where you get those rotors? and did you weigh the different knuckles?

I ended up buying motor/tranny mounts instead :\

*Blue-Angel*
02-15-2010, 09:34 AM
Those are DBA rotors, and I bought them from tirerack.

I weighed the aluminum ones and they came out to be 16lbs on my digital home scale. They are deff lighter than steel but then again I'm gaining weight with those massive rotors so ill take what I can.

Why did you go with Stern uppers control arms and not even have coilovers?

if your going through all oft the trouble rebuilding the car i would definity go with some k04s.

yeah you might as well sell the k03's and pick up a used set of k04's. Trust me you are going to want to in the future and you will be kicking yourself for not doing them now.

*Blue-Angel*
02-15-2010, 10:33 AM

Because I will buy the coilovers in the future. And plus even without the lowering of the car I can adjust the camber up front to be more neg than the rear.

Not practical in my situation. I'm building a block from the ground up and putting tials on. The K03s are just to hold me over until the block is ready. It would be stupid to buy K04s and proper fueling and inlets just to have to upgrade from that in the future. Wasted money.

Yup, that makes perfect sense. Shoulda said somthing about the tials tho lol.

Dimcorner
02-15-2010, 11:37 AM
Yeah that is a good idea. I'm debating on whether to spend on the fueling or save for Tial's.
I got dem K04's to replace the ded K03's, but I'm on a VERY conservative tune (I pulled back boost to 15psi with Lemi, no i'm not getting knock or major timing pulls).

*Blue-Angel*
02-15-2010, 11:54 AM
Plus all the I could find was BWs and they were like 1200 used or slightly less with some miles on them, plus car would drive like ass compared to a proper tuned K03 car. Getting them rebuilt is gonna cost 550 shipped for both of them. So financially it makes sense as well as peace of mind until my built engine is ready to drop in.

Ps I didn't mention the tials because I was going to make a build thread when the time is right. I just wanted to post up all the crap I'm doing now to get this car above 100% working condition.

And again why would you want that? Good to hear Coilovers are in the plans for the future..

Increase turn in and oversteer. That's part of the reason you use camber adjustable links even in lowered cars.

Gotcha.. So the car is going to be more of a track car than a dd. Good luck with all the work

Haha yeah I said K03s and that's pretty much an open book for the bashing comments to commence. But as you read its cost effective as well as practical in my situation. No pics of it all bolted in but I will post pics as the new parts come in and on the car. I've spent a lot and I mean a lot of time lately just trying to clean as much of the damn car as I could. Just keep an eye out for this thread because as the car becomes finished I should have some nice digi pics up of the arms, new driveshaft turbos and clutch as well as those sexy 13.4 in DBA Rotors

And yes car not being built for dd use at all, nore do I plan on putting those kind of miles on the car, it will deff see some track days at sebring, daytona, and miami raceway once completed.

"poper fueling" would be all interchangable minus the tune...which you wouldnt even need if you just have a stg1-2 chip.

not to mention the better gas mileage on k04's.

*Blue-Angel*
02-16-2010, 09:28 AM
That may be true I'm not sure. But I'm shooting for 550 whp with the built block. I really don't want to be buying injectors and mafs appropriate for one and not the other. Plusi don't want to spend all the dough on K04s when I'm buying tials. End of that story just stupid and a throw away of money.

Stephen, Glad you got the uprights! Everything looks awesome!

You picked out an exhaust yet? I'm having a amazing fab guy I know making me a 3.0(or 3.5)in aluminum exhaust for my personal s4. 3in is going to run just a hair under 800 bucks. Full 3in with aluminum muffler and dual 2 1/4 AL tips. Full exhaust is going to weigh just under 10 lbs.

Yeah I got an awesome fab shop as well so either custom 3.5 with flowmaster or GMG 3.5
Haven't decided yet. That will be the last thing I buy on the list.

Aluminum knuckles in replacement of what used to be steel. saved 12lbs in the process ea side

General consensus is that these are 6 lbs. lighter per side, so let us know once you weigh them. I got my alum. uprights on order too.

*Blue-Angel*
02-16-2010, 11:57 AM
I did weight them on my household digital scale and they came in at 16lbs. The only other option I had would be to take them to publix and weigh there to. The guy that sent them got like 16.8 so it comes out to about 12lbs saved each side because the steel ones are about 28lbs.

Well I'm in the process of buying the rest of the parts for the car. The date is set! Should be finalized by Friday the 30th!

Bout 3 weeks left till all the parts come in. Waiting on one massive pallet to arrive with all my goodies. And a few other shipments from 034 and JHM and back to re assemble it all.

Only thing slowing the process is waiting for the 034 downpipes.

Includes new boots, inner & outer joints, amsoil synthetic grease & reused OEM shafts.

You had to provide your own oem axles to be rebuilt? I have these crap EMPI axles and I think they are causing my front end clicking.

*Blue-Angel*
05-05-2010, 10:21 AM
I had garbage chinese axles also. People need to realize how shitty those are and stop buying them. OEM is the best choice unless you have custom aftermarket ones made.

If you have OEM axles you can send those in and get charged 174.95
if you do not have OEM axles you are charged 174.95 + 80 per axle.

That is unfortunetly what I had to pay. But I plan on buying used axles and sending them to raxles for 160 refund as he will do that for front but not the rears.

Don't just take it to the dump & trash it, recycle your scrap and get some $$$ for it!

*Blue-Angel*
05-05-2010, 05:07 PM
Ive already thrown so much metal in the trash you have no clue. Big mistake prolly not. A mistake maybe. But I didnt have the room to store all the crap I cut off and removed from the S4 nore the time to post it and try and sell when I see so much junk already trying to be sold on the forum already. SO I took everything to the dump and tossed it.

I do have the axles tho if someone wants them for 25 bucks or something. I mean people buy them from JHM ect all the time.

Must have over looked this post before. So what muffler did you go with Bryan? I talked to the company here that I mentioned before but he was unable to get me a general quote over the phone. Well I'm not doing the motor build as of yet. Just piecing together a bunch of engine parts. As far as who is building the small block 034 most likely but I have tossed the idea of having eurospec or vast do it as well. I will however be assmling the long block.

Yeah, VAST will be playing with mine in a month or so here if I don't talk myself out of a build again haha. I just know I'd already be setting up a gt build a month after going stg 3 -_- damn predictability. Cash is in hand this time however, so probably forging ahead haha. Gogo roadtrip!

Ehh Im fighting myself whether I should install my vast manis or keep the stock ones. If I go with the VAST manis Im going to throw codes and the car is going to run like ass until I get the EGT sensors coded out which would take awhile because I would need new ECU software????

Or just run the stock manis and save the VAST ones for my 3.0 Tial build.

What you guys think.?

I was wrong about previous weight readings. I read the weight of the aluminum knuckles without the hubs and with bearings. The arms themselves are extremely light. couple pounds. the bearing is pretty damn heavy and the hub even heavier. ALl of it together is probably just under 25 lbs. the Steel one is 28-29 lbs. Ill have to look at some previous measurements and take some weight measurements of these arms with and without everything to see where it all falls.

I can say that the aluminum bearing heavier than a standard bearing by a few pounds.

lol im just outside now finishing up the last touches to them. Leaving the rears painted silver. and the fronts painted half silver half red as pictured.

The suspension and brakes will be on the car by sunday. Gonna roll her out the garage and give it a massive shower. As well as clean the engine bay with water ect. Been using other stuff in the garage and it looks good already but figured while I roll it in the drive way mine as well take the opportunity to shower the bay as well.

Although to update on parts. Seems no one can get anything straight except Pure Motorsport, JHM, and Scott at advanced automotion.

Turbos from compturbo - still lagging behind
manifolds from VAST supposed to here last week and called today to get them to tell me a week and a half which they told me a week and half ago
Intercoolers from ER - Getting repaired and cleaned and who knows when they will arrive
Parts from 034 - Yeah they shipped my pipes and not all of the other stuff I bought.

All In all it appears everyone is cooperating together to completely screw my build over. Nothing is here on time and it remains the same story week after week.

DOnt know y they didnt follow the piping design of the stock manis, but the angle has more of a bend to it and the manifold piping now sits almost an inch closer and actually rubs against the cylinder heads.

You need to shave the corner of your passenger head to make it clear, they're a bit larger than stock and we're working with close quarters..

Yeah I could see the passenger head needs to be shaved down a bit. That's not a problem. My post was actually more towards the drivers side where the manifold doesn't follow the same piping angles and actually rubs against the head. Again it doesn't really matter. They have there flaws like one of the pieces used has a smalled diameter than the following piece. And there's a step instead of being flush. But overall they are nice peieces and hopefully don't have issues with cracks like other manis on the market do.

++ for the bungs, I told them not to bother and did it anyways as good people. Vast :)

None of 034s bushings were the same diameter and required a great deal of machining to remove the excessive materiel. I ultimately had to go to machine shop and have a friend help me press them into the subframe.

I think the min you can run the v3 is about 1.5 right

how much taller are those 255 than what your using now? be sure to take that into consideration that way you can compensate with the coils if need be

I am dropping engine in this weekend and most likely turning key on sunday. I am so tempted to just get in and beat the hell outta the car but I know I cant with all the new goodies and the time that everything needs in order to be where it should ie clutch, tranny. Car will be placed in Valet mode for a lil while in order to keep me from accidentally stomping on the gas!

will have more pics and hopefully some vids of first start up by sunday evening if everything goes as planned!

Dude you should have seen the car when I bought it. The majority of people on here would have overlooked it. The car was sooooo dirty and nasty. Spent so many hours cleaning and cleaning. Only downside now is that I need new exterior (hood, bumper ect ect) Once I get those Ill get the car repainted. Interior is in really good condition minus the sticky cup holder lol. Only two tears on the drivers seat and the rest is immaculate. Guess I should throw in there that Id like to get the fabric redone on the rear deck lid as well as roof.

Update*

The engine is in but nothing is bolted in place except the tranny and motor mounts. Wanted to bleed out the new slave cylinder and line before I went any further and ran into a major problem. The fucking thing leaked fluid all over the place. I am in the process of fixing that so that I can continue with bolting the rest of the car together. On a side note. When a good majority of the air was out of the line during the bleeding phase.

I must say that the SB clutch I had made feels absolutely amazing. Tested some of the gears on the new tranny and short shifter and ohhh my word. Car feels completely different. The drivetrain feels amazing to say the least. I cant wait to get the car on the wheels to feel how this car is really going to behave even if it has K03s its an all around solid fuckin car and is anxiously awaiting its big turbo engine :)

I already have some pictures and parts for the motor build coming in and will post up all those pictures in the future after this portion of the car is finalized and I can get some driving impressions and vids and dynos up. Then on to the next phase!

Finally took a minute to read all the way through the thread. Great thread. I'm sure everyone is grateful for the pics and updates. Wish I could be more help, but I'm still on the injured list. Doesn't look like it will be ready for the Dyno on the 28th eh? Oh well, you don't want to rush anything. Let me know if you are still going to come out to S&R though.

*Blue-Angel*
08-26-2010, 07:45 PM
yeah man im deff not rushing anything with this car. Did that with my last two cars and it just leads to problems. Between the three cars of mine right now and work I really dont have time to finish anything lately. The car is honestly as close as possible to being finished but I am dragging it on because I am still looking to see if any fluid is dripping from the slave cylinder I installed. The other night it looked like some fluid was around the edges of the slave and that just doesnt cut it. I need a perfect seal on that thing. I really dont want to have to yank it yet another time.

Im also sitting here patiently waiting on my driveshaft but things do not look so great with that at the moment.

yessir. I will get in there with a flashlight and my fingers and see what I feel tho. I can access Reverse. 1st-4th at the moment but not 5th and 6th. Im hoping/thinking its just because the gearbox was freshly rebuilt and the input shaft needs to be spinning. But I dont know bout that. I think I should still be able to nail all the gears.

Got her out the garage!
What a day its been. So many issues so many little things to wrap up. Only one major issue left and its the brakes. They mediate between extremely hard and very mushy practically not working. So I am guessing there is a pile of air in the system somewhere. I will try to bleed them out and see if that helps or not and then possibly take it out the garage for a song and dance later around 2am :)

Car is breaking in really nicely. Only put about 78miles on it so far. Car is running stupid rich right now. Getting about 17mpg. Back fires like crazy. The car also appears to have a faulty N75. Nothing new around here lol. Car boosts to ~21 and drops to around 15 and then boosts back to 20 or so and then back to 15. Still need to hook up the Meth controller and get this tune fine tuned a bit. In the process of getting a VAG cable that actually works and updating operating system on my laptop for car so I can run ECUx and send the logs off and get everything smoothed over a bit. Over all the car is a complete blast to drive. I can see everyones pashion for this car and I also understand how this has been a car I adored since 15. Well worth the 11 months it spent in the garage and the very large amount of money it drained from my bank account.

It goes in for alignment tomorrow. And dyno tune next Tues. Stay tuned for more pics and vids and logs in near future.

Das Audi Is finally finished. I had to turn boost down a few psi because of knock because my tune calls for Race gas. At any rate it runs great. Just took bypassing the N75 and using a Perrin MBC to get a controlled and linear boost response.

Im already in the process of gathering parts for my 3.0L 770R turbo engine swap.

What was the issue and solution with the linkage? Just aligning the shifter?

*Blue-Angel*
03-02-2012, 05:39 AM
Very small amount of material that was holding the OEM pieces in place was left to long so when you threw the shifter forward for reverse it was unable to make a complete travel to engage reverse. Took the dremel up to that area and carefully removed a little more material and it was now able to move forward far enough to engage reverse.
