Thermal or Milltek?
I am thinking Thermal Race just because I like the look better. Is there anyway to polish the mufflers on the Milltek?
The other option is custom. I just sold my GF's truck to the rep for Magnaflow. He said he could recommend a couple of good shops.

I got the Milltek, but have not had a chance to get it installed yet. The tips on the Milltek are polished, and since you're not going to be under the car a lot, it wasn't important to get the fully polished piping.

I've got the Milltek non-res w/APR downpipes.. aside from some adjusting that needs to be done, there is quiet a difference in the car. The downpipes alone make the car feel much lighter on its feet.
However, I'm 21, and still think that I'll be getting a center resonator added/made, since there is so much more air and sound from the downpipes.. No downpipes, and the Milltek non-res is quite nice.

Thermal race on mine. Purchased on a group buy so it was quite a bit less than the Milltek. If I had any plans to change-out the downpipe I probably would have gone with Milltek since there appears to be a bit more experience there.
Thermal was a snap to install, looks good and probably helped out in the performance department. No track times or dyno numbers to support so it could have been my lighter wallet talking but that little power blip up around 3500-4000 is much more pronounced since swapping the exhaust.

Did any of you guys have problems with respect to fitment when getting your exhausts installed? I know some A4 guys had problems with it.
Also, anyone know if MTM makes an exhaust for the the B6 S4?

Hey Jetblue,
Talk to Jeremy at Matrix Integrated. I know they have dynoed the full Milltek system including downpipes at their shop. Not sure about other systems. Matrix also makes their own CAI for the S4 which they have also dynoed I believe.
Jeremy and Matrix are great people and they know what they are talking about. They will give you the facts.
You can contact him at jeremy@matrixintegrated.cc
Tell him that Kris sent you, he'll be more than happy to help ya out.

I was thinking about A custom or Milltek setup. Milltek seems to be the best from all the reviews and opinions between people who own it and other systems.

I have the full Milltek setup with cats and downpipes. Love it so far. Both power and sound are great.

still torn between fullback res vs non-res, i think i'd have to hear it in person to make a final judgement call

newbie question: downpipes are only for turbo'd cars?
JetBlue
10-14-2004, 10:46 PM
No, downpipes are from the exhaust manifold to the cats. This can be on either a turbo or NA engine. All B6 S4's are NA cars.

Socrates,
I would like to check out the sound of your car sometime. I will be in the Bay Area M-W of next week with a few appointments on the penninsula. Let me know if you would be agreeable.

The 100mm exhaust tips fill the rear valence nicely. Milltek is 8 lbs. lighter than stock. Milltek piping is 2.5" vs. stock 2.0". Purchased from Bob@Stratmosphere.
Very nice. I like the Avant S4 more I look at it.

there's this guy on campus that has a SICK dolphin S4 with aftermarket exhaust, and damn does it sound good! I haven't had a chance to stop him yet and ask him what he's rockin' in there, but could you guys post rear-pics of your systems so I could figure it out. wow did it sound good!

Hey Jet, if you don't already have it consider getting the Hyperflow. It really gives a nice kick and is pretty cheap. My office is on Paseo Del Norte, let me know if you want to check it out the day before so I can drive it in.

We fit one a customer provided and the pass side muffler/tip isn't pointing straight back like it should--and there is no way to straighten it out. :(
Milltek is a very nice system.

A bit of a kick but not as much as other intake systems. [;)]

so is the hyperflow worth the $350 when combined with the milltek catback exhaust?

From the dyno testing we have done, we strongly feel there are more powerful intake setups. Unfortunately from our tests, we didn't find that the Hyperflow made as much power as claimed.
So, we went forward with our own setup;

We are putting these through production and as soon as I have better pricing, I can share it as well as pics.

That's very interesting that you say that. Your website does not even show one. Where were you 4 months ago when I posted on 4 different forums asking if there was anything better? ;-)
I think the quality of the Strat intake is pretty good, until it's proven otherwise that you get more power off of another I will keep this one. I noticed a "massive" change in power on my car.
If you have any cars comming up to Sears Point this weekend for the Audi event let me know, I would love to see it.

We hadn't built one 4 months ago. :)
Our site doesn't show one and you won't find specs, pics, pricing, etc as they are in production. We don't release info on our new products until they are ready to ship.
Our intake was co-developed with the GIAC software as we were the first GIAC dealer to R&D the B6 S4 chip.
The quality on the Hyperflow is not an issue. It's a simple bunch of components---it just didn't make the 10whp for us that they claim(it gained about 3-4whp on our dyno). Just sharing the data.
Our own intake makes 11+whp. This is on a heat-soaked run.
Sorry, no cars coming to Sears Point this weekend. Although STaSIS was talking about flying a few of us down for the event. We will see.

Jeremy

will it still make 11+ whp with only a cat-back exhaust, or would i need the whole setup (chip, downpipes, and intake)?

So is your 11 WHP with the GIAC? Or the intake by itself?

If you come down you should ride in my car, just the Start Intake in it and I can deffinitly feel a big difference.

The 11+whp gain is from the intake alone, on a car that already has high flow cats and DPs.
We'll be getting a bone stock S4 in to get numbers from the intake alone (w/o exhaust) but we feel the intake will still make 8+whp by itself as the only mod on the car.

GIAC Flash gains about 12whp by itself. Our intake gains over and above that.

If you think that the Strat Hyperflow makes a big difference than I am certainly anxious for you to drive with our intake once it's ready to ship.
Again, keep in mind that I have dyno info before and after the Strat intake and ours makes over twice as much as it! :)

a little hint a while ago would have been nice for those of us who bought the hyperflow recently. I would have a hard time spending another ~$400 on an intake just to gain another 3-4hp. I like the hyperflow, its more about the throttle response than the hp IMO. besides, I think we all know that dyno's tell different stories, stratmosphere has their own...

Info here back on 9/30;
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=266342#post266342
I understand where you're coming from though as far as not wanting to buy another intake again. :( We always like to use the adage that "Good things come to those who wait." More often than not the first products that released are usually trumped by products that follow---sad but too often true.
The GIAC chip definitely takes care of the throttle reponse and elimination of the DBW lag. The intake helps too.
You are correct in that dynos read differently. The S4 we tested read 290whp on our dyno but the same S4 may read 320whp or 260whp on OCT's dyno overseas(unless Strat bought their own dyno recently). So, dyno numbers from dyno to dyno can't be compared. However, what is important and what should be looked at is the delta(change) from pre to post(before and after a mod). In this instance, we saw a delta of a 3-4whp gain with the Hyperflow intake. With our own intake the delta was a 11whp gain. Does that make sense?
Best,
Jeremy
