This project was started in the spring of 2010 - it is still in its developmental stages.
This execution of a purpose built b5 seems to be a first in the U.S. Therefore, there is very limited information as to how to develop a drift B5, and so, any feedback and constructive criticism is welcome.

no steering-rack/tie-rod/steering-upright modifications done as of now.
up to this weekend, the car was still in the tire/suspension development/tuning stages - more specifically, we've mostly been doing testing with shock valving, alignment settings, and tire combo's.
sadly, this type of extensive testing/tuning is necessary since there is no real solid info out there as to how to make a good b5 drift car.
the car endured about 5 straight hours of drifting this past sat and 4hours on sunday.
at this point, we feel the suspension/alignment is dialed in pretty well. (specific details to come in the build thread)
the main focus of the project now is making the entire car reliable.
the car started to show signs of weakness in the cooling system during the long sessions.
is seems the radiator doesnt get enough airflow when you're sideways (go figure) and starts to overheat until the car was driven in a straight line, or the other option was to drift with the AC on (BONUS!) which activates the secondary fan into high speed.
the thermostatic fan switch on the radiator seems to react too slowly to the extremely quick buildup of heat in the cooling system during the 30-60sec full throttle drift runs.
only after the car comes to a stop - would the switch realize the coolant was superheated - and by that point the car would already be overheating.
the next step in the project is to remedy this issue.

next event is june 18th near albany NY if anyone is interested in lending a helping hand.
free ride alongs during the drift event in the drift b5 included if you bring your own SA2000-2005 helmet.

Need to switch to an electric fan, andmodify it for a manual overide. Someone did it on AudiWorld once.

I've done the electric fan with an independent temp switch which I was easily able to adjust. I suspect they will be going with something similar. I was able to pick up everything I needed at the local parts store. Which is funny because that's what I used to solve my cooling issues back in the day of drifting years ago. I had two settings dialed in. One for spirited/drift and one for street.
As for the drift car, looks like an absolute blast. I do miss the nissan scene. I just wish it didn't blow up as big as it did, i'd probably still be building them haha. they were a lot of fun though.

this is most likely what we plan to do. in addition, we may also end up installing the B5S4 push fan thats located front of their condensors.
the clutch fan is likely to stay as a fail safe against the electric fans failing.
so in total, the cooling system will end up being like the B5S4's, with an independant switch with two settings, one for automatic(street) and the other for max cooling(drift)

Bumper ducting should help too. It would ensure that all of the air hitting the bumper openings is directed towards the radiator rather than some air escaping around it.
Ducting, pusher fan, Redline Water Wetter, and you're in business.

looks like a lot of fun. [cool] I welded up a spare center diff and ran RWD last summer (mainly for tuning on a local single roll dyno). It was a lot of fun but really needed a LSD in the rear as I could not put down the power without smoking a tire..even at 40MPH. It did seem to free up a bit of HP in the upper gears and yea, it fell into drifts very easy..too easy. I am back to AWD again, since early winter, as this is my daily driver in the back country. Keep up the great work!

I'm running same width, same compounds front and rear, but I'm running 15s in the rear because they're cheaper. Remember, I usually burn up a full set of rear tires on a day of drifting.

holy crap. i would've gone to every single one of these had i known. when's the next event? so much props to you because everybody was saying it can't be done but it's now been done haha. have you thought about a 4.2 swap? it won't cost a whole a lot and all the power is instantly at your foot. it's all aluminum too
mikmot
09-07-2010, 06:27 AM
everytime i go drifting, i consider the swap. id love the torque of a v8, My 1.8t is far too laggy between throttle applications. ive setup an antilag program with maestro, but its still lacking a bit.
im going to lebanon valley early october. (i give out unlimited ride alongs at lebanon events unless its competition day)

unlimited ride alongs = no problem. just bring a snell approved helmet. its ok if its an expired helmet - the staff at lebanon raceway dont check the dates. just no ridiculous helmets (like a bicycle or snowboard helmet).

Did you have any aftermarket upgrades so that you can add more camber to your car?
mikmot
02-04-2011, 02:05 PM
i only needed more than stock camber for the front.
i relocated the lower control arm mounting points to add camber.
front is at 3degrees.
rear is adjusted to 1.5degrees.
3 degrees is excessive for street cars, and a bit too high for track cars unless theyre on slicks, but its perfect for drift. [wrench]
