I am a total newbie...and I know that people talk about this all the time...so I apologize for beating a dead horse...
I bought a 2.7T Tip allroad about 6 months ago...and I am now considering getting the ECU modified. I have done some research and it seems that most of the companies that do it (APR, AMS, GIAC, etc.) are all pretty solid...
What I need is some unbiased advice from someone who know a lot about cars, or has actually done this to the 2.7T engine...Should I do this to my car???
95% of the time, the stock power is fine...but I used to drive a WRX and it was sorta fun to let it rip every once in a while...so I would use the extra power every once in a while. However, for the most part, I take it easy on the roads...
The bottom line is that I am afraid of hurting the car, and getting denied on the warranty...
Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy

Thanks Andre and Gimp.
So, from what I understand, there is no way to modify the ECU software so that it is completely undetectable to the dealer. Even with the APR EMCS thing, if they actually open the ECU, they can tell that it has been messed with…right?
What if you have a second ECU, modify it, then switch back to the original ECU whenever you take the car into the dealer? Can they tell if you do that?
Not that I would…from what I understand, what really makes dealers mad is when they waste time and money trying to figure out what is wrong with a car when they think that it is "stock," when the ECU has been modified.
Does anyone have any more thoughts on this? I am trying to learn more about cars, so any info would be great.
Thanks a lot,
Andy

GIAC uses a flashloader tech. and thus does not physically touch the ECU for at least the engine. We download the program directly through the OBD II diag. port. Plus, you can get the 2X program so not only is the ECU physically NOT touched, you can switch the programming back to stock with a touch of a button. Now, some will say that the total sum of data is changed in the ECU, but honestly, I have yet to hear of a dealer being able to check that. If you are worried about that happening, you might as well never modify your car.

BTW We rest the flash counter too so that won't show either

I have a 2000 2.7T and I decided to go with an APR 2 program chip. The part that I like the best from this particular chip is that I can switch from chipped mode and stock mode by just holding down the cruise control reset button.
There is no need for a seperate module like the Giac chip. Also with the APR I can switch modes while driving. This cannot be done with the Giac.
Another thing to look into is I don't believe the ECU is flashable. My year the 2000 has to physically rechipped. I am not sure is newer model 2.7 are flashable. I know that all year A6 4.2 are not flashable. (1998-2004).
Anyway as far as the differance. WOW. best thing you can do for the money. power is significantly increased at 3500-up rpms. The numbers I retrieved of the internet are 5.4sec 0-60 mph and 13.5 in the 1.4mile. These numbers were not told to be auto or stick. I have seen a A6 auto at the dragstrip lay down mid 13s runs looking bone stock. The power rated from APR is 60HP and 110 torque. This puts the power at 318hp and 382ft/lbs with the 93 octane program.
