(and the broken piece still in the interior panel!!), some epoxy and 5minuites later it locks!! Fingers crossed, but this may solve many interrior codes.
So far the HG's don't appear to be blown, there's a lot of condensation in the exhuasts, but that could be from the non-existiant cat.
The rear-end and axles are in good shape, the diff axle seals are sweating a bit, but nothing drastic.
Still can't identify why the coolant was empty when I got the car, It obvisully pressurizes, and I haven't noticed any leaks. The white residue on the downpipe is curious, but it probally from a broken res spilling it on the DP. The only thing that's been broken so far has been the Pressure cap and Threads, which I can easily see why it would spill over.
The lower oil pan is toast, some idiot put a jack under it and cracked it. It looks like a DIY epoxy or paint job is what's keeping it from leaking worse than it is.
The 'burning' oil smell looks like very leaky Cam caps.
Front Motor mounts are leaky, but I was planning on replacing them and the snub with revised versions from audi.

Decided to cherry pick the power train instead of a subframe removal. Aside from having to use a jack to carry the trans over the subframe, it went smoothly.

After

AHA in all it's dirty-ness
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_1998.jpg
Not sure what my attack plan is yet, I'd like to rebuild it, but I'm unsure if I can handle a complete rebuild as a DIY job without it taking a month, which would mean a new $2000 trans. Least I would do is reseal and do a oil/filter change I suppose. In any case, explaing to my partner we should get a $800 ZF master rebuild kit and some other updated parts that are a couple 100 $$$ 'just because it would be doing it the right way' will be an uphill battle to say the least.

All the mounts where broken, every single one. This is not an area I will be skipping on, thinking on some Meyle's, but ECS does not list Trans mounts for sale for the C5, so I'll have to find them somewhere else.

Thanx for the update, lookin good so far.
All I'll say about today is I'm very glad I didn't get a 2.8L B5 TIP(or even the 1.8T TIP I was looking @ before), it was tight enough in the C5 disconnecting stuff and removing the powertrain.
Stuff I bought from Ebay Hong-Kong today;
Dashboard Pop-out cup holder- $31
C5 fog light grille's- $24
I hate buying China shit, as they'll screw you if you have any problems (both were acutally $1, the remaining being 'shipping chargers') but I'm hoping these are simple enough that I won't have a problem.

removed the harness (it's nice to see a non-heat soaked harness for a change..) and I/M to get a view of the intake valves.
Not sure what's going on here, I know the Crank case vent spider hose was damaged, but this is some nasty oil build up. I'm vaugely aware that there's some sort of Valve that needs to be replaced fairly often on 2.8L Tips? (suction pump) could this be a result of that?
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_2020.jpg
In any case, there's a *ton* of hard caked oil.

The aluminum block vent (in the second picture below) is similar to this.

No, that's not coolant, it's acutally melted plastic from a stubby screw-driver someone 'missplaced' under the I/M

Valves are decent, they're not great, but no sign of Blown HG so far. They're just filthy from 155,000 miles of mostly corner-mart 87 octane. lots of seafoam is in it's future.

not so shabby for 155,000 miles. However, the piston heads are rather oily. Depending on cost, I may just get the Heads rebuilt.

How difficult in your opinion is changing out the engine mounts? I was quoted 10 hours by an indy shop for my 3.0 Avant!!! Tranny I know it's simple, jack up the tranny, remove and replace mounts.

The Trans mounts should be 2 hour tops R/R job, the MM however, I would say at least 3-4, I'm unsure if there's enough room on the C5 platform to do a swap without removal of the front clip. I'm also unfamiliar with the term Indy, however I could see the extra 4 hours happening if this is a broad vehicle make shop and someone that doesn't specilize in VW/Audi's specifically. A front clip removal is fairly involved, even for a specalist. There's coolant loss, lots of wires to make sure you don't break, and a front bumper to re-align. Ie, it might not acutally take them 10hours, but that's what they'll charge for the extra effort. IMO it sounds like a lot, but you're also asking a DIY, so any shop time is too much.

Understood, indy aka independent shop is an Audi/VW specialist shop in NJ. I did the timing belt job with friends over a weekend so am familiar with the front clip removal/install process. I was taken back when quoted 10 hours, assuming $80/hr x10 = $800 labor for $100 parts blew my mind. Good luck on your restore!

Today was a productive day. There was a ton of plastic sucked up under the oil pickup screen, and I'm unable to locate it's source. The only plastic parts I can think of are;
Oil pump tensioer, cam tensioners. If I'm missing something, someone help, because otherwise, clearly there's something broken somewhere. Also, if I could get some advice down near the altenator pics I would be thankful.
Baggies? We aint got no stinkin Baggies.

The AHA gods had to be appeased, a sacrafice was offered for the good fortune of the day (ie, no major engine damage noted. Even the crosshash marks are still there)

Took apart the Altenator so it wouldn't fling new oil crud everywhere, and because itself was caked. This is the after shot

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/100_2045.jpg
this piece broke, it's some sort of tensioner or bushing that the altenator spins on inside the casing. It's plastic, so it's not load bearing. If anyone knows where to buy internal Bosch altenator parts hit me up. Otherwise I'm going to try my Electric reman place.

Unfortunately, the worst possible thing happened and all my valve's got screwd up and are hopelessly in the wrong order, so getting the seat area super clean was critical. The good news is that it was only the intake valves that are in the wrong order, and they were the ones that were mostly clean around the seal area.

I decided today to skip the $80 rings, because
1) $80 for a ring set sounds great at first, until I found out that Grant rings are 'get what you pay for'
2) I forgot for a moment that this is really just the 'temporary' engine.
Assuming I decide to keep it, we're thinking about buying another AHA to bore to 3.0L, or a APB swap.

Would have had more done today, the dealer screwed up my front flange seal and ordered the RMS flange gasket instead, so the oil pans won't be on until wednesday.

Other head is dis-assembled soaking in the parts washer atm. I must say the Valve compressor works as if it was made for these heads and the TDC pin is incredible. it's going to make everything a breeze. Also going to use this as an exuse to buy a cam-lock bar.
The Cam tensioner wasen't compressing properly with the tool when I went to remove it, I had to take both cams off at once infact. Crossing my fingers that this $500 pos isn't seized for good

Starting to come together, Auto-crap (autozone) decided to give me STD size vac hose, which is simply too lose for the front CC valve (and I have to put that on before securing the I/M) so a Trip to Napa will be required tomorrow before it comes together on the I/M side.
After getting the ALT back together, I then disovered that one of the bearings was bad. Broke down and had my local shop rebuild it. Clearly they did a better job than I, and it only cost $60 since I had the VR already. Not bad considering they're $150+ reman @ autozone.
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/DSC_0076.jpg
If you've got a good eye, you can see what was replaced (not much) , cleaned up the combi-valves with 2-3 cans of brake cleaner and brake fluid later and a vac-pump verifies that they work. I'm hoping this was my idle issue, after seeing how bad they were I can't imagine they were working at all.

Should be back together within 1-2 weeks. Ordered the transmission stuff today. Still need some small seals, lots of vac-hose/plastic hard hose and plugs, oil, and tires. Also need the special Exhaust manifold locking nuts that have the hex fitting insite as well as being hex shaped. Anyone know what I'm talking about and where to get them/ part numbers? Also, anyone know what kind of thermal grease for the flex pipe is best? All I can think of using is some Artic silver Cremique that's used for Compuer applications, but I think it'll just run down if I used it for this. Also was able to bend the Acessory Idler pully back into alignment, which saved me a nice $250.

It's been a long road, and according to Vag-com there's still lots to go, not many pictures to log the day, I was trying to focus and get her starting, which I accomplished.
Shit that happened today however; 2 studs on the passenger side decided that their threads would strip and take 2-3 hours to remove/replace. What a Pain to say the least...
ran out of ATF fluid (had 7L), I'll have to see if someone has some ATF1 that's not 5 years old like Napa did, although they do apparently now have CHF11S for only $1 more than ECS, so that was a win for today.
No leaks that I can see so far.
http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz56/blmlozz/DSC_2085Medium.jpg
Vag-com so far has trans-codes like the A4 did, from what I've been told this is a wire-harness on the valve-body that has become too brittle or cracked. Which means the $100 of ATF fluid I just dumped will get drained. Not going to mess with this right now unless it turns out that there's something seriously wrong with the trans. From my understanding the only issue that arises from the codes is a clicking noise when shifting.
Also have 2-3 O2 codes, and another Cam pos code. Cleared them since I primed the car a bit with the plug wires and injectors yanked. Hoping it's just a glitch in the matrix.

Sit rep;
Front end is back together.
P/S pump is bad
Speedo works perfect now
has tons of power (or at least it seems ~ right)
Trans shifts smooth. Should get better after I add another 1-2 quarts
I think one of the lifters is stuck a bit, but I've only put 7-8 miles on the engine, and it's definitely not as loud as it was the first time I drove around the neighborhood .
Heater hose's are leaking.
Tip mode does not work.. Probably because the keys I have are valet keys.

Wow, nicely done sir!!! I love to see stuff like this. It's very seldom that someone has the will to restore a car like this. Never mind to do it as thoroughly as you've done it. Nice to see someone bucking the trend, CAPTAIN APPROVED!!!!!!

It's entirely plausiable that it just doesn't work. There are several solenoid codes on the trans right now. I was about to buy $100 worth of sport tip wheel from a member, so it's a good thing I know it doesn't work through the shifter even.

haven't gotten to it. My focus is getting it on the road and passing inspection. Details will be fixed at a slower rate. I'll give them a look though if I run out of stuff to do this week, since the procedure to remove the shifter assembly looks like a pain, thanks for the suggestion though.

If you have to replace the atf again, use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF instead. Cheaper, better and recommended/used by a transmission specialist from the A8 forum who rebuilds transmissions daily(TozoM8).

Definitely better than the Pentosin Audi/VW claims is lifetime for our cars. I would throw in some lube guard too. These ZF trannys are too touchy. I use their diff oils also. The auto tranny shifts better for me after the swap. If you want more pentosin though, I can sell you the ones I got that came with my atf kit from Blauparts. =)

Sorry to burst your bubble, OP, but you aren't even the first hybrid that also has a pontiac to rebuild an avant. Mine was rescued from the junkyard with a broken timing belt, about $600 in parts and 3 months later it was on the road. But I must say, I'm quite glad its a C4 due to room around the engine (CAVERNOUS IN COMPARISON!)
My Pontiac is a 2001 GTP Sedan. Sadly, I am becoming quite dissatisfied with the chassis flex and general low quality feel of the car, and want an A6 2.7t 6sp instead.
Regarding your tech stuff, here is an interesting read for you: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=266807

I'm bit of yes and no on this one, after going on my favorite roads, I'd say the G8 is as fast or faster around bends stock than my 2+ S4 on bilsteins was. However, I also notice daily how absolutely spartan It is interior wise.. it's probally a good thing, less shit to break, but an 09 that lacks a homelink and navigation? meh...

The G8 is SO not like previous American GM cars. It's a global car, after all, with an Aussie bent. That, and GM has been on the up-and-up in the past few years. A 2001 Pontiac is definitely going to be disappointing compared to a European car, but a G8 basically is a European car.

exactly. 5 series style rear suspension, a small block V8 with tons of aftermarket, a simple 6L80E trans that's used in tons of cars @ home, great looks, LSD, near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, it has parts swap capabiility with the camaro. What more could you ask for? Aside from the survival of the brand of course.
I'm 100% happy I didn't pick up an E60 M5, because I would have missed soon to be one of the most over-looked enthusiast cars available.

the 2011 Malibu and Impala's I've been given as rental cars suck. The G8, does not. Unless a lack of equipment is suckage, but I'm not too unhappy about it. 5 years from now it would have been broken anyway. All I have to worry about are window regulators, a sunroof and heated seats.
anyway, back to the A6.
I've done a few small things this week, changed the rear diff fluid, added my last quart of trans fluid, washed her finnaly, cleaned up the two front rims, bought 4 new eagle GT tires, fixed the front bumper and fender alignment as best I could (the front bumper is just trashed, so it'll have to do for now), polished the front headlights, and snagged a FCP Groton full control arm/ TRE kit for $189 when it went on sale.

there are still a few oil leaks, I may have to re-seal the lower oil pan, and the oil cooler had a drip from it that I may look at as well. When I get paid this week, I'm also going to be ordering a full set of OEM sachs struts, and go for the expensive ($171/unit) updated gas-charged rear struts.

they're sachs that are 50% off. They're OEM struts, but they're not from the dealer. HD bilsteins are just as expensive/cheap, and I can't bring myself to put some monroe/kyb garbage on it.

Miles driven thus far. Finnaly got all DTC's erased, so far in ~ 30miles of driving, only an 02 code, a brake light implausible code and a BS code for the light bar in the rear seats not being pluged in have come up. No airbag light, no trans codes, no mile long interior codes (because I've fixed the truck lock)

Turned all 4 rotors, all new Brake Pads. Duralast Gold's are 'good enough', just bought something I could get locally, Plan on OEM upgrades if I find the cash later.
the Interior as of right now.

Awesome progress, you just completed... what..? $7500.00? in work yourself! Amazing.
Try pumping the brakes once right before you scan the Auto Trans controller it'll be gone! something about the static state of the brake switch thru TCM tricks VCDS to showing a code.

You didn't do that did you? naaaaah....did they make the interior color matched in BLUE ? I sort of knew they did, but I've never seen it. Seen red, Tan, "yellow", combo packages, but not the blue!
We have the same 99" Avant, so glad the interior is "light black" .

that's stock. The carpet came almost 100% clean. Some idiot put a battery where the white spot is(it's battery acid that ate away @ the carpet)
going to get it inspected this weekend, and then tackle the dashboard removal to R&R the heater core/heater hoses.

sweet, thanks. It was working fine, so I didn't think much about it. Still no interior codes aside from the trunk button not being plugged in. I'm stunned that the *only* actual broken part that's throwing a code is one of the front O2 Sensors-- but I was going to give it a new set of upstream sensors anyway for the MPG.
I know One of the actuator motors for the Dual zone function is broken too, so that's missing, but the airbag codes have not come back, nor have the transmission codes.

50% off a quality part is enough for me. [up] Though I have Bilstein sports, came with the ECS kit. Pretty happy, though they are coming off to make way for coilovers. Moarlowarz is cool, but it sucks in 10" of snow...

Not really a whole lot, I've been driving it as a daily. She's been 100% reliable so far.
I ransacked a salvage 2.7T for it's sport seats, the rear seats and the front knuckle's/HP2 calipers/rotors to throw on the A6, but after I bought the cadillac she sort of got put on the back burner.
