View Full Version : Who doesn't like the B6?

Anyone here think that it kind of got away from the sporty compact that the B5 was and is now more a larger, sporty sedan like an A6? I don't think the B5 and B6 really have the same feel. I haven't driven a B6 so this is just an impression I have from seeing them at the dealer.

Well,
I think the B6 is fatter, so like some guys like their girls with with a bit of meat, i like mine nice a petite, thats why i got the smaller of the two. Buttuh the b6 is pretty cool too, just not my type i guess
try. www.mckennaaudi.com, its a dealership in LA with a wide variety of B5, talk to Dan or Dave and tell them Dominic sent you

i didnt like the b6 before, but after driving my friends on i like both for different reasons. the b5 seems a lot more sportier, but the b6 still has that sport feel with a bit more luxury
I still am not a big fan of the B6. I think the lines are kind of weird, and it looks sort of boxy and awkward. Not that i wouldn't mind having one, but it hasn't grown on me yet.
Also, Audi has to stop putting black rubber/plastic on the bottom of the car. It looks lame and cheap. Just paint the damn car out of the box.

all of these posts have been my thoughts exactly.
how'd the A4 go from proudly having all steel exterior panels to black plastic that only looks good new but then just gets addicted to ArmorAll and fades after a year like all the rest of the new/cheap cars that have tons of now fading plastic panels like the Honda Element?

i agree with blacknight, the avants are sick. i would get the b6 avant over the sedan any day. i'm thinking about upgrading to the b6/7 avant in a year or so, we'll see.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
What a sexy car!
As for sedan - I'll stick with my B5. The lines are much smoother and flowing IMO. I'm not ready for the chiseled bodylines yet.

it does look fatter and more luxurious. I have the lowest model A4 im pretty sure(which is still nicely equipped), but it's so light and agile, i'd rather have sportiness than luxury and nice ride.
B6 is too big for me, next car will be an 00-02 S4

I would have bought an E46 3 series or a B6 if I could have afforded one but for the $$ no car beats a B5.
what else can you buy with AWD, leather (ok, leatherette) TIPTRONIC fercrissakes and european style to match.

Seriously, I bought my b5 for $4800. granted, it was a hook up type deal from my boss but the car is mint(for the most part). you just can't beat that. I was about to pay $4k + to get into another decent MK3 jetta

I love both the B5 and B6, as you can see by the pics below I have one of each in my garage. [cool] IMHO The B5 is smooth, nicely rounded and looks better from the front. The B6 looks better from the back and has fatter wheel flares. I really want to keep both but need to convince the wife to get rid of her CRV. The interior of the B6 is much more refined than that of the B5 but the seats suck in the B6. I could go on and on about which car is better but I think both have great looks. Now B6's with out the painted lowers do look odd and the only way I would buy a B6 is either with the painted lowers or the USP. Of course I got the USP[;)]

I was at the lot the other day to drop off my ride for a TB...anyways..thought I'd peroooose the selection a bit and I gotta tell ya..I kept walking up to the B6 saying..man that looks hot and then getting to it and going..eh...maybe not. I guess I like them from far back, but up close they just aren't inspiring. When I got my B5 back from the shop it was parked next to a brand new B6 and I thought to myself..damn my ride is sick compared to that B6. I might be biased and all..but the B6 just doesn't do it for me. The heads and tails are huge..its all around a bigger car and I guess I don't like that. Can't wait to see the B7 in person though..they be FUGLY in pictures but there's no substitute for seeing a car in person.

the B5 never had to "grow" on me. The moment I saw it, I knew that was my next car.
the B6 , though very nice, took some getting used to and had to "grow" on me.
the B7's will be the same way. Many will not like it at first, but eventually, it will "grow" on you.
See my point?
and BTW, the A4 line is a Sport Compact Sedan. The A6 is an actual Sedan.(dealer guy here)

i like the B7. the front end and headlights are great with the exception of the new "trapezoid" shaped grill but I'm sure I'll get used to it. that shape just doesn't look sporty to me, looks too "futuristic". but its an Audi so I guess thats the new sporty cause Audi's pretty much the epitome of sport.
What I don't like about is the cheapo looking all red taillights.. i'm sure they'll have LED's though. they better to make up for the all red blandness.

20X better is a bit extreme. 20X better would be if the interior is in gucci or something with DVD Nav and 5" screens in the headrests. The B6's have that "new" look. Don't confuse it with better.

um no, it is 20x better. we arent comparing ICE here... we are comparing interior quality. The b6 has real leather seats as opposed to leatherette seats. 2ndly there is dual zone climate control, POWER SEATS, better acoustics meaning the non bose b6 stereo sounds better than my bose b5 stereo, rear cup holders in the armrest, more attractive gauge cluster with the rings. Air Leather steering wheel, Air leather shift knob, silver belt trim and shifter plate surround rather than the dark "titanium" belt trim the b5 has. underseat storage drawers, a much larger glovebox, cupholders in the center console, a 6 disc in dash cd changer, *cough* 6 speed transmission *cough* i think thats enough for me to be 20x better, i dunno about you. the interior upgrade alone make the car better than the b5, the exterior has more attractive and updated lines that flow nicely even in stock form. My b5 was heavily modded, and how it sits, the body is far from stock. Stock for stock, a b5 celebration package with 17" rs4 wheels compared to my ultrasport (which would be the closest stock for stock comparison) the ultrasport wins hands down. just wait until i mod this beast to its full potential. [;)] its only a few days old.

the b5 may be lighter, but the b6 has some better suspension components that make it more solid and stable in turning. stock for stock, the b6 wins, modded suspension... im pretty sure the b6 still wins. I had coilovers on my b5 with swaybars and everything, the transition from that setup to the ultrasport b6 was pretty painless, i cant wait until i slap some stasis on here though. that'll be pure ownage.

Dude - I have leather seats, steering and shift knob. I have wood trim, which I think is gorgeous and rich. I do agree that the dual zone control is nice but for the extra money, it ain't worth it.

Overspun you're comparimg your base B5 1.8T to the B6. I have all those things in my B5 now(leather, power seats, chrome rings, wood, cupholders in the center console and rear seats, etc.). and who cares about a 6 cd changer when you have an Ipod or Phatnoise? Dual Climate control is just a selling feature. How many people do you think actually benefit or use it? Bigger glove box? Who cares about that? What do you keep in there, sandwiches? And how much better quality could the leather be? Get real man. I know you just got your car, but come down off your high cloud and realize the truth. The B6 is bigger overall and has a new body and a new engine. It's just newer, not better. . . . and not by 20X.
OverSpun
01-13-2005, 11:26 AM
actually.... i care about all those features. trust me. obviously its a losing battle preaching the B6s greatness in the B5 forum. And yes im comparing to my stock B5, because I'm also comparing to my stock B6. Thats how you would do it fairly. ;)
1999 Audi A4,
You either have a 2.8 or you have no idea what you are talking about with leather seats, because the B5 1.8T never came with real leather.
jones3000
01-13-2005, 11:48 AM
I do have a 2.8, which is why I have those features. I won't list my credentials here, but trust me I know what I'm talking about.
You're comparing a stock B5 to a stock B6, but you missed all the other features cause you had the base 1.8T.
You may think they're "standard", but either way, you payed for it.
Fact is the B6 is a VERY NICE CAR. I like the car and I agree that some of the features may be "useful" to some. But 20X better is a little extreme.

But 20X better is a little extreme.
no, i didnt have a base 1.8T, it was fully loaded, sorry. I didnt want a 2.8 cause they are too slow. same reason i got a 1.8T B6, because the 3.0 is weak and a few mods can make a 1.8T tear it apart.

the only difference I saw between the B5 I bought and a B6 was about 10 grand.
I pride myslef in being 100% debt free. No credit cards and no car loans.
So I wasn't interested in the B6. Nothing like living within your means I guess. Maybe by the time I'm 30 I'll be in the market for the latest Audi, not yet though cause I'll only buy a car with cash and I don't have $35K sitting around to spend on wheels.

the B5 is what brought Audi back to the limelight. Trust me, I had a B4 and seeing another audi around at the time was few and far between. I've driven both the B5 and B6 and prefer the B5's interior and smaller size. I know the B6 is supposed to have a stiffer chasis, but the handling feels bloated compaired to the B5.
BTW, I really wanted to like the B6 over the B5 because I prefered the styling of the A6.

Define "weak". The 3.0L is 225hp. That is not weak. Compared to an M3 or S4 or AMG, the B6 A4 1.8T is weak, no matter what you do to it.
Some people do not care much for engine mods. Maybe that's why their cars run better. Or they would just buy a stock fast car.
Let's just end it here. Your car is better in your opinion versus your previous A4. Done.
I look forward to seeing what you do with it though.

jones, dude, im not tryin to start a huge arguement with you, we have cars of the same brand still, and same model, theres no huge difference at all besides some appearances here and there and whatnot. My b5 1.8T ran perfect the whole time i owned it. not a single boost leak, no blown hoses, or anything and i could eat a 3.0 B6 alive, a 2.8 A4 wasnt even a contest. I'm not gonna heavily mod the b6, just give it a little more power. I drove the 3.0, and yes it makes decent power, and its on tap without any turbo lag, but its still a pretty gutless engine, although in stock form, i agree, the 1.8T is very weak but has a lot of potential. So, agreeing with your last statement, lets leave it at that. We both own A4s, whether or not we have the same engine or bodystyle.. they are both audis as well, no sense in argueing anymore about it. peace. [:)]

B5 is a classic shape, but showing it's age. I've never been a fan of the B6 though, for it's bland looks and interior. It's not really taken off here like the B5 did for those reasons.
Hopefully Audi will produce something nice after the B6 Facelift.

personally, i feel the b6 has a more connected solid feel to the road, i drove a B5 for 2.5 years with a variety of wheels and tires and suspension setups, and i think the b6 stock for stock has a much more solid feel to it. I believe they did some minor changes in the suspension design in the b6 which helped this, but it all comes down to personal preference. in my OPINION, i like the b6 better. others may not agree. forgot to mention i was comparing B5 and B6 both with coilover, and the B5 is just way more responsiveand tighter than B6 the B6 looks very nice but it's just too big and heavy for corning.. more understeer on B6. weight is always enermy. BTW i have KW v-3 coilover, you may want to try that too,i think it will be a better choice if your B6 is a daily driver. and YES.. stock to stock the B6 has a better chasis and suspension, but for potential wise i don't really go along with you.
just my own opinion..and experience

I was "on the fence" with an '03 Passat or a 99.5 A4.

The Passat was Bulbous, Fat, Rotund, Overweight looking and a lot less car for the $$ even though it was a late model.
You get a lot more features with an A4, although it is smaller and older.

If I wanted I could have bought 2 b5s for what I've spent in total on my car. The b6 s4 is the best of all things audi has done imho. Hmm now that I think of it... Too bad they never developed a b6 rs4 variant in either form. I do give a slight edge to the b7 s-line avant. Winner in my book and I've had 3 b5 s4, 2 b6 s4, 2 b7 a4 and rs4. B7 A4's are more aerodynamic, much like going back to the B5.
B8 A4's are just plain gross, the front bumpers suck and is almost as big an A6.
In my opinon, the B5 chassis is hands down the best. Simplified technology (at least to me), minimized "over engineering", sleek lines and best all around performance.

Woooahhh, you're stepping over the line there buddy[:p]. But it is your opinion.
I myself don't see why people have such disgust for the B6. I do agree, the USP bumper makes it look so much better. But color combo and the way the owner would accessorise it would also play a major role. Wheels make a world of a difference when it comes to any car. I am rather stuck on the b5 and would def consider a B6. Why? Soon they will be the price of B5s[drive]. And a B5 may become harder and harder to find is good condition.

I personally think each platform will provide an owner with different characteristics. B5 I think is more of the sport base, B6 more crusier based, and the newer models (B7 and B8), are a mix of trying to be "eye" candy, with long rolling body lines and the interior gadgets.
I personally prefer the look and feel of the B5, but to each their own.

I didn't read all the way through. But if you think the B6 is too big and far from a sporty car, the newest A4 looks like the size of an A6, if Audi didn't have the A3 I would say they lost the closest thing to the original A4's.

Depends what combo we're talking about...
Ive driven pretty much every combo, 1.8t 5 and 6 speed and TIP, 3.0 6 speed and TIP. Maybe its the weight, maybe its the way the car drives or feels, but the 1.8t doesn't seem to make sense; its just too bulky of a car.
The v6, however, seems more proper. Its down on power from a modded 1.8t but just felt (to me) so much more....solid? (I guess is the word) A smoother engine for a smoother car. It just suites the car better, IMO.

There is no comparison in terms of refinement between the b5 vs b6/7/8. I'd pick a B5 for the track, simply because it can be had for cheap. But for a daily driver? No way. But then again I"m quite biased.

I have drove both. I like the B5 better because it is smaller.
