View Full Version : Online Storage Help

Hey everyone I need a favor from the masses. I store files online through a program called dropbox. It's a great little program that gives you a folder on any computer you install it on and it syncs up all the computers so if you place a file in one it shows up on all the others. At the same time if you update a file it updates all the files.
No this isn't spam. I really am typing this :)
Anyways it gives you 2 gig free space to start but I'm pretty well out of space. I use this file for all my vag com files and anything else I work on while I'm on the road. Well I'm out of space. Now if People sign up by my referral I get an additional 250mb of space up to 8 gig.
I was hoping some of you could sign up for me so I can get some more space. Not to worry there are no spam mails or popups or anything like that. It's just a great free service (although they offer paid service) that works like a charm with great speeds. Anyways a free account can get up to 8 gig with referrals which is incredible really.
So if you have a few minutes to spare and would like to help out here is my link https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTQ2Nzg5NDA5 any help would be appreciated.

Had to check to see if the post was still here. Surprised only one person was willing to help so far.

That was me [:)]
Is there any way to use it w/out downloading the program? In other words, can it be used purely from a web interface?

I know it it was you :)
It shows me a list of referrals that signed up.
I never really looked at using it without the program because it works so well with it BUT since you asked I went and looked and yes you can. If you sign into your account you can go to screen that shows you all your files and you can upload, create new folders and view the files right from their website.
I really do like the service, considering all the file sharing programs and sites out there, this is about the only one that doesn't limit your speed or downloading of files. It's a really handy place for me to keep backup files of my website and stuff I'm working on so no matter where I am I have access to them.

^Ya I email myself a lot of files; figured I need a real online storage solution anyway and why not help someone out in the process? [:)]
Thx for looking into the web interface; I'll check it out.

WOOHOO!! Now I'm only using 114% of my box lol. Thanks to the 4 people who have signed up so far.
Still have a ton of files waiting to sync. Since I use 3 different computers for all this Audi stuff it really is a tool that helps me out. It's amazing how many PDF's and files you accumulate in research while working on all this stuff. I don't use drop box for anything but my Audi work so I really do appreciate the help.

dave, i actually have a hosting plan with space to spare. i don't know if you want to use FTP but if you're interested I can make you a login / pw with your own directory. haven't looked at the quota but i can spare at least 10-20GB.
donno how comfortable you are having htis stuff hosted on someone else's plan but if all else fails, it's there for ya!
at the very least, anyone who has ever asked david for help should take the 2 seconds it takes to make an account w/ drop box!

Thanks for the offer Hender, finding a place to put the stuff isn't that bad it was more of the convenience of drop box. It looks like if you don't install the software they don't give you full credit for the referral. It really is a great system I'm surprised more people wouldn't have a use for it. Even more surprised that after all the help I gave no one was interested in returning the favor with nothing more than a few meg of disk space for a program and sign up. I do appreciate the 4 of you that tried to help though.
Stuff like that depresses me a bit and makes me feel like the work I do is thankless sometimes. People need to remember that sharing the work is almost as laboring as doing the work. DIY's can double the install times and then add huge amounts of work to publish. Answering questions on part numbers and install help all takes time. If it wasn't for all the work I do on the computer I would probably have completed most of my mods by now.
Oh well. Maybe time to start rethinking my approach to this help thing.

you assholes broke davey!
i installed the referral invitation but i was logged in via another computer. if it didn't now, it should def. activate your space bonus!
& don't lose faith in the community, david ** no matter what little return you get, you'll always have members of the group who would jump to help you out like you do for them. they, too, benefit from your posted experience, so if anything do it for them!

Thanks Joeyo, your signing up finally allowed my box to sync. I'm still at 98% full but at least all my computers can sync now. Much appreciated.

Thanks it helps, I just went from 98% to 90 full. So I have a bit of play now. I don't transfer a lot but it's frustrating. I hate carrying around stuff from one computer to the next with a USB drive.

Thanks guys it does help. When I am working on the car I use my mini PC and capture all pictures and so forth directly to the dropbox folder so It's on my mac when I go back inside. I really do use this service on an ongoing basis and makes projects easier.

don't know about drop box but you can get a hosting account from lets say dreamhost and get almost unlimited storage and data transfer, they usually have coupon deals where you can get the first year for about 10 dollars (and 100 bucks each year after the first year), if you decided to go this way I can assist you with settings it up

I already had a dropbox account, but I made a new one and just signed in with it instead of re-installing the application.
I used my cgalvan1337@gmail.com address, so let me know if it gave you the referral credit.

If you really run out of space google docs gives you 1 gig of space for free...and if you just archive things in gmail you have infinite space. But dropbox is a much nicer interface if you can get the space. Good luck!
