I am new to the Audi lineup but have been a Honda guy for a long time. I have built a few Honda motors and feel I have a good idea what I am doing when I work on one of them. I just bought a 96 Audi A6 wagon. Its a very nice car that has been well cared for and is in very good condition. It only has one problem. When you go to start the car you have to crank the motor over for 10-15 seconds. That may not sound like much but it feels like forever when you are starting the car. I have a new set of Bosh Platinum 4 spark plugs in the car and it still will not start up the way it should. It will start up right away when its warm but if it sit for a short time(even 2-3 mins) it takes 10-15 secs to start it up again. When it does start there is NO smoke or anything so I don't think it is flooding. I sounds like it is not getting fuel until you crank it for awhile. The car seems to run fine after it starts so I don't think its the fuel pump. Is their a fuel pressure regulator that is not holding the pressure in the fuel rail maybe? I hate to just start replacing parts unless I have an idea that it might cure the problem. Any help you can give me would be great.
Thanks
Tony

What if you turn the key to the "on" position for a few seconds to let the pump cycle then try to start it? Does it still need to turn over more than normal? If it starts normally it could be a fuel pressure/pump problem. I had it happen on my previous car, which turned out be the fuel pressure regulator.

I tried turning the key to the "on" position for a few secs and it still cranks for along time.I tried turning it to "on" and then off and back "on" a few times but it makes no difference.
Where is the fuel pressure regulator?

My 96 A4 has the same problem. I dunno what to say other than I am having the EXACT same problem. But these are cars that work off more than a motor and gas. It could very well be anything. Audi want 99 an hour to check it. I live in Miami so there nuts out here. Im gonna have to pay it though. Lemme know if you figure it out.

I think I am going to have to take this thing in and find out what is wrong with it. Up here in MN its getting cold and I don't want to get stranded with this car when its 20 below zero.[:(]

I think you need new injectors.
But first, replace the fuel filter.
