View Full Version : Why not the Turbo Inline 5 for the S4?

Right I know the S4 engine topic has been beaten to death but after seeing the following;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4IOcFeFBbg
I dont get why Audi is making a 3.0 V6 with a supercharger when they're testing an inline 5 which is rumored to make 350hp.
I would prefer a turbocharged inline 5, man thats where Audi's racing heritage is. I don't get it!!
Anyone any wiser?

So why cant it go into a B8 chassis?
An A5/S5 with a turbo I5 would so recall the days of the Ur Quattro!

I don't think the I5 would be suitable for s4 because:
1) The upcoming S4 is really heavy(around 3700-3900pounds...maybe more). So the I5 would be too small for it.
2) In my opinion, the low end torque is going to be better in the supercharged V6 compared to the I5.
3) Fuel economy was Audi's main concern and thus, they thought that the SC V6 would be the best choice for it.
On a sidenote, I wouldn't mind a turbo engine but, only in a V6 form.
Anyway, if the speculation of a turbo I5 making it in the upcoming TT-RS are true, that would be really something. I think the I5 would be perfect for it because it would have less weight to push around(Around 3200-3400pounds) and thus ....you wouldn't need to hit the gas to quite an extend:)

I agree.
To me the whole Audi/supercharger thing comes out of left field. I've always been a fan of turbo cars so I'm partial to turbos plus they are normally much easier to get extra power from over a supercharger because to get more boost you need pulleys/belts/software VS usually software only on the turbo cars.

Just think about how many K03s Audi had to replace. Do they want to do that again? No. They don't care if you can swap bigger turbos in and get 200 more HP.

They are going to have to start replacing damaged superchargers once the tuners start releasing pulley/belt/software kits to up the boost [cool] Not sure if a blown s/c replacement will save them any money vs a blown turbo [:D]
I guess it won't be quite as common because of the added pain in the butt swapping pulley's will add over just flashing the computer. But I'm pretty sure there will still be a lot of people upgrading to bump the performance.

Modifications = voided warranty. I don't think Audi is concerned.

True, but not everyone is honest enough to leave the mods on the car after a failure. I'm sure more than one blown k03 was replaced under warranty because the mods were removed before taking the car to the dealer. :)

What's wrong with Audi, they first ruined the 2.7TT from S4, then the 4.2TT from RS6...we want TURBOCHARGED

Last I heard the new RS6 is a TT-V10. [rolleyes]
I have faith in the blown V6. I always loved turbos but I got a really good feeling about the B8 S4.

I think you are wrong and I think you have no idea of what you are speaking about!!
..I have an I5t S6 weighing about 4000lbs. and I had an equally as heavy 200 avant ...take a drive some time in a URS4/6 or a '91 200q20v and your eyes will be opened!

The B8 is a much heavier car than a TT. The supercharger will be more ideal to get it going from a stop. They don't care much about the tuning capabilites of the motor... that is not anywhere close to their priority.

When are people going to get it through their heads? Audi DOES NOT want you to mod. Would you want to release a product knowing people are going to tinker with it in a way which will make it less reliable thereby costing YOU money when something goes wrong and they want it fixed under warrenty?

i think audi completely missed this by putting in a supercharged engine.. i would take a 335i over the new s4 any day

I'm not a SC fan, prefer a Turbo charged inline 5 over a SC V6 24/7.
But there must be a reason why Audi choose SC over TC.
The inline 5 will be a transverse engine and will replace the Transverse VR6 in time, and the V6 SC will replace all longitudinal VR6 engine's in time IMHO.

I hope I'm wrong but Audi has already went through the decision of not putting a turbo I5. I was just stating what the reasons could be for not putting it.
Look, I love turbo cars and I would be the last person to agree with a supercharged engine but, Audi has made the decision and so be it. I can't do nothing.[mad]

There are even indications of a new 395 hp V8 4.0TFSI Supercharged engine.
Like the 290 hp V6 3.0TFSI engine replace the 265 hp 3.2 V6 FSI, the 395 hp V8 4.0TFSI engine will most likely replace the 354 hp 4.2 V8 FSI engine.
Based on this it's even possible to think that we will see a ±490 hp V10 TFSI Supercharged engine in the future.

I think they don't design engines for models, but for chassis...
So a I5T for TT, A3 (RS3), Golf, Passat, ...
and the s/c V6 for the B8,...
