Hey all,
Not sure who is over at Audiworld but I have been posting about my saga with my new S4 over there. Just signed up over here today and hope someone can give me some insight into my car problems.

Car is now less than 2 months old. About 2 weeks after I took deliver the CEL went on. Scanned it and got code 2181: engine coolant performance. Bring it to the dealer and they say it is a bad sensor, change sensor, send me on my way. 2 days later back on, bring in, now they said the computer had some coolant pump turned off, they turned it on, send me on my way. Comes back on the next day, bring in, changed the thermostat, send me on my way. Same day light comes back on, go to dealer and tech line wants them to free frame the computer and fax them the findings. Do that they say they will call me when tech line calls back. Get a call, come in tomorrow and we need to change the mass air sensor. do it and 24 hours later the light is back on.
I have made 6 trips to the dealer for the code going off 5 seperate times and not making any headway.
I called AOA and opened a case. Just to cover myself incase I have to lemon.
Now after the mass air change they won't take my car in because they say they do not know what is wrong so what is the point of vbringing it in. I call there 2 days ago and the manager says an engineer from Germany is here and he will review the file with him and give me a call the next day. Now they want me to come in so I can take them for a test drive and let them scan the computer when I am going 50 to 60 mph.
Anyone Know what code 2181 is caused by?

Thanks

That sucks. I hope it gets fixed. I don't know what the code represents.

sorry bro. don't know what that code means, but i think we had gotten something similar (if not the same code) due to an intermittent coolant sensor. they found it at our 5k service appt and checked and cleared everything. to my knowledge, nothing was changed, but we haven't seen that coolant indicator flash on our dash yet (knock on woodgrain trim).

good luck with yours! sounds like they should get you a new car though- 6 times with the same error code doesn't sound good. if they do fix it, make sure they give you a free extended warranty for 7 yrs/100k miles or something like that.

Hey guys just checking in to give you an update.

after 9 trips the dealer had the engineers from germany come to look at the car. They change a hose in the coolant system, picked up the car, and less than 40 miles from the dealer my engine blew.
CEL came on, started flashing, misfiring, shaking, not accelrating,etc....

So I am just full of hapiness right now[:D]

well 10 trips total

after the mass air, they made me come in and drive a tech around at 50 mph to scan the car. they did nothing with that. They finally make an appointment to have the engineers come down from Germany. I have been posting and researching my issues and found 2 people on audiworld witht he same code. found out the part# their dealer changed, called my service manager to tell him, he sounds excited as he may finally have me out of his hair so I thought. That was last friday. Mondy morning i call him and he tells me the part# is back ordered for weeks from Germany. THE NEXT DAY the engineers come down and work on my car. The change a part and some random service rep calls me to give me an update (i have only been dealing witht he manager for the last few weeks) I ask him the part number, ask him if they had to order it or if it was in stock. He gave me the same part # i gave the manager that was in stock that the manager told me was on back order.
Go in next day at 8 am to pick up car. I always inspect the car inside and out with a manifiying glass when i pick up my car. all good except the motor was covered in little white spots from dried coolant. the part they changed was a hose in the coolant system. I drive to work about 20 -30 miles. park it, 10 hours later I get in the car to drive home, about 10 miles from work the CEL comes back on, starts flashing, misfiring, shaking, will not accelerate,etc.... I scan it code 300,302,303, 352 all misfire codes.

The next day it takes 6 calls to get the service manager on the phone(only took call after I told them I would not hang up until he gets on the phone). Tells me there is coolant in cylinder 2 and 3 and my engine is shot.

on another note, i am weighing in my options for a new car. The GTI has always been a favorite of mine. How do you liek the r32. and do you knwo if they make and supercharger or turbo kits for that?

i'm glad you asked...[:D] i love the R32...it's a great daily driver that's fun to drive. There are a handful of manufacturers making hop ups for the R32. VF engineering has the SC up to Stage 2 now they are supposed to have Stage 3 soon.

HPA as you know does their turbo kits all be it expensive. Then there's EIP that looks promising w/ a single turbo kit as well as a bi-turbo setup that's craziness. There's another one that i forgot...

and all these kits produce hp ratings like no other...you could in theory put/inflict some hurt on people spending twice as much if not more on their car...all that coming out of a lowly Golf [;)] it's a great sleeper

found this over on Vortex:

* Exhaust flapper mod (10lb-ft of torque at low revs, and 10+hp gain in 1st and 2nd gear at all revs and +5hp at high speeds/high revs. Seems it's never fully deactived by ECU .)

halflife- we had the 2181 code- they changed the thermostat, thermostat housing, and now they are going for the temp. sensor.

The part that is supposed to fix the problem is a hose with a "check valve" going from the radiator to the auxillary radiator

i'll let them know to look at that hose if the CEL comes on again. i hope aoa takes care of you properly.
