Transmission Replacement

I have a question: I have 2.8 type of engine in my A4, and the transmission needs to be replace. Can I change the transmission with another transmission from a 2.8 engine, or do I need to have specific type of transmission?
I heard about that the transmission need some kind of code?
Can someone help me with this problem.

You should be okay as I think all of the 2.8 transmissions have the same final drive.

I've also run across a brand new 2.8 transmission in Europe if your inclined to go new.
