Germany’s Wolf Henzler captured his first-career SCCA SPEED GT pole today in preparation for Sunday’s SPEED GT season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Henzler, who has never raced at the 2.238-mile circuit, is gunning for his second SPEED GT win in as many attempts, while Michael Culver, of Westport, Conn., will start on the outside of the front row.
Henzler, who was fastest after the combined practice sessions yesterday, continued to be fast in his No. 17 Farbacher Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup today, setting a new qualifying lap record with a 1:31.469 (88.082 mph). Henzler’s second lap was fast enough to give him the pole, but went a tick faster on his third lap ensuring he would be on the pole.
“I like this track very much,” Henzler said after qualifying on the pole. “For qualifying today, we decided to go out immediately when the other drivers went out, [unlike] at Infineon we waited about five minutes. But, [we found] it is better to go out immediately.”
Henzler broke the old qualifying lap record (1:32.662, 86.948 mph), previously set by Randy Pobst in 2003, by more than a second. This is the second time Henzler has recorded a speed fast enough to capture the pole. The first time he tied Phil McClure, of Floris, Iowa, at Infineon Raceway earlier this year, but because McClure qualified the time first, he was awarded the pole position.
Driving the No. 14 First Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Culver tied his career-best qualifying position, when he turned the second fastest qualifying lap with a 1:31.716. Culver is hoping to capture his first-career SPEED GT victory this weekend.
In his return to SPEED GT, Boris Said will start his No. 30 Applied Computer Solutions Saleen SR third on the grid, after recording a lap of 1:31.886 (87.682 mph). In 55 career SPEED World Challenge starts, Said has been a consistent performer recording two wins, 25 top-five and 33 top-10 finishes.
Defending series Champion Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., will start fourth in the No. 1 Audi Certified Pre-Owned Audi RS 6 and hopes to help Audi win its third Manufacturers’ Championship in four years. Driving the No. 6 Banner Engineering Chevrolet Corvette ZO6, Leighton Reese, of Minnetonka, Minn., will start fifth.
Heading into the season finale, separated by just four points in the SPEED GT Drivers’ Championship, point leader Michael Galati, of Olmsted, Ohio, qualified 13th, while second place Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., qualified 10th.
The SPEED GT Round 10 race will make its standing start at 1:00 p.m. (PDT) Sunday, Oct. 17. The race will air live beginning 4 p.m. (EDT) and 1 p.m. (PDT) on SPEED Channel.
