Well today i installed the whole rear of a quattro B6 A4 into my 2004 audi A4 front trak. Gas tank fit perfectly, all the straps fit, stock speed sensors fit, stock e-brake cables fit. I had to extend the fuel pump harness to go under the seat as the FWD fuel pump is in the trunk. So all i did was fallow the harness and re-ran the harness to go under the seat. No cutting at all... Thats basically it... I found out the quattro shocks are the same as the FWD sport, only difference is the springs at one more dot im guessing a little stiffer cause of the weight. anyways heres the pics.

Depending where you buy. I paid 550 for the whole rear end, 125 for gas tank, 125 for the fuel pump cause the junk yard broke the fitting on it[mad].. I still need the trans and driveshaft and im done. But im going to try something with the stock trans..

I would say maybe 2 times as heavy as the FWD one. I can lift the FWD one with 1 hand, its probably 80lbs. I would say close to 200 maybe less.

You just have the rear speed sensors for ESP and ABS as well as the roll control sensors (on the anti-roll bar).

awesome job man! only 1 question looking at the tranny tail section. do you by any chance have a side by side cut sheet to the tail sections of the tranny.. reason im asking is could there only be a spline connection or is that a differnce in the tranny. maybe you can locate the diffence without having to completely replace or swap them. i couldnt find anything but maybe someone has a tranny rebuild manual.

I know this is the B6 A4 forum but i just had to ask. Sorry for the brief thread jack.
Please Pm me to keep it out of the OP's thread or if he wishes to keep it as more info for others like me or him if he wants to swap a B7 A4 as well..... [:D] [wrench]

I can go through the individual parts tonight, most likely the only difference is the main shaft, however I would venture to say that buying one and installing it will cost more than a junkyard tranny.

yeah, but it was impossible to get a 1.8L, manual, quattro, cab.... the closest thing is the s4 cab - which was a manual quattro, but i'd rather have a 1.8 than a 4.2
audi really sucks sometimes... we never seem to get the combos people want.

i'd like to see the amount of money spent on audis (mods and price of car included, no maintenance) statistic for the members of this forum vs. the rest of the world though..
i bet our .5% would make up a good 15% or so of total $ spent lol (if not more)

that's my point lol. we make up a very small slate of the total owners... probably even smaller than the .5% you guessed -- but im willing to bet that a LOT of the money spent on audi's can be attributed to us.
granted none of the mod money (well... not much of it anyways) will actually go to audi - i think it'd just be a fun statistic to see.

I've done auto to manual swaps on a few Nissan 240sx's and my former FD RX-7. In the case of the 240sx, the driveshaft was the only difference between auto and manual, the IRS was completely the same. In the instance of the FD, the pinion snout was different and needed to be changed in order to use a manual transmission and driveshaft. Typically that is the only difference but on occasion, the actual snout lengths could be different between them as well. I cannot answer these questions for the B6, but at least I hope this info can give you an idea of where to find the answers.
As for swapping an auto car to manual, it isn't very hard outside of collecting the parts. The electrical portion could be complex, I'm not familiar with how Audi designs their wiring and just how modular it is. Nissan used pigtail harnesses which could be swapped without any effort. Mazda had two harnesses for both the interior and engine bay that was specific to the transmission type. Obviously in that case the best approach is to change both harnesses and remove the now unnecessary modules (Trans Control, etc). I didn't opt for that route, instead I removed the unneeded parts and modified my existing harnesses, relocating the signals I needed from the auto trans and shift box to the manual sensors and pedal assemblies.
I'd be interested to help someone do a manual swap in their car, just to see how the Audis are but I don't know of anyone who needs to swap in my area and is willing to shell out for a manual gearbox and parts.
Edit: One thing to note, about auto vs. manual rear differentials is that the gearing is different and thus must be matched up, otherwise damage to the drivetrain will result.

If you can find an ECU for your model year on a TIP trans then I don't see it being a problem.

6 speed is 4.11 and the auto is 4.11 both the same....
Ok How many of you think this will work... If i run the 4.11 rear and a 3.89 2.8 V6 trans.. I calculated the speed for both ratios and came up with
RPM Redline Max MPH at 6500
1st Gear :1 35.99MPH
2nd Gear :1 64.8MPH
3rd Gear :1 96.9MPH
4th Gear :1 133.58MPH
5th Gear :1 159.66MPH
6th Gear :1 0MPH
Final Drive 3.89:1
RPM Redline Max MPH at 6500
1st Gear :1 34.06MPH
2nd Gear :1 61.33MPH
3rd Gear :1 91.71MPH
4th Gear :1 126.43MPH
5th Gear :1 151.11MPH
6th Gear :1 0MPH
Final Drive 4.11:1
So how much difference can the quattro handle between front and rear, at 90mph its 5mph difference from front and rear

You have to weld the center diff otherwise it will send all the power to the front but i dont have any front cv axles lol... The only thing i can think of you might of had to do is weld 2 tabs one on each side like the bently manuel shows in order for the bracket to bolt properly up in place.. Our cars prob don't have the tabs.
P.S. Its my educated guess....lol
vizi
O2VW1.8T
03-28-2009, 03:19 PM
Ok heres what i did. We have 2 tabs but they are in the wrong place. So i drilled out the spot welds and cut the 2 brackets and put them where the driveshaft bolts up. I didn't even weld the 2 brackets. Just 2 bolts each to hold it. Been driving like this for 2000 miles maybe a little less and zero problems. You do have to beat the bracket to mold it to the new shape. But overall its not bad.
See where i circled in red thats where the bracket was and i moved it.

- quattro trans can range from 400-2000 all depends were you get it
- center driveshaft - 150

FYI, a trans from Clint would be closer the lower end of that range. And he's local.

I'd go 6spd since you're doing it.

FANTASTIC JOB!!! FANTASTIC color choice. I'm not a big fan of the headlight film but with your conversion, it looks like it was supposed to have been there the entire time [up]

that only matters when going tip to manual

For going from tip to manual, will the manual crankshaft drop right in and fit where the tip crank once was without changing anyother parts of the engine?

CVT actually has the same crank as a manual so you dont have to touch the bottom end

Wait so the manual tranny would be a direct bolt up without touching anything on the engine

So if I read this correctly... I can take a FWD CVT A4 and make it into a 6spd manual with AWD... If so can you recommend a shop in the So Cal area that can do this project???

That would be a BIG project but yes its possible. If you're doing it at a shop I would give yourself a ~$5000 budget

I would just say F the awd and go for frontrak manual (I may be incorrect in thinking that CVT and Frontrak are different, someone please correct me if I am). Save the rest of the money for a build [up]

Great work man. Glad its holding up for you.
I've been reading up on swaps since my CVT is about shot. Trying to figure out what would be most cost effective behind the 3.0. A manual swap, and stay FWD or an Automatic and go Quattro. Either way the CVT has to go.
