Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek, Fla., earned his first Air Force Reserve Pole Position of the year to close out the 2004 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Shauna Marinus, of Folsom, Calif., will start second.

Driving the No. 42 A-Spec/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, Kleinubing turned a record-setting lap of 1:38.261 (81.993 mph) around the 2.238-mile circuit to record his 26th-career pole position, but the first of 2004.

“Today, it was awesome,” Kleinubing said of his run in the Acura. “I should have qualified on the pole a long time ago. I think we could’ve had some poles earlier this year, but I just didn’t deliver or the car wasn’t quite there. Today, the car was just perfect. It showed on the track; we were quite a bit faster than everyone else.”

Marinus also recorded her best qualifying effort of 2004, and will line up the No. 71 Tri-Point/Mazdaspeed Mazda 6 second after a lap of 1:38.733 (81.601 mph). Marinus recorded her first pole at the 2003 season finale (Puerto Rico), but had a previous best start this season of fifth.

Peter Cunningham, of W. Bend, Wis., qualified third in his No. 4 NISMO/TeamRTR Nissan Sentra SE-R with a lap of 1:38.908 (81.457 mph), and takes the yearend Air Force Reserve Pole Position bonus of $5,000. Cunningham tied Bill Auberlen with three Air Force Reserve Poles, two thirds, one fourth and one fifth. It was Cunningham’s two sevenths that broke the tie, and earned him the season-long award.

Defending race Champion Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., will start fourth in his Tri-Point/Mazdaspeed Mazda 6, followed by Memo Gidley, of Novato, Calif., in the best effort to date for the Air Force Reserve Ford Focus.

Championship point leader Auberlen struggled, qualifying 12th in his No. 1 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i. However, he remains 15 points ahead of second-place Nic Jonsson, who qualified 10th in his LectricAir/Tecmark Corporation BMW 325Ci.

The 2004 SCCA SPEED Touring Car season finale will make its standing start Sunday at 10:25 a.m. (Pacific) and will air on SPEED Channel on a tape-delayed basis, beginning at 12:00 p.m. (Pacific), 3:00 p.m. (Eastern). Live Timing & Scoring Presented by Cadillac is available during the race at www.world-challenge.com.

I can't find the 2004 SPEED World Challenge GT Championship @ Laguna Seca results anywhere.....Did Galati (RS6) win the 2004 championship? Did Audi beat Cadillac for the manufacturers championship?

Nope..Galati didn't win... Tommy Archer won the champioonship after an awesome 3rd place @ Laguna... but Audi DID win the mfg. championship over Caddy. Galati finished just outside the top 10, Pobst finished 4th I believe, was in 3rd but Archer made a killer move up the inside of the corkscrew towards the end.

Wolf won in the Porsche - walking away really but Boris Said kept him in sight in the Saleen.
