Hey Guys,

I have been procrastinating making a build thread, but i decided it was time to share what i am working on with the community. This is my second S4 and my third B5, the purpose of this build is two fold. I want to test my mechanical abilities by doing as much of the build myself and with the help of others. Secondly, i am excited to test the limits and see what these tial 605s can do with a built bottom end. In order to make the build go faster i purchased a spare shortblock locally that is currently at the machine shop. I have almost all of the parts i need, I think!!! I will be posting updates as much as possible and asking a ton of questions as i am a novice mechanic. Thanks in advance for everyones hlelp.

The car is currently a strong stage 2+ car. With the following mods:

GIAC X
Piggy straight pipes (which are for sale)
AWE Twin 1
Vast Stage 4 clutch + LWFW
APR Bi-pipe
JHM BBK
BBS RS-GT w/ Michelin PS2s
Vogtland Coils
AVIC D3
And a bunch other other irrelevant stuff.

The car ran great and is the most reliable Audi i have owned.

I could not get the front crank bolt off so i had the machine shop take care of it. The shortblock should be ready within the next two weeks. The goal is to be completed with the project by the end of June. More importantly i want to drive to to Waterfest and H2O!!

tearing down my motor. This was very nerve racking i broke a few thinks mainly the spider hose. It was extremely brittle.

You guys are AWESOME!!

I would like to be put in the build section if i am worthy!! Mods Please.

I am planning on going to the machine shop tomorrow to check on the progress.
I would like to thank a few people you have help me already: Mike (Gearhead), Tony and Dave @ EPL, Joe the auditech, the guys i rent my garage from (John, Dave and Dave), And everyone else for their support.

Thanks Matt, i think your car is extremely clean and when ur ready to sell i will be first in line. Like seriously.

EPL no longer uses the seimens 630s. My nogaro had them and the idle was fucked up. These should flow more than enough fuel.

BTW Mike (Gearhead) and i are going to On track karting tomorrow night if anyones down. PM me

I am keeping a spreadsheet of all of the costs. Its adding up very quickly, but i reserved extra money for emergencies and impulse buys.

That's where a lot of people get in trouble not having that extra $ set aside for things that break druing install ect. You'll be glad you set that money aside for sure.

I'm in to see the final product should be a real beast and a blast to drive when finished. Good luck!

Tony doesn't use the direct plug connectors? There is a connector available that is USCAR one one side and on the other side its Minimeter. No wires inbetween. That is what I have on my EV14s.

Today i went to the machine shop to drop off the rods and bearings. The machine shop will be assembling the bottom end and i will be doing the rest here are the pics:

any type of strong degreaser that you can find at a regular auto store would work.. a prep spray that removes oil/grease/wax b4 paint works even better but is slightly more expensive.

I would have bro, my nephews got me a freakin cold it's by far the worst thing in the world... Haven't been sick in 6 months and then thanks to them I can't breathe. But yeah, I put together a pretty good sized drive down to WF last year, I'll start organizing it early June. [up]

Okay small update but unfortunately no pics yet.

I picked up my assembled shortblock from Center Auto Machine Shop in Stratford. I really cant say enough about these guys, they are awesome. I painted the block flat black as well as the Y-pipe silver and i am in the process of cleaning the heads. So far they are coming out very clean. While i was at the machine shop i had them hot tank a bunch of stuff and it came out super clean.

While in Stratford i stopped by EPL to have my base tune loaded onto my ECU. To my surprise, i was lucky enough to get my hands on a X1-Carbon fiber intake. YES!!! This may be the last one in existence but i hope not, its such a great piece.

I have a feeling the only thing that is going to hold up the process is the powder coater. I am going to work on the car Thursday night. Hoping to have the longblock assembled and t-belt on.
I will post pics tomorrow of todays progress. Thanks for following the thread. We are right on track and dare i say ahead of schedule :)

UPDATE!!!

It has been such a crazy week, i was all ready to start the long block but i realized i was missing a few gaskets.
This week i clean the shit out of the heads, Picked up and painted the block, power washed the engine bay, and picked up my new DD.

I found the miata on ebay. I was going to bid but changed my mind at the last minute. I wasn't sure if i was going to need a second car based on the fact that i wasn't sure if i was going to get a job with a commute. Long story short i got the job and needed a reliable commuter. My choices were: MK4 GTI, E36 3-series, miata, or another a4. My budget was 6k. I had a hard time finding clean euros for 6k so i went with a miata. I called the dealership and the car was still available and now its mine!! Im still sorting out some of the issues. I got a decent deal but, it needs a few things. I figure i will get it running perfect and then do wheels, suspension, rollbar, and seats. The car has the factory sport package which includes LSD and ground effects. I plan on giving it a full detail sometime this week.

if i didnt have plans with the gf, i would def swing up sunday and give u a hand. i havent done a long block in a while [>_<]. did you get all gaskets and miscellaneous parts to wrap up the longblock sunday?

Ill post a progress picture of the Y pipe when I get home from work tonight.

Finally found time to work on my motor on Sunday night. I was waiting on a few misc. gaskets.

Both oil pans sealed
Oil pump installed
Heads on
Timing belt
Waterpump
T-stat
Block breather installed
Main crank pulley-i realize there is one bolt missing it will be replaced

OKAY BIG UPDATE!!!

I am sooo busy with work, i apologize for not updating sooner. Things are going smoothly and the car should run by the end of the weekend. I am planning on postponing the install of the fuel pump and the HSF-3 until i know that the car starts. I am waiting on the turbo to mani rings i didnt know i needed, should be here tomorrow, then i will pull the motor off the stand and install clutch, flywheel and tranny.

I cant figure out how to mount the hose on the left. I know it is a coolant line and i goes from the expansion tank to the oil cooler but how does it mount.

I could answer all three but im not next to my engine to answer them defiantly. I can say you have answered your own question as far as the coolant expansion tank coolant line. If your talking about the small one. it mounts the the threaded hole just above and to the right of the hose in the picture. I think with a 10mm short bolt with washer.

So you are saying the port on the right is for the wastegate? The bottom is for the charge pressure from the turbo? and the left goes to the spider hose?

The starter wiring should be pretty simple from what I remember. Im pretty sure the wires are on the engine bay harness so the motor would have to be in. Its one thick positive cable and one skinny one with a pastic connector on the end.

I'll probably come up Tuesday or Wednesday. Ill know for sure by the end of the day. When are you planning on having the motor in? I'd love to be there for the first crank!!

Shes alive!!!! After some starter issues she finally runs. The starter is sill making a strange noise on start-up but at least it is running. I may get a new starter to see if that helps. I want thank Mike (gearhead) and Joe for helping me out, they have been a big help. Start up video: Can anyone tell me if they have ever heard this sound before?

hard to tell, but from the video it almost sounds as if the serpentine belt slips a bit...is there enough tension? did you get some cleaning fluid on the belt/pulleys?

So the car drove out of the shop under its own power last night!! But i still have a few issues to iron out before waterfest.

I changed the starter and the noise is still there. It happens every time right before the car turns over. I am at a loss i have no idea why it is making that noise??
I have to get more power steering fluid because i used the wrong kind.
Lastly i cant get my shifter perfectly aligned. I either dont have 6th gear or i dont have reverse??

The HSF3 kit is fully installed i just have to mount the tank and clean up the wiring. I am scheduled for my tune Thursday morning, its going to be really close!!!
Let me know if you have any ideas regarding the issues above, your advice is greatly appreciated. Pics to follow.

car sounds great. from that video clip it sounds quite understated, which is always refreshing to me. congrats on all the hard work. i definitely respect it.

about the noise, i tend to agree with this. however, if it was the belt, i also tend to think it would probably make noise under acceleration or hard throttle blips. have you checked the main pulley for grease or any sort of lubricant that shouldn't be there?

Pics as promised. I decided to leave the starter issue for now. The sound is embarrassing but it does not seem to get worse. I will most likely fix it after WaterFest. The only issue left is the shifter alignment. I followed the JHM DIY exactly and i am still having trouble. I am going to swap my stock shifter in tomorrow to see if that makes a difference. Regardless i most likely will be getting tuned on Thursday. I still have to clean up the engine bay and put some trim back on. I hope to see some of you at WF!!

I took the car for a short drive today. except for a few minor leaks that i fixed the car is running great. I am afraid to get on it hard but i did do some third gear 3/4 throttle pulls. Let me just say it spools VERY fast.

ill hop in. when i was there this past weekend, we couldnt get it into 6th even though we had 5th. i tried adjust it to the extreme right for testing purposes and I still couldnt get 6th. only 5th. unless evan tried something different thats how it stood saturday night.

Just for the record i think this is the cause of my shifter problems. I did not recive instructions to modify the linkage as shown above. I will do so tonight and hopefully i am all set for tuning tomorrow!!!

Last night i spent like 4 hours getting the linkage off and modifiying it. It had to be the worst job in the world. My hands are cut and bleeding. I was able to attain all gears and it looks like im ready for Waterfest.
Bad news is it looks like i wont be tuned for Waterfest. I would have had to drive the car to EPL late last night for tune this morning and i couldnt find a ride last night. I may try and get it tuned Friday but, most likely i will run it on the basr tune and then get the tune sometime next week.
I still have to complete a few finishing items on the car like trim, engine covers, and put the interior back together. I am taking friday off the clean up the car and try and score some meth!! If anyone is interested in a small detail day in southern CT on Friday PM me.

Waterfest went relatively smoothly, seeing that i had 20 miles on the car before we left. The coolant line going to my block popped off in the middle of time square (dont ask). When i got to waterfest i was able to find a clip to hold the hose on at the show.

The car still has serious starter noise. I have put around 800 miles on it with the base tune and the car has yet to leave me stranded. I have been DDing the car because my miata is down for an unexpected engine build.

On an awkward note my hood cable must of fallen off so now i cant pop my hood. Anyone have a solution?????
I plan on having my Audi Tech drop the tranny this weekend while i am on vacation. After i sort out these minor issues i will get my tune. Hopefully it will be sometime next week.

Run them in parallel. Only run a second one inline if you need to run 5BAR FP. Inline just helps keep the pressure up. In parallel will actually flow a lot more fuel.

yea i think we spoke about this before. ideally running them in parallel would be better since it effectively doubles the flow. but with simplicity in mind, running them in series would double pump head/psi and should still provide me with the fuel I need since flow is also partially increased. AMD's 770 car ran two 044s in series and so did another 770 car EPL tuned. Ill have to BS with them a bit and then Ill decide. Anyways back on topic..

I saw that happen on a friends car. If it did, you can pop the grill out with the hood closed than open the hood from there.

Hey Guys,

Sorry for the lack of progress in the thread. I wanted to make sure i had news to post regarding the starting issue. It turned out that i was missing one of the dowel pins that goes in the hole where the bolt goes through the bell housing into the starter. This was causing the starter to be off center. The car starts normally now (a little long but at least it starts). The only issues i want to sort out now are small boost leaks and figure out why my boost gauge doesnt work, i think the line is pintched. Also, i need to check my car for codes to see if there is anything irregular.

Unfortunatly, Tony at EPL is on vaca untill the 15th, so tuning will have to happen that week. I am going to have these issues sorted out sometime this week.

On a side note my miata motor spun a rod bearing so that is in build mode as well. Bad timing but at least i have a car to drive.

I have the same starting sound. I replaced the starter 3 times and made sure it sits perfectly before tightening it. I still can't get rid of the noise. I am glad you got yours fixed, I wish mine would go away somehow.

Ur problem sounds very similar to mine, make sure you have both of the dowel pins. If you do then the only other option is the flywheel. Good luck let me know if i can help at all.

You know, I really don't remember if both dowel pins are there. I know one is there for sure because I was able to see if with the starter off but I don't remember about the other one. I know the starter feels like it sits on top of one of them perfectly because I was able to leave it attached on the dowel pin alone and it wouldn't move. I don't remember if the other one was there though as I was able to rotate it somewhat freely to fit the upper bolt through. Hmm... I really don't feel like taking the starter out again, especially when my car is finally all together. I can loosen the bolts holding the starter and try to move the starter around, see if the dowel pins are both there and aligning it but if they are not I will be SOL, unless I just tighten it at a good position, perfectly centered as if the dowel pin is there.

The flywheel is a newly resurfaced dual mass flywheel I got from Vast. I made sure it's nice and tight on there, torqued it to spec... I really don't see where I could have messed up there. I also don't see how the starter being misaligned can produce such a screeching sounds at startup, I would have expected a loud grinding noise instead of this "belt-slipping" sound. However, it's definitely from that area and your solution to the problem seems to confirm that's the cause so I will try to fix it somehow, the least painful way :)

What RPM are you hitting 23? How does the low end feel, pretty sad or moves along fine?

I was having missfire problems due to a faulty o2 sensor so EPL was able to install a new one today and through the car on the dyno late in the day. The car is making power with no issues but tony needs more time to dial it in. I will be posting a more exciting update tomorrow. They had 90+ degree shop temps today :(

i had them stop around 510 since I was on granny suspension and brakes. plus I needed a bigger MAF and more fuel pump to finish the pump gas tune anyways. It was pretty much just to get me off the base tune.

It looks like EPL is going to need another day with the car. They are making like 470whp but tony wants to add more boost on monday. This is like torture but, i would rather they take their time and dial in the tune and make the most power possible.

I was supposed to bring my car to EPL last monday for tuning. I had to have the hole in the IC repared so i did not get the car there until thursday. Needless to say they need a few more days with the car because i was late getting the car to them. I totally understand and i am willing to wait. Look like the next update will be more exciting. Im hoping to have dyno sheets and Logs on wednesday. As soon as i have them i will post them up.

I have no proof but i talked to Robin at EPL today and he said the car made 497 whp @ 30 psi. I cannot confirm this but i should have dyno sheets and logs tomorrow.

You made 500whp in my book. Throw it on the rollers on a cool day with no humidity and Im sure you will be closer to 510.

If it were 10 degrees cooler out, you'll easily be at 500whp :-) I'm still debating if I want to go with rods or just keep it on a stock block and cross my fingers haha. But 500 whp is also my goal.

Yea, it's defintiely been a while... I miss hanging out down there with all you guys on the weekends. Everything is going well. Finally finished with all my initial training and settling into Fort Drum, NY. Beautiful area but it seems like fall is already hitting us up here. I obviously can't speak for these turbos, but driving a BT car in general (GT2871) the around town lag you won't feel.. It's when you roll onto throttle you'll notice any difference. I personally don't boost around town, I stay in vacuum. I'm sure it's something you can just adapt you and you'd be fine..

You planning on the 605s soon too right?

Yea I'm usually in vac too. 5psi at most. That's good to hear though. I've always wondered how different the daily driver characteristics change with bigger turbos.

I'm thinking about 605's. I haven't fully decided yet, but there is a good chance I'll go with them. I'm still unsure if I want to go with rods or not. But at most it will be 605's and rods (same as Evan's build). I have to do a timing belt and swap downpipes as well as replace my shifter linkages and fix upper and lower oil pan leaks. So it's probably best to just pull the engine to do all that. And while I'm in there I might as well replace (or at least rebuild) my high milage K04's [:D]

I would but unfortunately for my car I only have the .jpg graphs from EPL. I dont have the actual data and I took my car apart 2 days after I got ECUx so I never took logs of my own. Maybe Ill pull some fancy photoshop magic..

Evan, I know exactly what you are talking about. Doing something as extreme as GTs or Tials, there will always be a decent amount of time to get everything running 100%.

The Accel graphs really dont show just how HARD the car pulls. My accell graphs peak at .60g in 3rd, yet i put 3 cars on a 540AWHP 996TT. And they weigh like 3200-3300lbs. And my car is like 3560lbs. And that was with me at 25psi on my mild file, not even my race file which is more aggressive. My Logs and FATS times would show that I am not much faster than a stage 3 car, but it is leaps and bounds faster than my RS6 car was.

Evan, I know exactly what you are talking about. Doing something as extreme as GTs or Tials, there will always be a decent amount of time to get everything running 100%.

The Accel graphs really dont show just how HARD the car pulls. My accell graphs peak at .60g in 3rd, yet i put 3 cars on a 540AWHP 996TT. And they weigh like 3200-3300lbs. And my car is like 3560lbs. And that was with me at 25psi on my mild file, not even my race file which is more aggressive. My Logs and FATS times would show that I am not much faster than a stage 3 car, but it is leaps and bounds faster than my RS6 car was.

Thanks man. Everyday i fix and or tweak something the car is running very well as of now. I hope u plan on going to H20 its in ur back yard!!! Thanks for adding some positivity to the thread.

NP man. I know I got a LOT of flack for my car not making 700awhp yet, and I can understand that expectations are high for all these builds. I had high expectations for my car too, but shit happens and I just dont have the cash to do EVERYTHING that i want/need to do to make the big power. And these things take time, especially when they aren't a shop car, or a shop that stays at a shop till everything is perfect.

I will be at H20i for sure, whether my car is running or not. If it isn't, we will be in the GFs GTi. If you want, PM me your number.

Car is always clean and a DD. Just doesn't make sense. When are yall going to be down at EPL? I need to put some faces to the names.

Ended up shipping it to Stasis. I think it was too much of an investment to buy the oven and all the other bullshit associated. Hopefully get it back somewhat soon. Stoptechs and ER's are in the process of being put on the car so small baby steps. Hopefully we can get it all done some what soon but who knows.

I can meet up at EPL but don't think I can make it to carting however. We shall see.

Time for a karting event!! Friday (tomorrow) night. We will be meeting at EPL between 4:30-5:00 then heading to karting at around 6:00. If you dont want to meet at EPL, meet us at On Track Karting in Wallingford at 6:00. I plan on doing 3 races and then grabbing some dinner and beer. Please let me know if you will be attending and how many people you are bringing ASAP, I'm going to try and reserve the heats for our group only. Should be a great time!!
