Well it's sad but i need to get rid of my 2003 evo VIII so i can get a car to drive clients around and start a family. The evo has 46k miles and in excellent condition (if anyone wants to trade something by chance). I am sure Evo's are probably not the most respected cars on an Audi forum.

Anyway... I was looking around and determining values... I was wondering what everyone thinks i could and SHOULD trade the car for (in the ballpark...+- some cash).

My first car was an Audi 5000s LOOOOOL...but we won't talk about that.

My dad got one of the first RS6's in 03, and holy Sh#* i liked that car.

I know i can't get anywhere near the performance of the RS6 but i was thinking maybe a 2004 A6 2.7t S-line, 2004 A6 4.2, or add cash or get lucky and get a 2005 a6 4.2 s-line etc. I know there are trade offs for each. Reliability vs modability etc...

Here's my main question that i keep asking myself and i couldn't quite find on the forums within a couple hours of reading up. I was on some other audi forum and it was lacking in search options.

Ideally i would want to reach 350+ ish hp for either car. What would i have to do on the 4.2 to get there and what on the 2.7t. I understand there are limited things u can do (within reason) on the 4.2 like Cams, chip, exhaust etc. I am huge into reliability, however i have owned a couple turbo cars. I have never had 1 problem on my evo, but i guess that is because of the good maintenance.

Just from what I have seen online...my car prices out similarly to 2004 2.7t s-line's with 60+k miles, so i thought i would have a shot. Any advice will help. Maybe i can only get an audi 5000s....who knows... LOL [wrench]

From the reliability standpoint, overall both cars are the same....CV boots, control arms, small things here and there.

Engine standpoint...The 4.2 is rock solid and the only thing you need to worry about is the tranny. I'll say this as a proud 4.2 owner. It has no potential. You can drop it, wheels, custom exhaust, chip, think about what floor mats you want next, and that is it. Very minimal gains with all that. PES supposedly has a charger coming for it. Claims of 420hp from a regular 4.2, and 480hp from an S6. Neither of which the stock tranny can support. That is something you need to research cause PES has a mucho shitty rep right now, and I would be hard pressed to let them touch my car. That being said It is quick enough stock, but if you want big power its not the way to go.

2.7T is a great piece of clay to have under the hood. Research should tell you that its really hit or miss. Some do tons and never issue one, some do nothing and have tons of issues. The argument about maintenance and reliability with the 2.7t can easily go either way too.

Just some basic things to consider. If you want manual transmission, the only option is 2.7T. If you want the same widebody that the RS6 had, the 4.2/S6 have it.

To answer your main question the 4.2/S6 would be your best route. Just from a reliability standpoint. Not to say that nothing will happen, but the track record is better than the 2.7T. The 4.2 might not get you to your 350 though. If you find an S6, they have 340 stock, but only see minor gains as well once you work on them. Search for a post from last week where the guy dyno'd his S6.

Prices are dropping on the RS6 to mid 20's - lower 30's. Is that an option?

The C6 4.2 has the newer chain driven motor. Same one that is in the B6 S4, allroad, etc. No real potential, but I would rather have that one. The C6 has had a ton of TSB's, which once again you can find info about on here.

thanks for the link...hmm lots of thinking to do...

I really cant afford much more than 20k. I am hoping to upgrade in a couple years once i get established with a good job. I am buying a house right now so i am mainly looking for what i can get for my evo + possibly a couple grand extra. i guess i should maybe lower my expectations. I suppose i don't need to go HP crazy.

i have a 2004 S-line...its a fun car to mod, but since they come in tip only, its a bit jerky around town, so driving clients around might be iffy, but when you get on the highway its all fun....but the 4.2 is awesome also...either way they are great cars, good luck!
