I can! Are you looking for gloss or matte vinyl? I'm assuming you'd be doing the install yourself. Can you give me some lengths and I'll look into it for you?

Ok here we go.

Copensating for poor measurement (I am alone :( ) and the fact that the Avant room wides from back to front, and if you wanna do the roof spoiler also...

Length would have to be about 100" and width would need to be aleast 45"

Is a single sheet this size possible? I wouldnt peice it together. If you think you can do this Ill have help later and try and measure it more accurately.

Thanks
Chris

If it's possible to do one piece for a b5 sedan roof in gloss black I might be in depending on the price. I'll get some rough measurements when I get home tonight.

I will definitely check into that for you and see what I can come up with. It may not be 45" wide though. I have 1 roll of matte vinyl sitting here that is around 1/2 that wide, but like I said, I'm sure it comes in varying widths. I'll report back findings.

So I measured my B5 sedan roof and I've come up with this. You can probably get away with 42" width, but 45" would be better. It would leave a little room for error in my measurements and in installation, which is the same as CZA420tAvant's findings. However, the length would only need to be 60". Hopefully this will help some.

Ok, I have some news. The roll is 48" wide, so that should be plenty wide enough for your roofs and anything else you want to do on the car with enough left over to do little things, like blacking out window trim on S cars.

The price on it is $10/foot and you can order any number of feet that you'd like, we should be able to accomodate any order for it.

I would be interested in this, but I have no clue how hard it would be to put on. Anyone done this before?

It shouldn't be too hard to do. The important thing is taking your time and not rushing through it.

TonyD
08-27-2008, 05:55 PM
It's not too hard but it can be tedious. The best way is to get a spray bottle with some water and some really mild soap, almost like it's all water. Spray the roof or whatever part of the car you're applying vinyl too and spray the sticky part of the vinyl. Lay it down and squeegee out the water.

I'm going to be measuring my roof tonight for those that need it.

If you are thinking of purchasing vinyl and doing this yourself, be sure to use "cast" vinyl, not calandered vinyl, to aid in conformability and reduce vinyl shrinkage.

Roofs generally are okay as they tend to not be as damaged. as for hoods, be aware that any defect in the hood ( chips etc... ) WILL show through. You are talking about a 2 mil film, as opposed the something like stone guard which is more like 13mil.

Bringin this back up as I've gotten a couple messages lately. If there are any Canadians looking for materials feel free to email me at ( info @ stuckonmedia dot ca ) and tell me your from here and I'll get you the best possible price. Just be sure to use that email address as I'm not here often.

Americans, you can email too, but after shipping charges I'm sure its cheaper locally down there.

I was just wondering if we are still able to order the matte black vinyl, and also if you know what brand it is?

I have been doing a ton of research on the best way to vinyl a car...for me in particular I just want to vinyl the roof. I have discovered that the best way to do this is with a cast vinyl with an overlaminate, which is available in gloss, luster, or matte. The best materials to use are from 3M, and for auto use we would need 3M 180c Controltac (IJ180C-10), which is a gloss black cast vinyl. Then this would need to have an overlaminate such as 3M 8520 (matte) Cast Overlaminte applied to it to make it one piece, which would then be applied to the car.

The reason I found this is better than using just a one piece matte vinyl is because the matte tends to scratch rather easy, and over the long haul would not hold up very well, even though many products claim a 5-6 year life. The overlaminate would make the vinyl last much longer, and you wouldn't have to worry so much about scratching it when washing the car etc.

Also, I have been told you want to use a cast vinyl like the ones mentioned above rather than a calender vinyl because the calender vinyls tend to shrink in the heat whereas the cast will not.

So in short, can anyone supply me/us with 3M 180c Controltac black vinyl with the 3M 8520 matte overlaminate? I need a 48" x 60" piece.
