Problems occured:
Waiting for parts (make sure you have it all before you start!)
Idle issue, caused by leaky intake, and loose bolts on the TB
Head demolitoin: I learned the hard way that you NEED to use loctite on that crank bolt or else it WILL losen and destroy about 16 valves or so.
Misfire: caused by slightly bent intake valve that would seal itself up fine, and bad valve seals.

Im going to unify my threads into one nice build up in this thread when i get more time...

After she was running for a couple weeks, the bolt on my cam gear sprocket losened and my origonal head went bye bye, bending about 16valves. So i purchased a head which was form a car that was "running" when it was pulled. One week after purchase the head arrives to have this problem

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b273/t1demont1/DSC01025.jpg
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b273/t1demont1/DSC01024.jpg

Got the the exhaust valves upgraded to supertechs by a euro tuning shop down here only for them to fail. I brought them the vavle guides which they didnt install. I put the head on, car started but barley fires cyl 2. After compression and leakdown tests with nothing showing i pulled the head. I noticed oil in the exhaust port of cyl2 form a bad seal. Dropped the head off at a repudable machine shop monday. Today, wed. they get back to me saying the valve guides are warn and an intake valve is slightly warn. So now the head is getting that valve replaced, all the seals replaced, and the exhaust vavle guides replaced. Should be done monday, well see :D

Thats all for now folks

t1demont1
09-29-2008, 01:43 PM
ma head is hurr :D, shop found another fucked up intake valve from a incorrectly installed seal or something. so they replaced that valve with out uppin the price. Shes all clean and decked. im gonna go install her :D :D :D

so i had:
intake valves replaced: x2
all seals replaced
all exhaust guides replaced
decked
cleaned

plus the supertech exhaust valves chillin in there from the first work i had done on the motor means this baby is ready to purr

t1demont1
09-30-2008, 04:51 PM
Yeah i feel 500 is about the average price. They pulled everything and checked everything. replaced all the seals, exhaust valve guides, replaced 2 intake valves that were messed up, decked the head, cleaned it up, and leak tested. Ive seen people pay more for less. i think they did something to the intake valves too but i forget what. even though we have 5valves im glad we only have one head lol. Id cry if i messed up a 03-04 cobra top end. 2 heads 4valves

Cost me $350 to have the valve seats cut and new valve seals put in along with reinstalling the valves and springs (new springs and exhaust valves I supplied). $300 for the labor and $50 for the seals (got shafted on the seals since they are like $1/piece from ECS Tuning)

Sounds about right. Glad to hear its done correctly and all the necessary checks and balances were covered. [up]

Imagine having to do two of these heads? That's what the B5 S4 guys are doing.

David. I hope you got valve guides installed or at least had them measured for wear.

what fuckin good is anybody anymore? This damn head still isnt fuckin fixed! wtf?! before i threw the head on, I put the head on its side and spun the cams to check everything out. I noticed on cyl2, the cyl I had problems with, an intake valve looked like it wasnt shut all the way when it was supposed to be. So i took a flashlight and shined it into the intake ports sure enough all was dark when closed except for this one fucking valve on cyl 2. Im so pissed, so im going to the machine shop tomorrow after school. wooo fckin hooo more downtime because this head was failed to be fixed twice now. Im guessing its a valve seat, but why the hell wouldnt they check that

t1demont1
10-01-2008, 05:46 PM
now i feel fuckin crazy because i went back out into the garage to look at it again and its not doing it anymore?! wtf would cause this? I dont wanna put the head on the car becasue i know somethings not right, but im gonna have a hard time explaining this phenomenon to anyone. i wish i snapped a pick of the light getting through.

t1demont1
10-01-2008, 05:54 PM
How am supposed to explain this to a machine shop and tell them to fix something that doesnt look wrong but i know is.

Don Supreme
10-01-2008, 06:28 PM
Did they pressure test the head?

t1demont1
10-01-2008, 06:40 PM
Ill ask them when i call them tomorrow morning I dont think they did, i think all they did was pour oil into the intake and exhaust ports to see if they leaked out the valves at all since there was some fresh oil on the head when i picked it up. Im not sure if pressure testing would show anything since this didnt even show up on my compression tests and leak down.

I just know what i saw was what caused my cyl2 not to fire when the head was on. I have a feeling if i saw it open then, it wont seat properly when the cars running and the cams are opening and closing thousands of times a minute

Poopie
10-01-2008, 07:01 PM
I don't think its the seat. Double check the lifter and the springs.

t1demont1
10-01-2008, 07:13 PM
I thought it might be the seat because it looked seated on one half, but the other half was open. Im 99% sure its not the lifter becasue the cam never even hit the lifter once when i noticed the valve was open

Poopie
10-01-2008, 08:05 PM
did that valve get replaced? hhmmm sounds like a crooked guide maybe.

my head will end up being the most expensive part of my build. when all said and done i've probably sunk about 2gs in my head and its not even ported.

used aeb head with a ton of bent valves - $150
clean and 3 angle valve - $200
replaced a few lifters - $70
revolver cams - $600
new valves - $500
cam chain tensioner - $140
034 valve springs $250

uugghhh so sad and i still need to buy new guides and have them installed...which will be like $250

Tell me about it man...

Used AEB head - $150
Supertech Exhaust Valves
Cat Gold Valvesprings
Ti Retainers
Cat 3652 Cams
Cat cam gear

probably ~$2100

t1demont1
10-01-2008, 10:03 PM
yeah taht valve was replaced. all the vavles were put on a machine and tested for straightness. I was told all the intake guides were good and that exhaust guides wear out way before intake guides. maybe its the spring... it looks like it gets really close to the head, so maybe it could grab the head on compression and not release right away? defect in the head or something?

i want this shit figured out god damn i just wanna drive this beast. at this time i wish i would have spent the extra cash and gotten vavle springs and titanium retainers and had them put in so i could throw in cams later.

t1demont1
10-02-2008, 12:53 PM
I was able to get it to happen again. Goin to the machine shop in the AM to show them since i figured out how to do it again. It does it, only on that one valve when i removed the cam and put it back on. any ideas what would cause it?

Poopie
10-02-2008, 01:42 PM
probably something with the hydraulic lifter. Pull out the lifter and see if the dimensions of the inside post to the top of the lifter is the same as the other ones. Does the valve partially close? or is there and even openeing all the way around?

dougyfresh
10-02-2008, 03:32 PM
cams are at TDC Cyl#1? (obvious, but just asking)

t1demont1
10-02-2008, 03:45 PM
yes sir, and if it wasnt, the other two valves on cyl2 would be open too. This one stands alone, and only for a few minutes after i put the cam on.

I didn't want to go crazy on the cams just yet since its an off the shelf tune, and the tapp tune can be pretty tricky and already has a notorious bad idle if not set up right. Once everything is running solid I will swap out for cat 3652's.

skip the revolvers

For the2001 DBW cars that want to add VVT to and AEB head, Revolvers are the way to go. I can't tell you how many calls I've had from people running into problems tuning who were using other CAMS. The Mild grind is just enough for those who are not building a Drag car. Franlky they idle the best and my setup loves them. I don't sound like a 454 at the light either.

t1demont1
10-03-2008, 09:43 AM
ive been thinkin about revolvers for a while now, just cause i hear they have less idle issues than the CATs

Don Supreme
10-03-2008, 10:23 AM
They also make significantly less power than the cats..... Car tuning is like life. It is about trade offs / balance... give and take, ying and yang.

t1demont1
10-07-2008, 10:53 PM
from the top. I found my boost issue, it wasnt the wastegate. it was the papertowl that fell into my intake while i had the turbo off. When i started the car it sucked the napkin and stopped moving, but now the napkin is gone and its spinning freely again and boosting. so i took it for a cruise and hit it real quick and blew an intercoooelr pipe off. but it felt so damn sick nasty

That is why I put a rubber glove over anything I take off (TB, intake mani, turbo inlet, TIP, etc..). To prevent FOD (foreign object damage).

Blew an intercooler pipe clean off the car tonight lol. Getting my piping done right soon, as in welds instead of clamps and tbolt clamps where i need them.

Quick question, is the car supposed to loose fuel pressure when the car is off? I noticed my car takes a bit to turn on, after its been siting, but if it still warm and has fuel pressure it starts right up. Or maybe its just a worn starter?

t1demont1
10-13-2008, 08:41 AM
found the problem: one of the injector o-rings was torn up causing it to leak fuel out of the o-ring when the car was off. now the car starts right up. Pretty scary knowing that that could have caused the car to catch on fire. Exhuast is getting done in the next two days so i can finally think in my car :D

yeah it was the o-ring at the top of the injector that secures it into the fuel rail. Now it starts right up err time.

BTW i think someone tried stealing my rims last night. I tqd the fuck outta those lugs when i put them on like 2 months ago, and I checked them like a month ago. today my car felt wierd as hell, i thought my tire was going flat because it looked low on one side, then when i came to a stop, my god damn wheel came off! I guess im lucky that the rotor landed on the rim and kept the car up istead of landing on my sway bar/oil pan. so either someone doesnt like me, or someone likes my wheels. I think they tried to get the front two, then realized they dont have anything to put the car on, a jack small enough to get under the car, or a way to get the rears. The two front wheel's lugs were loose, but the rears were balls tight.

I love this car, so much fun to drive. I forgot how well this thing handles with those h-sport sways :D My one major complaint about it is, when I put in the clutch and it drops to idle, the afrs richen to like 10s then climb back up to 14s a few seconds later. Other than that, it seems to drive great (knock on wood). I think the issue is probably related to the intake setup, which im redoing soon.

Ive never used an afr before this car, and dont know too much except where i want the afrs to be. Is it normal for the afrs to move around move around? When idle and driving it is usually within the range of 14.3-15.1 or something like that, constantly moving.

Don Supreme
10-14-2008, 05:31 PM
Yes that is normal behavior (sweeping of afr @ idle / cruise)... I not exactly sure why, but I think it has something to do with cat efficiency.

I think I found the problem, my car is a 1.8 not 2.0. This will be fixed. Either that or I didnt replace the oil cooler gasket which seems to be leaking now. What I cant figure out is my car ran, drove the car for about 3+ hours the day, and even backed it into the garage to fix a oil leak i noticed.

Everything that I did: took off the intake manifold to figure out where the leak was comming from. Appears to be the oil cooler gasket. Threw the manifold back on becasue i figured I wouldnt be able to get a gasket that day since it was late. Started the car, but forgot to connect the TPS. car wouldnt idle, noticed my mistake and put it on, no change. tried to adapt the TB various ways since all my codes are TB related with no luck.

t1demont1
11-01-2008, 02:25 PM
I didnt replace the oil cooler gasket when the motor was apart becasue I never took the cooler off. Also, thats sort of asinine becasue you act like mechanincs dont ever run into problems. Its more of an ECU problem than anything I feel at the moment. This is an electrical issue, ecu, or Throttle Body issue. not a mechanical one.

11-01-2008, 04:42 PM
alright, runs again. stupid me, turns out there was an o-ring on one of the injectors that got pulled off somehow, any who it runs again and idles good. I really thought that would have shown up as a vac leac on the boost guage thats why i didnt try that earlier.

t1demont1
11-08-2008, 10:45 PM
zomg wtf lol rofl fast! I finally got the rest of my exhaust done and im intercooler piping fixed. However, somethings wrong with this wastegate.. its not opening. I went wot for the first time today finally and the guage wrapped around to 24psi so i let out right away. I have the boost contoller solioid turned off so it supposed to run off the gate..

pac1085
11-09-2008, 05:00 AM
you still need a vacuum source going to the wastegate, so if you still have it plugged into the solenoid (even though it's turned 'off'), there's no vaccum opening the wastegate at spring pressure...

mike-2ptzero

The correct way is the 2nd picture. The wg opens when the EBC cuts off the pressure being sent to the top of the wg.

The way in the first picture will not work because the EBC will cut off pressure going to both the top and bottom of the wg, this means there wont be any pressure to force open the wg valve.
