I was thinking about getting a 2001 S4, but everyone is telling me to get a M3. I was wonder what would be better for mod-ability in Ontario. I've always liked the S4, but recently I've been itching for a manual with some decent power and handling as I've been driving a 1994 MB E320 for the last year and I want to make the right decision. The MB is great for carrying people but after Mississauga Mercedes screwed it up it handles like crap. I'm going to test the M3 tomorrow and the S4 on Thursday.
I appreciate any opinions you guys have.

is it a e46 m3 or e36 m3?
if its e46, I'll tell you to take that instead of an S4.
I have one at home and it rocks....(although its my brothers)[:D]

But i still like the potenial of the S4

did the 01 S4 come with the 2.7T or the 4.2 V8?

2.7T. Very capable engine. If you buy used, just make sure you get the entire car looked at, and get the full service history.
The new S4 has the 4.2 V8... wonderful sound.
The S4 has much more modding potential than an M3, and can easily be a faster car (mine already is)
But it will NEVER look like, or get the attention of an M3
The M3 will NEVER handle like, be as safe, or as practical as the S4.
In a few years, I'd love to own both....they compliment, not replace each other.

Good choice, I just went from a 1999 A4 1.8T to a 2001.5 S4.

Keep in touch with us on this forum and audiworld to start modding your car.
ABSOLUTE necessities for your car are:
1) Chip (and 710N bypass valves) go APR, GIAC, AMS or MTM
2) Short Shifter (get a Toyguy, mine is in the mail)
3) Suspension (bilstein shocks or coilovers depending on $$$)
4) RS4 Grill

B5 S4, Easy to mod, fast, easy to drive ( track or daily drive) inc "WINTER" (need snow tires). Insurance is cheaper then the M3.
Get the S4 but have to be 2001.5 with ESP and No "F" hose design under the hood.

Thanks guys. The car is going to be kept stck for a while. Maybe only coilovers to get it a bit lower. Well I have to drive the car a good 150km from the dealer is there anything i could use to protect it from stones?

I probably would have gotten an E46, but the dealers were so bloody rude that I didn't even wanna look at the car anymore. I guess I look too young and they thought i was some punk kid wanting to drive around a M3.

Nothing is going to happen in 150km. If you're *that* worried, tape up the front with painters tape from 3M (blue stuff).

don't beafraid to drive a car.... thats the whole reason for owning an S4. If you drive 80km a day to work and back on the 401 you will probably get stone chips... other than that i wouldn't even give it a thought. Drive it like it was meant to be driven, hard. Have fun with it.

Thanks for the info. I'm just going to drive it home, and stay away from the trucks. One more question:
I just talk to the dealer about some winter tires. 1800$ for aluminum 16" 9 spoke rims with winter tire. I'm not sure of the tire as yet, he will email me tomorrow. Do you think that is a good deal? Or should i get my own?

Get your own, that's a rip. I found 17" winter tires, brand new, for $500+tx. Throw them on your stock wheels, and get a set of nice summer wheels in the spring.

i was going to do that, but the dealer just put a fresh set of rubber on the car. So i thought it would be better to get another set and run on the stock for a while.

BMW look horrible I hate the never chaning styling unless you going to polatizo every weekend with the rest of the gino's don't get one they are just like assholes everyone has one horrible car trust me you will get much more respect with a S4 with a set of K04 turbo's on it

Buddy, shut the **** up! That's a very narrow minded post. I know lots of poeple that drive BMW and they're not pricks. Maybe you're talking about those losers that buy a 318 and paint it for $250 to try to make it look like an M3 but you really shoudln't say stuff like that. There's assholes everywhere, don't you think there's more dickheads driving distastefully modded intergras and other rice garbage accords?

I not being narrow minded at all BMW's have never changed there styling since 93 still looks like a box and those lovely dash lights looks the same as my winter beater 90 jetta

I don't know about that... put a new M3 next to a 96 and there is a helluva difference. As for the rest of the lineup, BMW is losing tons of customers because they have changed their designs too much.

sorry man but the lines are way different... the new M3 looks wider, has smoother rolling lines and a lot of styling details not shared by the previous M3 including different shaped headlights, smoother transitions around the corners and from hood to nose, completely different tails and rear deck lid not to mention the side gills and wider fenders. As for taking off the bumpers.... thats like taking a quarter of the car away. People change their bumpers and side skirts all the time to make their car look different so how can you judge a car without its bumpers.... If you have to take pieces off to make it look like the old one than you're only proving that it looks different.
agreed, they're completely different cars in most (all?) respects.
