Alright fellow AZ'ers, most of you guys are not going to like this but to each their own. I am currently about to start putting together a bag setup for my car and thought I would make a thread on how I went about doing it and I also think I am going to do sort of a DIY on this. So as parts start comming in, I'll post in here and let you guys know how it is going.

cheers,
chris

edit: this is what my car looks like as of now.

edit 2: ok, well i know people cant wait for this to take action. for funds, i am selling an arcade pinball machine that i have and i am just waiting for that to sell. i have everything i want writtened out and prepared for order, all i need is to sell the pinball machine and get the money in the bank. i will be going with a bag-over-coil setup for the front. here is a partial list of the things i will be getting.
-viair 480c compressor (maybe 2 if funds permit)
-7 switch switchbox
-universal aerosport front bags
-rears not determined. TBA
-air-zenith gauges (will upgrade later)
-4 smc or asco valves (not going with a front-back-side-side setup)
-smc water separator
-5 gallon 10 port air tank (might wrap it in leather, so color doesnt really matter to me)

those are the main parts i will be getting. everything else if just basically fittings and tubings and wires. will start updating more when said item is sold.

item link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320476445437&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

I have been meaning to DUMP my B5, I am really interested in how you go about this, and what products you decide to use.

Good luck with the build.

i think majority of ppl here support mods like this, as long as it's clean. I know i've always wanted a bagged fullsize... I was debating about doing cylinders on my a4.. but I think i'm gonna try and shoot for bt instead. good luck.. I'm interested.

When you install the bags you should also looosen the control arm connections and then re-tighten them at a lower ride height. Otherwise every time you dump the car you risk tearing the control arm bushings.

Starting my air install next weekend. If you have any questions you should e-mail Santi. He's been helping me out a ton and he's doing most of the install for me. Don't trust myself when it comes to this sort of thing and I don't want to f something up.

I have all my management and the struts and bags should be in next week. I went Mason-Tech front and Chapman rear.

You may want to think about running an 8 valve style set-up. I started with 4 just to try it and then to 8 and the 4 valve way just feels too sloppy. Two way valves can be had for a decent price and will give you independent control over each bag and increase ride quality. Why are you going with the 7 switch?

Just because noone has mentioned it in this thread yet, there are 3-way valves that will allow you to run only 4 valves as opposed to 8. I ran these on my bagged s10. The downside is that they are more expensive and if only one side of it fails (up or down) you have to replace it. But the upside is that they are easier to find space for and the lines and wiring are easier to make clean looking. Also make sure to run check valves if noone has mentioned that. Those things can save you some trouble if you develop leaks. If for whatever reason you find a 4 2-way valve setup (only front/back control) to be the way to go, you can run accumulators to make the ride and handling much better (like the hydro and air cylinder guys run) , but for all that effort and cost outlay, you may as well run valves to each corner.

Better ride quality, while still being able to slam it. Reduction of broken under carriage parts and not having to worry about speed bumps and cops pulling you over for being too low.

From what I understand about bagging (which is very little), in combination with pneumatics...

I didn't think you would want to directly connect the left and right side of an axle (Front or Rear) without using some sort of check valve system. Otherwise, when you make a turn at speed, the outside bags will compress, forcing the air over to the inside bags, increasing body roll?

That makes sense, but like you I have little knowledge of air ride . Anyone know more about this?

It happens with a 4 valve setup. 1 fill and 1 dump for the 2 bags up front and the same with the rear. Its allowing the 2 bags to share the same air, instead of their own. If you run an 8 valve setup, youll have a fill and dump valve for each corner, allowing each bag to hold a certain amount of air and not being shared between the 2.

The only other guy I've seen (local) with a B5 AVANT on bags, had to cut the shock tower open. This allowed the suspension enough room to travel upward, and the car would sit down on the ground.

03-24-2010, 07:31 AM
the complete beauty of bags(for me) is that it can go low and still be able to drive around slighty higher and not beat the sh!t out of your car. many seem to like the "broken" look of the car when it is down.

I drive my car around without beating the crap out of it, just have to watch the roads you dont normaly travel on all the time. Not hating on the OP at all, just if I was doing bags id make sure it'd be sitting on the ground, thats all. Time to start cutting and boxing the shock towers [wrench]

Im currently fitting air ride to the Passat, i would personally get another 4 valves if i was you im running a 8 valve setup. A 4 valve setup shares the air in the between the bags and makes cornering unstable. As it pushes air from one another through the lines as there not seperated.

This diagram may help you out..

I'm working on going lower after I get the rear bags on. The rear still has coilovers on it. As far as the 8v goes, I'm going to upgrade to a accuair manifold later down the road.

To atleast make it over bumps and have a smoother ride. I'll go lower, trust me ;) my control arms already hit the top of the wheel well. I can hear it banging against it when I drive it aired out. also, the wheels already seem very close to touching the top of my fenders. I'm selling them to get some 17 or 16 inch (prefer 17). Once I get my rears back from the machine shop, i'll work on going lower.

Just because it killed two hole saws and an angle grinder wheel and that you haven't had any problems (yet) doesn't mean that what you did is safe. You've just put two huge holes in the shock towers on a car that carries a majority of its weight in the front of its chassis without adding any additional bracing.

As left field as this may be..he killed the angle grinder...not the wheel :)

any suggestions on how to brace that? I guess you could box it out but chances are it wouldn't clear the hood..

I killed the grinder not the wheel. The closer the "wall" to the strut, the thicker it is. The part closer to the fender is a layer of metal literally about 1/8"-1/4" thick. As I progressed closer to the strut tower, it had another layer added of that. What metal it is, idk, but it's some real strong shit.
