Well it started back like 2 months ago was having slight trouble getting into 1st/2nd gear, seemed like it took a good amount of force to get it in gear. Then all of a sudden it wont go in any gear at all[confused], at 1st i was thinkin it maybee was my 1st and 2nd gear syncros but if that were that case would i still not be able to shift into the rest of the gears? your thoughts/comments would help a ton ! thanks

With the car off can you put it into gear? If so can you roll forward if you let off the clutch?

what is your transmission? automatic or manual?

if manual transmission, i suspect the problem is the clutch.

also, please check the cable.

try aligning your shifter to see if u can get it into any gear, for having the 1-2 issues b4 that is a synchro and needs to be replaced if anything got loose in there sorry to tell u but its alll foooked but hopeullly its just a misalignment

You're already having tranny problems, didnt you buy it like 4 months ago? (I was the silver guy at Eagle Rock & @ the Stand).

Well MINE is doing the same thing, SUPER notchy going into first and second, and if I "race" going from first to second it grinds really bad. I'm gonna replace my tranny fluid to see if it helps but I'm pretty sure I need a rebuild.

If you come to the Stand on Thursday I will let you feel my shifter and I'll feel yours and see if its the same or different.

Ya man i will try and roll by but as of now my car will not even go in any gear.......... i suspect it is the clutch not the tranny

Well i spoke with my local Audi shop and they told me that there is no way in really knowing whats going on until they drop the whole tranny...... but they are thinking its a trasmission issue since the car is not going in gear when turned off ugh................

That could be caused by something as simple as a loose adjustement bolt in the shifter linkage. Make sure that isn't the problem before dropping the trans. However, the grinding noise you hear with the clutch pedal pressed, sounds like the throughout bearing is shot, that would require the trans to be dropped to replace, and the clutch should be replaced at the same time also.

Hopefully it's the clutch or clutch related issue, but sounds like you may have damage on the shifting collars internal to the transmission.

i am going through the exact same thing right now with my s4. Just got a call today from NGP that they will send my trans to their specialist to have it looked at...Funny thing is that 99% of the time it will not go into any gear( car on or off) but everyonce and while at random times it will slide in like there is no problem, but reverse has not worked at all sincie these problems started. cant wait to hear the bill on this one....i hope its not too expensive...i cant take too much more of this shit we have already dumped a shitload of money in the car....

Hijacking a bit - but I just noticed that this happens to me sometimes in my 2004 S4.
I've only got 60k miles though, and it happens even when stopped. Sometimes it's perfect though and other times it refuses to go into either gear, even if I'm rolling slightly. I have to start it in 3rd gear and then after a few hundred feet it may or may not be fine. It keeps happening at stoplights and it pisses people off!

So, with 60k miles, how likely is it to be the synchros? Or it is more likely the clutch? If it's the synchros, why would it happen when I am stopped? If it is the clutch, why would it sometimes be perfect? I never get grinds...
Thanks,
-Taylor

Picking up my S4 from shop on Monday[headbang]... exact same story... took muscle and a prayer to get to first, second and reverse... replaced clutch, throwout, pressure plate, 1st and 2nd synchros, shift fork, and cleaned up stock flywheel... [=(]shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat-loads of $$$$$[=(]... but great opportunity to upgrade stage of clutch kit...
