View Full Version : Anybody want stronger gears???

A friend worked for decades running a shop called Gear Research here in Grand Rapids. He did everything from stock to drag cars to big rigs and know what it takes to make a gear that can take the shock without cracking or breaking and how to treat them to reduce friction, noise, and wear. He bought a machine shop in Muskegon a year ago and their work load has really slowed down. He asked if I had any ideas and immediately told him about the broken gears from the Audizine member's drag cars.

What I need are a few good gears and some that have been broken with a description of conditions when they broke. We're looking at price points around half what the OE gears are available for. Like maybe (guessing) under a grand for a set of three fully treated gears around twice the strength of stock. I can't have them made without parts to study and reverse engineer.

If you guys that are breaking gears want stronger options then send me some of those chunked up paperweights and I'll get them to Sig. He has a friend that has a $150k gear analyzer and a slow shop. We'll research how they made them and why they did it that way, the gear patterns, the ratios, the metallurgy, and everything else pertinent and get quotes for just what ratios you guys need.

This is not an advertising post since there are no products to sell. We're just looking to start some research in an effort to help you get down the track quicker with much greater peace of mind.

He should look into doing work for these cars:

08+ GTR trans ($20k part)
03+ Evo - Trans is stout, but people break T-cases all the time
89-99 DSM - Tranny has always been a weak point in these cars. the closest solution aside from re-builds (john shepard and TRE) is a dog-cut gear set by magnus motorsports.
89-97 3000gt - 3800lb car + launching = shredded trannys. Many shops stopped working on them because getrag stopped supplying replacement parts.

The GTR would be the first thing I'd focus on...those guys obviously have money to play with, and the issue isn't going away... With the mitsus, you'd expect to make your $ back from volume.

Fooook. I'm so in.

Ever since I paid to have my tranny rebuilt, I drive the car like it was made of glass. I'm terrified of shifting remotely aggressively.

Bringing this thread back to life..

The company I deal with to make the 01E internals i market is willing to do the engineering for any other transmissions. If there's enough interest (and market) they can make something for the 01A, 01x, and 0A3 boxes.

Lookin for some info here - maybe someone has some insight...

1- I'd love to get gears made
2- I'd like to either gear my 5spd to 4.11 or swap to one geared this way.. Can someone do that with our transmissions?
3- if at all possible i'd like to keep my 5spd since I won't have to get a new shifter or front axles or drive shaft if I can just swap sets and the rear end...

Any help is appreciated

We can install a 4.11 ring and pinion into an 01A gearbox.

Did you get a price for the new gear sets?

Great things to come I just invested a small fortune in gear manufacturing equipment.. hint hint hint...
