Hello, I am new to this forum.
I am looking into buying a new daily driver. Need something bigger and with AWD and good power. I figure that the A6 2.7T is the car. I will be looking for an Auto and not the 6-speed. Keeping the M3 (in sig) for the weekend.
Can anyone tell me what to look out for?
What are the common problems with these cars? At what mileage to most of these problems occur?
How reliable is the 2.7T engine and turbo's? At what mileage do the turbo's need to replaced or checked?
Are their particular options or years to look out for?
Thanks In Advance

Welcome to the forum! My dad bought a 2001 2.7T about two years ago with around 30,000 miles on it. It's an AMAZING car in comparision to his previous '99 A6 2.8Q. The power and pickup is a lot of fun. However, you are smart to be skeptical with the turbos. We had some oil leak and problems with the turbos at about 55,000 miles and it was quite expensive to fix. I think he had to drop around $3 or $4K to fix 'em. Since having them fixed, we've had no more problems and we have around 72,000 miles on it now. Another problem we've faced in the two years we've owned it has been the O2 sensors. I think he's replaced them once or twice.
The 2.7T is so much more sporty (250hp) and out of the ordinary in comparison to the 2.8 (50hp less). He got the sport package which included bulky and ultra sporty seats to die for along with twin cut five spoke wheels. In the long run it depends on whether you are willing to sacrifice some reliability for sportiness. Another alternative would be the 4.2 which has the power (a 300hp V8 I believe) and the reliability of no turbos.
There are some good deals on 2000 V8s, so you may want to look into those.
Good luck and keep me posted on your buying process. [;)]

Yeah, I picked mine up for $18K, fully loaded with every option except 6disc changer. A few RS6 trim peices later, it rocks. Still looking for the RS6 ultrasport wheels though....

Yeah, my dad has talked about getting rid of the 2.7T and trading up to a used V8 because he says he could see himself getting more miles out of it without as many reliability problems. In addition, the V8 has many options standard that are only options on the other models. I'd like to see some pics when you get through adding all the S-Line accesories BlueMartin, I am sure it looks sweet.

Bad Bimr: If you do find a 2.7T that needs turbos, get a deal on it, and then go to APR and get the RS4 turbo kit. They make them for the A6 as well. Ive heard its a good package, for not much more than factory prices on replacement K03s.

Im in a rut right now....shes planning (and Im paying for) our wedding this October, so the money is going to be tight for a while. But when the gifts roll in *CHA-CHING!* The 4.2 will have some more mods!!!
I thought I had an RS6 exhaust off AW last week, but the guy sold it to someone local a week after I first replied [headbang]
But Im always looking. Im thinking APR chip first, then some RS6 grilles and...any other suggestions??
And would it be cheesy if I put on S6 badges?? too fakey??

I don't think S6 badging would be bad. . . you should try RS6 badging (might be very hard to find though, I am not sure) and I really like the RS6 honeycomb grill so that would look great too. What year is it again? Would the RS6 grill fit on it?

Does the 2001 A6 4.2L V8 auto trans use 'CVT' technology?
Can it be easily upgraded to handle more power?[wrench]
Is that transmission platform the same as the one offered in an RS6?

In the US, CVT started in 2002 only on the 3.0 FWD A6 and 3.0 A4s, and it can only handle 230lb-ft of torque because of the "belts" which drive the wheels. I have CVT, it's smooth, and not too terribly slow, but I wish it could handle more power.
