View Full Version : Stuck on VMR Vent Boost Gauge installation| Vacuum through end cap?

Hello all,

So today I received a replacement boost gauge from VMR and I got all excited and happy to get it installed no matter what time so after class i went straight to it.

I figured out the electrical bits and got the gauge to light up, then i connected the vacuum tubing and routed it into the engine bay somehow.

Now here comes the problems:
From what VMR sent me I'm left with these:

Filter i have an idea what to do, t-fitting, and that other piece???

First: I made a little hole in the rubber thingy where i routed the vacuum tubing. Its being a big big pain to get back in.

Now the biggest problem.
I took off the rubber ending on this part

Before i go on: What is the T-fitting needed for anyway?
AND
This is where the t-fitting provided to me doesnt fit in inside because its too damn small, and the rubber nipple doesnt fit the t-fitting. I managed to push the vacuum tubing inside the hole where the t-fitting was and get a readout on the gauge so I knew it worked.

So what the crap do i do?[headbang]

Do i need the t-fitting on?
If so, do i get a bigger one from like autozone, pepboys or something?
My car is stock except for full exhaust + chip.

Help!

i dont have one but from what i understand the T fitting keeps your gauge from buzzing or vibrating..no experience with this but im pretty sure you should have it on. there are DIY's on here if you search around a little bit im sure youll find one...GL!

I didn't put the T-fitting on...and I got no problems.

put the filter on your vac line anywhere in between where you connected it to the engine and your boost gauge, it will stop needle jumping, and stops buzzing.. its not necessary, but i don't think they'd include it just for fun..

ill take a picture of how mine looks, even though i have a b5, the setup is still the same within the engine. and the grommet is supposed to go inside the hole that you cut from your car so that the vac line, and the electrical wires don't get all cut up over time..

about the buzz filter IM NOT SURE SO dont cut the hose yet, just work on getting the connections right, then worry about that huge white they they gave u

dont look at a pic from a b5 itll jus confuse you

yes, u need a t fitting or else itll vibrate like crazy

The t fitting is only for 1.8t's, I think because you have to run a tube to the DV also to keep it functioning. Our DV's are electronic, so you don't need the T fitting. Hope this helps.

So i just pretty much shove the vacuum tube inside where the cap was?

I hope i dont need that cap cuz i just lost it when driving lol

in my pic, the silicon tube goes OVER the hole u found, and OVER the t-fitting

should be a very tight fit

The cap you pull off, you don't need, but you should have a fitting to plug into that, then run the tube straight to your gauge. There should be no other connections in between.

I cut the tube right after it went out from inside of the car and put that filter thing on. Maybe i didnt put it on tight enough or something else is wrong because it still buzzes.

SO i need a silicone fitting? I can just get it from like autozone or something right?

My gauge from PODI came with a t fitting, but specified that you only need it on a 1.8t engine
I guess they provided it incase i put it on a 1.8t.

I have the gague, and my T fitting looks different than yours... I installed mine like picture above, but the T fitting had a larger straight piece that the large silicon hose fit around, then the end cap went on the other end...

The hose to the gauge went on the smaller perpendicular part of the T... Filter I placed in the middle somewhere, under my dash actually...

The instructions were pretty straight forward, I am guessing you got the wrong gauge kit... I would call them and ask for some help.

They are pretty helpful.

Maybe you should've gone with Podi, they were a lot more thorough with their package and instructions. Unless the tube fits right over the fitting coming out of the engine, you should have something that looks like this that attaches the tube to the engine.http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/IMG_2639.jpg

Maybe thats why it still buzzes because i dont have the right fitting.

They might have something similar, but it seems to be a very specific piece that they may not carry. You might even have to buy a cheap gauge kit to get a piece like that out of it.

As long as I have find it somewhere. Gauge kit shouldnt be too much.

i have the kit but did not need the t-fitting cuz the rubber piece they included that goes where you remove the rubber nipple had a fat end to connect to the car and a skinny end just like the end of a t fitting to slip on the vacuum tubing. you are missing a piece

Ok, guess I gotta get one of those silicone t-fittings. Currently i just stuck the vacuum tube into the hole where the end cap used to be, since I lost the cap somewhere lol

Unfortunately you won't be able to find that silicone t-fitting anywhere as I had them custom made for me for 2.0FSI customers.

You can purchase it on the podi.ca website if you need it and it comes with the anti-buzz restrictor I also designed.

Cheap is good. But that's how you run into these issues with missing pieces, and missing instructions. Good luck though. Seriously, I would just buy the fitting you need from Winston@podi

You know i was just thinking. There is no real need for a T-Fitting the way I see it and from what has been said.
I went out to strauss and bought a pack of 3 of vacuum end caps (3/8th in size). They are a tight fit but hold under boost and then an idea hit me.

Why not make a small enough hole and feed the vacuum tube through there??

How does that sound?

What might work as well, you might be able to find in the garden section of Home Depot. they have all kinds of connections for little hoses for like drip systems. Little fitting like this crappy mspaint drawing(im at work)http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/untitled28.JPG

That tube you show is just regular vacuum tubing with two ends open right?

The thing is though. The opening where the cap was and the opening of the vacuum tubing are two completely different sizes which is what worries me. If i get a big tubing and fitting then the vacuum tubing wont be able to go on :/

Yea except the T-fitting would need to have the bottom part much smaller than the other two for it to work since my vacuum tubing is not that bigg.

If that is all you are left with and the gauge works:

Splice the hose where you fed it into the engine from the firewall. Put one end onto each side of the filter. I have my filter sitting next to my ECU. Make sure the arrow is facing the back of the car. Other than that looks all good to me.

Ghost edit: You don't need the t-fitting. Just the long hose, the white fitting that goes into the intake manifold, filter.

No disrespect to Podi.ca as I am currently using their pod but this was my solution before they had their 2.0T fitting solution or gauge packages.

The silicone t-fitting was designed to provide an elegant plug and play solution.

Hi Peter, I looked into this a bit more for you, unfortunately, when you bought the gauge used, the previous owner did not include many of the items that we usually include with the vent kit. It also sounded like the gauge you received had some issues, we were sympathetic to your situation and replaced the gauge and threw in some of the hardware that you needed.

Unfortunately, for our universal gauge only kits, we do not include any car specific hardware, which would come with the whole vent kit. For your B7, you would need a reducer that would mate the vacuum line to the bigger outlet. Go ahead and shoot me a PM and we can figure out what else you need to get it up and running.

I greatly appreciate it. It came as a shock to me that you guys let me use the hardware and it also made my life that much easier. The vacuum line is the only one i need to figure out and I have a few ideas in mind so no worries. I will be sending the other one back as soon as i can.
