I live in North Jersey (Bergen County) and I was wondering how they test the emissions systems. Is it a sniff test or do they hook something up to the ecu? Thanks.

Basically, they hook up a computer cable to the ECU port inside the car, a sensor to the gas tank cap, run the car through what look like dynos, and do a brake test. Everything is checked including all exterior lights too. The one in Secaucus is pretty good.

so if someone didnt have cats, would they be able to catch it?

yes they look for them with a mirror that goes under the car... its NJ dude think they would really let us have that much freedom with our cars [>_<]

this does not always apply. my cats are not visible. i do not recall them using mirrors either. they simply just plugged into my ECU to check emissions.

people with piggie pipes have used O2 spacers to pass inspection.

They definitely use mirrors to check. The station that I went to last time did not run the emissions test on the dyno. I suspect that this has a lot to do with the fact that my A6 is AWD and would have flown off the rollers. My SHO has always been emissions tested on the rollers though.

how would they use mirrors on the a4 1.8t where the cats are not visable on the bottom of the car..

haha... i think the best shot is to go to a private place and tell them straight up you won't pass emission if they read at the end of your pipes but will pass if its scanned and expect to pay more money. I would be worried if I went to the sate dmv and they saw I had no cat they would not let me drive the vehicle on the road or something.. idk thats me though

haha aight, thanks guys, ill prolly just go to the guy who did it last time for me (my tints arent the most legal thing), and ask him how he does the emissions test and go from there
