View Full Version : Leaning toward CSL type wheel, but can't find anything comparable

The buy I worked with had this wheel on his M3, it is the wheel they put on the M3 CSL. It looks even better in person! Problem is that I kind find any wheel that looks comparable.

Notice how the spokes start in and go out to the very end of the lip.

Any thoughts?

take a look at the HRE 840 line, I know there is one in there that looks the same, the 840R I think. The HRE is an awesome 3-piece wheel, I think it has more lip than what you see in your pic, but that makes the wheel look even better IMO. they look awesome in person too. I've been dreaming about a set ever since I picked up my S4, but the price is just outrageous...

other than that I think ENKEI has one thats similar but it may have rivets...its hard to find that clean look these days...

Yeah, the 840's are definitely a big ticket. The thing that I really like about the CSL wheels that I still haven't seen on many other wheels is the way thay start in deep and the spokes come out all the way to the lip. The 840's start in and they attach inside the lip leaving a large lip. Look at the back wheel on the CSL and you can see what I am talking about better--it just makes the spokes look longer and the wheels just look clean!

Agreed, but I think they only make that wheel in 17".

Ok, so apparently they make a bright silver painted 18" forged--I really wanted brushed and 19"

I'm about to give up on this wheel thing! Ok, what do you guys think of this wheel (very similar to the Sportec wheel, but better)?

Are you the same Shep from roadfly.org?

Did you have some part in the making of the CSL replica wheels that a roadfly member produces and sells? I wish someone in the Audi community would take on a similar task. The wheels produced (from what I saw) were very high quality and if a similar process was used to make a nice Audi rim, and it had a decent design, I would definately be in for buying a set.

Something similar to a Sportec design, or Oettinger RE, 19" and a lip I think would be perfect for the b6 body.

No, I was on Roadfly for a while when I had my M3 (only for a couple of months though), but I'm not that "Shep"--that's Ralph and he designed the wheels through/with the help of Champion Motorsports.

Champion Motorsports (http://www.championmotorsport.com/audi/audimenu.htm)

1 of their 2 S4 wheel options I posted above--that is the one I am leaning toward, which is very similar to the Sportec Mono/10, but way better quality. Yes, they also designed the CSL type wheel (but Champion's is of better quality).

I just called to get more info on the wheels...I will post details soon.

Ok, talked to Champion and they no longer sell that wheel. They said that we could build our own wheel (similar to what Ralph did for the CSL) if we wanted to. I am going to make another post about this (I will start it on the S4 board because the S4 owners are probably the ones that would want something this expensive, but I'm sure it will get moved so look for it if you have an interest).

High-level: We provide a type of wheel that we want designed. We pay $3,000-$5,000 up front for tooling and guarantee the sale of 10 sets of wheels. They will design and test the wheel and give us an estimate on price per wheel--these are bad ass 1-piece spread forged wheels that weigh 18-20 lbs and would cost anywhere between $1,100-$1,500/wheel.

Again for those of you familiar with Champion's CSL type wheel, this is basically what Ralph did--he had the 1st group (40 wheels) pre-sold before production and they are on their 3rd group of production.

Any interest?

Thats good news. I think if we get someone creative to design a couple different versions of a possible wheel then we would see a lot more interest.

Shep, you may want to try posting this on www.audiworld.com. Audizine is a great board (my favorite Audi board actually) but audiworld gets a lot more volume so this could generate a bigger interest to take on such a project.

If the rim is around $1,000, has a nice design (19" and a lip) and is of very high quality I think there would be at least 10 people that are interested.

Has anyone heard of Hartmann Wheels? In my neverending quest to find a CSL type wheel I ran across these. Apparently they should have one to fit the S4 in February--one piece forged. Most of there wheels look to be around 280-325/wheel, which is a little concerning, but the wheels look very clean! Again, anyone know anything about these guys?

Yeah, the RC, but they don't make anymore in 19's for to fit the S4.

TxShepS4, I own a wheel manufacturing/importing company here in Socal and we just finished the tooling/prototyping the CSL replica wheel for the BMW 3-series.

Fortunately for the Audi guys, the BMW wheels have the same offset and width as the A4's wheels. The only difference is the bolt pattern and centerbore, but those are drilled out after the wheel is casted out.

I didn't order any of these wheels for the B6 because I didn't wnat to take the risk, but if we can GB 25 sets I can sell em for $700 for full set.

Here is the CAD drawing of our CSL wheel:

I think some BMW wheels look better on Audis than anything else, for example the Hartge classic wheels. I was going to purchase 10 sets for the B6 but I couldn't fit it into the production schedule.

BTW I have pics of the csl replica that was popped out of our tooling last week:

What is the composition of the wheel? Will it fit the S4 and A4? What is the sizing? 19x8.5?
