well i finally got some pics idk how the quality is my camera was broke so i used my phone. right now its running and drivable(used a 5 gal gas can to take it around the block had to remove the fuel tank and am building a custom fuel cell ) still has some minor kinks to get worked out, like the radiator and cooling fan its not stayin cool enough. i took out the 1.8 and put in a 5.7, its a 1979 350 with a 4 bolt main bottem end is stock, has worked heads, edelbrock cam, edelbrock torker II intake mani, edelbrock 650 4 barrel carb, comp cams roller rocker arms, custom made headers and modified oil pan. had to make a custom crossmember and tranny mount, driveshaft, relocated battery to fit distributor, pushed the firewall in a little, custom gauge cluster, and a whole bunch of other stuff ill post some more pics probly tomarrow.

I like it. Are you just RWD or are you using the AWD. I remember awhile back seeing an adapter to use the AWD. Good luck.

Dont care to much for this. It would be awesome if you kept it AWD. I believe there are LS1 adaptor plates for the audi trans. So having crap load of torque plus AWD would be insane.

It will hold up fine I'm sure. I mean most of the torque goes to the rear on a launch anyways and they have been holding up for high hp for quite some time.

i'm loving it. i was thinking a rotary engine in the b5 to get rid of the understeer but i don't have the funds or fabbing skills. maybe you should do that next lol. why don't you relocate the battery to the trunk? it'd give you a bit of room for a fuel cell

i was going to but didnt feel like running the cables all the up to the front, i had to do that with my first car, i had a 2000 subaru impreza 2.5rs that i fabbed up a custom turbo kit for and i had alot of voltage problems i was losing it because of the distance, and i had room to fit it under the hood, so i figured it be easier, and i didnt want to have any voltage problems because i still have all the interior goodies it came with, like the heated seats,a/c,etc.

yea it is a little redneck, i was waiting for someone to say something along those line lol
It would be awesome if you kept it AWD.
I agree it would be better with AWD but regardless, it's still awesome.

Tq is 50/50 on a launch, this is why the modified torsens dont make any difference when launching. Plush when launching the front wheels are pulling the car forward which means they are reducing the load on the rears. I dont see the tiny rear axles lasting all that long when trying to get enough traction to move the car forward under high load.

I like this conversion - the fact that the block has no relationship whatsoever with VAG makes it all the more unique and appealing. [cool]
That's going to sound really rumbly, just the way a traditional V8 should - modern V8 motors are too refined. [up]

I found a LS1 to audi trans kit The complete kit is $1350. That includes the adapter plate, custom flywheel, clutch parts, starter, and bolts.. Not a bad deal, thinking of doing this swap in my 90q but i dont think there is enough room.

i dont see how it would fit with the kit, because if the stock audi tranny sits forward alot more than where i mounted the chevy tranny, the tranny is set under the steering assembley, i even had to move the radiator forward and im still having clearance issues, i can see someone doing it to a bigger audi like an a8 because im sure they have more room under the hood,

honestly i couldnt tell ya i mean it might be cheaper but the labor is probly 10 times worse, i mean everything had to be made to fit i couldnt go out and by a driveshaft or mounts, so i guess what i saved on the motor and stuff, i made up for in getting my ass kicked by the progect, ill have to barrow my girlfriends camera and get some detailed shots from like underneat and everything

im actually waitin on a bigger radiator i found a v6 radiator sitten in a junkyard so i grabbed that for now but im waitin on an alumanium radiator, i forgot the exact messurments but i thinks its 26 1/2 W x 17 H x 2 D and i have to get either a 18 inch cooling fan or like 12 inch fans, not dure which won yet, and yea stock cv joints, i look at it this way if somethings doesnt hold up it just gives me an excuse to upgrade.
Siena
08-25-2009, 06:58 AM
I'd say 2 x 12" cooling fans.
The B5 radiator is 25" between the end tanks.
blackedoutb5
08-25-2009, 07:10 AM
i was also thinking to 12's (wow sounds like im 16 again talking subs) but anyway yea and the b5 radiator is only around an inch thick, which is absolutely nothing, the only issue in gonna have is right now i only have about 3/8 of an in between the radiator and the water pump and about 3/8 from the radiator to the grill, because chevy motors have a stupid water pump sticking about 5 inches out from the front of the block, and i looked at electric water (mostly used for drag racing) pumps but there electric motors are still about the same size, and yes chevy did made a short and long water pump for these motors but the short one is only 1/2 inch shorter and i already have it on there, i already have the bumper modified to allow alot more airflow. like i said to i only took it around the block for now so i never really had any air really flowing thru it, so will see what happens when i get the fans
andyrew
08-25-2009, 07:44 AM
2ea 12's would be a good solution. Program one to run all either at 160 or all the time and then the other to kick on at 190 or 200 (Depending on where you want the engine to run)
You might have to go with pusher fans (Unfortunately less efficient) due to the space you have before the engine.
If you run pullers, try and either get a shroud or make a shroud, it really helps
You need to look at alternative rear ends/cv's very shortly. All that TQ is going to KILL your cv's. Seriously man. I'd hate for you to have to go live axle with this setup...

The 914's have the same issue seeing that they have very little room back there, pretty sure my friend runs an electric water pump on his 914.
andyrew
08-25-2009, 09:45 AM
914's have a couple of options,
They either run a side mount water pump w/ a belt, or an electric. The most common is the side mount. The electric pumps are remote. You run a couple of 90 deg fittings off the block and plumb the water pump wherever you want.

That must shift hard. My turbo 350 in my Chevelle has a 2500 stall converter and a fully built valve body. The tires chirp like mad at part throttle when it shifts into 2nd. So much fun to drive.

i barrowed a digital camera from my girlfriend and took a few more pics nothin great yet,
also we finished up the fuel tank and everything, i have a fan rigged onto the front of the radiator and no bumper on or anything like that, me and my father took it for a beatdown mission, and we blew third gear so, so i need a new tranny(turbo 350 are cheaper to pick up another one than rebuild this one, so ill see what i can find, if i can find a 700r tranny id rather there there 4 speed o/d rather than a turbo 350 which is a 3 speed o/d, i also ordered 2 12 inch cooling fans
the hole i had to cut for the distributor

What year is your car? And is it a facelift model?
Solaris

Cool. I like the 5.7 badge. Things may have changed since I was really into all of this, but I think 200R4s are a bit cheaper and a little more common than 700R4s, since it was in a lot of 80s cars. I had a Goodwrench 350 making around 325HP in my Monte Carlo SS many years ago with the stock 200 trans and it took a lot of beatings.
Sorry if I missed your mention of it. How much power are you expecting out of this engine?
blackedoutb5
08-28-2009, 07:23 AM
yes its a facelift model, it's a 99.5
brilliant black outside black leather on the inside, did have black axis spider rims, until i split one in half by hitting a pothole
this car is pretty much like a father-son project, me being 20 i know more about newer motors and my father being he's 51 he knows alot more about old school carb'd motors, and he's asumming a little under 400hp,
the specs:
5.7 350
4 bolt main
edelbrock torker II intake mani
edelbrock cam (dont remember size of the top of my head)
worked heads-3 angle valve job, polished, stronger valve springs, new valves
( i bought them off a guy who races pro street modified class at pocono raceway and does the machine work for i think its the richard petty driving experence)
comp cam roller rocker arms
edelbrock lifters and push rods
summit racing gear drive
custom headers
electric fuel pump
since this project has bled me dry of money because im a full time college student and not working right now, i financed it by selling parts i have laying around and some help from my parents, so once i get the cash im putting in an msd distributor, holley 750 double pumper carb, posibble a more radical cam, but what i really want to do is build a 383 stroker, bore it out .030 over, and bigger valves
by then i hope to have the rear upgraded

I admire the effort, but holy crappy welds batman! I wouldn't trust that engine cradle for the life of me. And did you get the tank pressure tested anywhere?
Im not trying to hate, but seriously the gas tank scares me. Even if it is peachy why not clean up the welds. I mean it seems you did a lot of work and then just gave up. It could be really really clean, little grinder time and a few cans of rattle.

the cleaning the welds and everyhting is all coming up, i wanted to get all the bulk work out of the way first, i'd never put it in a show or anything with them in that condition, and yes the tank was all tested and everything, its not the first one we put together, nothings finalized yet and believe it or not the motor mount support we fabbed up is stronger than the audi crossmember, u can jack it up on it and it doesnt flex at all, u do it to the audi crossmember and its flexing like a mother f'r

As stated I do really like it, heck id do it. Guess im a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to things of that nature I take a lot of time with my welding.

I found a LS1 to audi trans kit The complete kit is $1350. That includes the adapter plate, custom flywheel, clutch parts, starter, and bolts.. Not a bad deal, thinking of doing this swap in my 90q but i dont think there is enough room.
Is that for the 01E tranny, and where did you find it?

its been a while since i posted anything... well she's almost done.
heres a little update
swapped out the turbo 350 tranny for a 200r4, i like it better cuz its a 4 speed auto instead of a 3
fixed all the cooling issues, got my 12 inch fans, everything keeps cool now.
fixed the minor oil leaks
all thats left,
i need a distributor cap and new sparks plugs, accel makes a set that is 3/8 of an inch shorter than stock plugs, i keep burning through wires on the headers, i should be gettin that tomarrow
then i need an inspection, lol, its gonna be a lil tough
heres a little teaser, she's not quiet done yet

10-23-2009, 02:39 AM
Nope, I haven't heard of anyone else doing this swap either.
Will be worth all the hard work, once you can actually start driving her!
Just one thing - how do you pass inspection? Does having carburretors on a moder car, that was fuel injected make things tougher? That's the only thing I'd have done differently - gone fuel injected.
blackedoutb5
10-23-2009, 09:22 AM
the only way ill pass inspection, is if the hood isnt opened lol, luckily my dad knows a few people with their own garages, who will do it

10-25-2009, 09:12 AM
well i took her out last night, got her inspected lol, that was fun. But i have 3 things left to finish up, need a need drive shaft, right now im runnin almost like the stock audi one and the carrier bearing is shot so its shakes, the exhaust has to get tucked up under the car more its way to low, and now that its inspected im gonna punch the cat out so its hollow and get a little more rumble out of it.

not exactly my cup of tea, but i definitely respect it because you deserve respect for doing it. i don't even really miss the Quattro here. about the only criticism, i'd offer would be the fuel injection argument which has already been mentioned.
all in all, i think it's very nice. i can't wait to see it in action. can't remember if you mentioned it or not, but what did you do for an exhaust system?
blackedoutb5
11-16-2009, 08:33 PM
just a little update, sorry no video yet
well within the time i had it out(just the inspection and a little drive here and there) fried the rear
got a bmw 7 series rear, made some brakets and put that in, still holdin together
tucked the exhaust up more now i have about 2 1/2 inches of clearence there, but the roads suck in Pa so it scraped every now and then
had her out today, got almost everything working accuratly, just need to adjust the tv cable, car shifts way to quick, thats on tomarrows agenda
then a lil bit more fine tuning and then a video

Well since theres been a break in the weather, I've been doing some finally tuning of the carb and what not... and a few beat down runs, finally going balls out, few nice burnouts, it was fun... and all of a sudden it started burning oil instead of gas, I actually broke a "few" piston rings. But right now its being rebuilt, everythings been cut and cleaned and honed.. all im waiting on is a gasket kit which will be here monday then ill be back in and running hopefully mid next week and yes i finally will then put a Long awaited VIDEO up... also just a little parts update, i just got a holley fuel pres. reg.
