Looking into purchasing a used 2000-2004 Audi A6 4.2 Sport this summer as a daily driver.

I don't know a whole lot about them, but it's one of the models I'm considering. What should I look out for? What packages should I look into? What comes standard?

My question is, would I be missing out on anything were I to purchase a 2000 over a 2002?

not likely

and I'm looking to get a 4.2 or a 2.7T with triptonic transmission over the 2.7T 6spd I have now

Other than the transmission fluids, are there any major things I'd be needing to replace. I'd probably be purchasing a 2000 with apprx. 50,000 miles. What goes at this mileage?

I Love mine!! (see pic below) Picked it up for $18K. Ive put 25K miles on it in one year. It has Nav, Cold Weather, Sound, Light, and Premium Packages. Everything but sport...but I put an RS6 spoiler on it, and am looking to mod it.
On 2000s, Big tune ups come every 32K, water pump/timing belt around 90k. Make sure you get a good alighnment, or it will EAT tires. I run ContiExtremes 255/40ZR17, and am loving the all weather handling and good tread life. Suspension parts wear out, and are expensive to replace. CV boots break, and the lower oil pan and camshaft adjuster seals can leak.
Its true the tranny fluid is a 'lifetime fill' on these cars, although they are known for killing torque converters from time to time. Its not on every car, but it can happen.
Im just trying to name the things that can go bad. Ive been very happy with it, and everyone wants a ride when you first get it. It really is a great car, and I love it to death.

Check out this link; It should address your question:

In MY '02, Audi used thicker glass and more insulation to keep the interior noise level down. Auto trannys also came with a "sport" mode in which the tranny shifts at a higher rpm and stays in each gear longer. Also (at least on the 4.2) came with tip shift buttons on the steering wheel. '02 also introduced the exposed exhaust tips.

I'd really like a 2002, but I think a 2000 or a 2001 is more along the lines of my budget at the moment. Thanks for the great advice. Anything else you can tell me that might be important when actually purchasing the vehicle? Things to look for that might be dead giveaways of greater problems?

Take a pocket flashlight and look at the brake pads and suspention parts, just to make sure nothing is grinding or falling apart. The boots on the suspention ball joints rupture before failing. and hit some small potholes or dips in the road...see if anything is shaking up front or making noise.
Oh, and once the engine is warm, dont be afraid to slap the tranny around. Rev it good and throw the gears around in tip. If the tranny stalls or slams gears, say away!
