This will probably get moved to the General Car Talk soon, but I thought it deserved some B8 time.
For a ~3300lb car, this is pretty damn good...
* The Sonata 2.0T debuts with Hyundai's first four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine
* With a best-in-class 34 mpg highway fuel economy rating, the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine also delivers a best-in-class 274 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque across a broad rpm range – 1,800 rpm – 4,500 rpm – giving the Sonata 2.0T four-cylinder more power than many V6 engines, all on regular fuel
* The new 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine is part of Hyundai's Blue Drive strategy that aims to lead the industry in fuel efficiency and sustainability
* The twin-scroll turbo system design minimizes turbocharger lag while maximizing combustion efficiency and power output

Wonder if they'll give it a LSD to put that power down - pretty sure that platform is still FWD...

Decent car with decent looks but it's still a Hyundai. When the Genesis was on display at the LA car show, I had asked a rep if you could order the car without the badges because everything else about the car was good (at the price point). All I can say is, "If looks can kill". I didn't get an answer and the rep actually walked away from me. To this day, I still say it was a valid question.

Hahha. Of course it was. And I'm still not going to buy one, but they're progressing much faster than I anticipated. If it weren't for their badge, nobody would/should buy Honda or Toyota.

Hyundai is making huge gains in customer appeal. Last year they were the only major manufacturer to post a sales gain (Subaru was close), while all other manufacturers were posting huge sales losses (drops of 35%+). They are making significant inroads into the American market, and only the lingering perception from their early bargain-basement days has kept them from being considered a peer of Honda/Toyota/Nissan.
Hyundai makes some pretty good cars these days, but obviously not as a competitor to Audi.

That's a mighty powerful and efficient 2 liter. Hyundai deserves kudos for continually stepping up their game.

Goes to show that the 211hp we make on are 2.0Ts is a little bit conservative if you ask me. I think we can bump them up just a bit and not have to worry about things blowing popping off. I am sure the Hyundai is running more Boost then we are for sure.

Mitsubishi evos are 2.0T and they are running 290 from the factory with 25-28 psi, our 211 and 11 psi is def on the conservative side. Audi needs to step theirs up a bit especially since alot more car companies are starting to run the 2.0T set up. Just a thought.

Impressive output, but ugly as sin.

I actually read in Motor Trend that Hyundai has a fairly high-profile car designer that used to work for Audi. There was some comment about the bigwigs not allowing him full creative freedom tho, cuz they all rose the ranks from technical positions. This would explain the excellent specs of this new engine as well as the hideous exterior aesthetics of the cars.

I thought I would resurrect this thread since I just saw the commercial for the turbo.
Aluminum block, Reinforced rods/pistons, twin-scroll Mitsubishi turbo, 600-700 lighter, more HP/TQ and 1000's less.....I hope Audi is watching because this car's going to spank an A4..........I would be even worried racing this car up until stage 3. Hyundai will never have the prestige, luxury or (possibly) AWD system that Audi has but they certainly put together a nice power plant!!!

call me biased since I owned a Hyundai before, when they just started stepping up their game - but I gotta disagree on the luxury stance! The new genesis sedan and upcoming Equis are both pretty damn luxurious. When I had one as a loaner, the base A3 felt as luxurious as a Hyundai....
Although I agree, it would take the automotive community / society in general to accept Hyundai as an equivalent to MB Audi etc...but offerings like the B200 really do dip below even Hyundai's middle-to-lower-end offerings. (Maybe not an accent, but you get the idea...)

Just had a look at the Equis.....wow, is that a stunning package.....are they going after Bentley now? :)

I think it's a very nice looking car.
They are also going to make the Sonata and Genesis line AWD.

If Hyundai keeps going like this, in a few years the badge won't matter, at least not to new generations of car owners. Us old folks have preconcieved prejudices that will blind us to how good Hyundai cars are becoming (aesthetic and spec wise). Just like how old ladies stick w/ their Cadillacs and Buicks we will adamantly say NO to the Hyundai badge. Till my girl buys one that has better interior than mine and smokes me off the light.

I completely agree. They make an excellent vehicle with great amenities and extremely good value.....but as you said I'm having a hard time looking past the mark. If they were from Japan and not Korea and didn't have the history of the Pony days they would appeal to a much larger audience.
IMO the styling is quite nice.....I've seen a few Sonatas and Genesis Coupes on the street that have really caught my "unconscious" eye.

I also think its a nice looking car. If I had to buy a car in the $25k range, I would definitely take a look at the Sonata where before I would laugh at myself even thinking of buying a Hyundai
