View Full Version : BT B5 QTM, Tial-Garrett GT3076R
Here's a pic of my 1997 B5 QTM
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb224/kntstealth93/photo-167.jpg
Both compressor AND turbine housing are polished which makes the Tial-Garrett GT3076R LOOK like it is about to breathe alot of power into my AEB [cool]
At present I have built an equal length schedule 10 stainless tube header with a 10 degree merge angle into the V-band inlet. the Tial 44mm gate merges off the collector at a 40 degree angle into it's V-band.
Currently working on fuel system, Intercooler, finishing the bodywork (RS4 full body kit) and finishing off the 3" 16ga 304 SS straight exhaust.
more pics to follow...

On deck for orders are Scat rods/bearings/studs/rings/gaskets (more AN fittings/line of course) 034 snubber, and (probably) a Lugtronics VEMS...
My Megasquirt is Officially FS. -PM for details

absolutely identical length, in case I ever want to go twin scroll[cool]
(it's welded up and done now, the rubber bands/pvc were to mock up and fit things)
I AM LOOKING FOR A MACHINE SHOP HERE IN SOUTH FLORIDA, WHICH HAS EXPERIENCE?GOOD REPUTATION FOR WORK ON OUR CARS,

Nice work. Is your exhaust housing dipped or just hand polished?
I have a 10" bench buffer, about a dozen different buffs for it, 10-15 for grinders, close to 50 different bobs, about 100 usable dremel buffs and mini polishing wheels.
I am a polishing nut... even my motor mounts, A/C components, CV axle shields, suspension members are getting the 'wheel[>_>]
you don't see too many polished turbine housings, huh!
My attention is most seriously focused on the front mount and piping, the rest of the exhaust and the fuel system this weekend.
Anyone have any aluminum 2.5" IC pipe bends? I need only ONE more bend... I have a couple 18" straight pipes I could trade, or $, I just need about 15% of circumference from a 45/90 to make a slight bend coming off the IC end tanks. I'm having a bitch of a time clearing the A/C condensor inlets. I ordered some Aeroquip A/C -AN lines/fittings, but I don't know that it will help now that I'm balls deep into the IC setup[headbang]
I'll get a couple pics up here shortly, maybe someone has an idea that will solve today's conundrum
thanks for the props, Don

That turbo looks beautiful!!! For how long u plan on running your car withou upgraded rods?. That was the first thing I did when I started my gt30r build. BTW good to see another BAT b5 a4 here in FL.
right on!
-but, I'm ordering rods/bearings, rings, studs and gaskets this weekend. I'll never even fire it up on the stockers...
My real problem area is with the mistake I made thinking I was going to Megasquirt the car.....
I am talking to Kevin about lugtronic/VEMS. I'd love to go with 034 EMS but can't bear the initial expense. $2k is alot of money for an electronic box... what are you running for engine management?

awesome build! keep the pics coming!

My manifold is only good for about 980hp, so it would be of no use to you unless you were to do away with the iPhone
I'm more than willing and able, but know that I MIG weld my mani's... .035" wire gap, HEAVY root pass with backpurge --grind down high spots----next pass is a tight "stitch" then I grind the welds smooth as you want. My manifold is at my work this weekend, as I have been polishing it with a high speed pnuematic die grinder on lunch breaks. it is looking like a commercially made mandrel bent tube header, as I can't even tell where most of the welds were. There is a LOT of labor in this, and the more raw it is, the less expensive it would be... I'll toss some pics up monday or tuesday... if you're interested, drop me a PM.
now before anybody asks, I have a prototype "mock up" built from PVC, and I also have jigs for THIS particular design, nothing else for our cars... I can pop out copies fairly easily. -anything different is "back to the old drawing board" so to speak -in otherwords mo-fuk'n Xpensif.
thanks for the props guys! Most of you are aware just how much work + $$$ goes into projects like this, and for those of you who don't, let me tell ya... [rolleyes]
the admiration is much appreciated

JK35 how much would you charge for one of those manis if you have them jigged up already?
probably around $1000-$1100, of course if I could do 4-5 at the same time I'm sure I could get that down to $800-$900.
The difficulty is the collector, the materials aren't cheap and the flanges... well, that is what drives the price up there... Tial is VERY proud of their V-band flanges, and you cannot use anything else with a TIAL housing.
-they are however SUPERIOR to any V-band flange I've ever seen... Even HKS's. there is a machined race/lip off the ring that mates with the recess in the mating flanges surface. The fit is soo nice. and absolutely NO warping even after multipass welds

Great build.
That manifold looks great. I'm diggin the V-Band Tial. That DP looks like it needs some love in comparison though.
I'm keeping an eye on this thread.

thats exactly the turbo setup that im setting up now [up] looks sick man! you going with stock displacement?
if you have one of those manifolds available for $800 bucks count me in.
i have a piece of 2.5" 45* aluminum piping if you still need it send me a PM.

a 2.5" 45 will do the trick. Tell ya what though, I build (very expensive) curved staircases for a living. If you're going to shell out $800-$1k on a header, don't you want one from someone that builds them for a living (and has an impeccable reputation for doing so)???
What's this about Kevin? I'm not exactly clear as to what I said or did[confused] I certainly didn't mean for anything like that to happen. Kevin is building my standalone and handling my tuning. I sure as hell didn't mean to say anything that caused any trouble.
What the fuck are they banning him for anyway?

you can see one of 034's coolant port- -6an adapters in the port that is normally "plugged" and my AEM coolant temp sensor in an adapter I milled myself (drill press, hand tapped, router and a dremel... what a PITA!)

the underside of my AEM sensor adapter (it's simply a GM coolant temperature sensor)

and THIS, is the reason my subwoofer enclosure came out and is currently listed in the classifieds... The 20# Nitrous bottle is going between the spare (which sits on top of the surge tank/fuel pump well) -obviously not enough room, so it's been "back to the drawing board (and to the supply house where i buy duragls, bondo, fiberglass/cloth ;) ) the new fiberglass and carbon fiber sub enclosure allows the nitrous bottle to fit, spare still accessable, and actually has MORE airspace, AND it has "racks" (windows) for my signal processors.
The fiberglass enclosure weighed about 16lbs, the new (larger, but "lower profile" ) CF sub enclosure should weigh around 10lbs once it's finished -not incl. the subwoofer of course...

I am looking for pics of anyones audi which has amp racks built into (flush) the backs of the rear seats, as mine either need to go there, or else I'll mave to mount them to the bottom of the rear deck (anyone have any other ideas?)

wow....that car is gonna be scary fast too. is the motor done yet? is it on the car already? whats the status of the car as a whole to come it its first start?
look through the above pics, the motor is in, and it's running surprisingly well off the stock ecu. I am running only 8psi off WG spring pressure for now, but at that, it pulls suprisingly hard. I'm hoping to put another 100 miles or so on it before the changeover to the AEM, just to be sure the rings are seated in completely, and to work out any other bugs I can find. One thing's for certain, I am going to need a clutch VERY soon, probably before it goes on the dyno, or else I'll be wasting alot of time and money and towing a car home from Orlando or Tampa... I threw the Sachs clutch back on for break in, but have been planning on ordering a Clutchmasters twin/flywheel very soon...
On a hard launch at only 8psi, the clutch is already getting slippery (and smells like nothing I can describe... I can only attempt to describe it as a burning wet dead animal smell. it is nauseating!
The AEM is coming along just fine, I am just debating whether to sell my complete engine harness or cannabilize it for all the dust boots, wire protection, tubing. my harness is in GREAT shape, and I imagine it would cost quite a bit more to buy everything I want to use rather than just cannabilizing my existing harness. I have a spare harness that is in the car now which is converted to the types of connectors I'm using with the AEM. that way, I can switch between the AEM and the factory EMS until I'm confident I wwill no longer need the factory computer. -at this point it's more than a crutch, it's how I'm running the car!
used harnesses seem to go for about $70-$100 from what I can tell... does that sound about right?

You can also mount the amps to the underside of the trunk lid. Just fab a panel to make them look flush and use stiffer struts to lift it. I've been considering adding some 8" subs to my hatch. Back in the day I had a shop and did a few Tahoes with 12" subs in the rear cargo doors.
