View Full Version : Little rant about SRT-4's

So, in the past week I have seen two of these glorified Neon's and both times the drivers have made sure I hear their blow off valves by dumping them when they are right next to me. Both times the sound has been the most awful ear piercing shreek I have ever heard. I didn't even know it was possible for a car to make that awful of a noise. I thought that sound could only be heard before a velociraptor is about to bite your head off.
Anyways, I thought I should tell you about my first encounted when I almost lost my hearing... I was sitting at a light and one of these shreeking tin cans pulled up next to me with some half angel eyes going and a few other mods. So the light turns green and I start to pull away normally and he revs up his engine moves about 3 ft and then dumps his valve and takes off normally. Basically, his only intentions were to try and make me deaf...
So to sum things up, if you ever see one of these, make sure you roll your windows up or you might lose hearing. And to anyone who might have one of these... you might be able to beat me in a straight line, but you drive a fucking NEON.

Exactly how I meant it to be [>_<] Anyways, I love how once I put wheels on my car, everyone likes to let me hear their blow off valves. I think it has made me drive slower and not boost just so I don't have to hear my diverter valve.

can't say anything specific about the blow off valve, but i've got a friend of a friend who was always like "the supra this and the supra that". he had to sell it cause it was a pile o' junk, and i hadn't seen his "new" car yet. i should preface by saying he's one of these "my manual econobox is better than your automatic bently because i've got a clutch pedal". anyway, we were helping this guy move and his "new" car was sitting there. he goes, "have you seen my new car? it's the electric blue SRT right there." ok, 1. there were 4 cars in the lot. 2. it's blue, not electric blue. 3. IT'S A FREAKIN NEON. he then said, "now the most import question: does your audi have 3 pedals or 2?" "2." "oh, see, that's shame, shoulda gotten manual." fine. have fun rowing through gears in milwaukee interstate traffic during construction, which is about all we've had downtown for the past 3 years.

haha, that is sad when you have to put down someone else's car and hype yours up to make yourself feel good about it.

I have a story about those damn neons....So I have a girl friend (not girlfriend*) who lives in NY and I'm in PA (we met at school) and she knows about my obsession with cars and such and she tells me on Monday about how she met this dude who is similarly into cars.
She says he put more money in his car than I have in mine and I was like *OUCH* because she was saying his was better (not knowing that $$ aint everything) so I asked what he drove and she said a NEON.
I immediately laughed and said ITS A FUCKING NEON, and your comparing a NEON to my AUDI. For god's sake my down payment was more than his entire car.

wow this is what I just found online from Automobile Mag:
Dodge Neon SRT-4 - Road Test
Just think of it as Frankeneon.
BY TONY SWAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID DEWHURST
December 2002
One look reveals the probable character of the beast, so let's just cut right to the quick. The Neon SRT-4 rips to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, to 100 in 13.8, covers a quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds at 102 mph, and keeps on huffin' all the way to 153 mph.
Clearly, this is no ordinary Neon. An ordinary Neon — even a mildly breathed-on Neon, such as the R/T version we tested in November 2001 — hits 60 two seconds later (7.6), 100 mph nearly 10 seconds later (23.2), and the quarter-mile in 16.1 at 87. That particular Neon topped out at 125 mph.
It's equally clear that this particular Neon can run with bigger dogs. Subie's precocious Impreza WRX, for example, and even pricey sports sedans such as the Audi A4 and BMW 330i.

I'll admit, I like them. I would like to drive one sometime. Very easy to make power in. No good for tracking though. Even if you stiffened the suspension, it's still FWD and can't lay down a fraction of its power in corners.

What's that? You bought a brand new Dodge Neon SRT-4 fully loaded? and it has power windows in the front but manual windows in the rear? and you bought a Dodge NEON?

My previous car was a 04 neon SRT-4 which I bought brand new at the end of 03'. At the time I could've bought almost any car I wanted up to about $35k, but I decided on the neon. I was/is an import guy and have had 4 mazda rx-7's including a 90' turbo and a 93'TT which both were tastefully modded. I was impressed at the "out-of-the- box" performance of the neon and was sold on "best bang for the buck" I ended up removing the badges and the wing professionally. I had BC coilovers and upgraded sway bars. I had 52k miles on the odometer when the stock motor popped. The stock srt-4 motor is built like a bulldog and handled my 433whp/433lb. ft. of torque for over 35k of those miles. I ran a 11.3@128mph in the 1/4mile with 24x8x15 MT slicks at englishtown. I also had one of the "ear piercing" bov's, but the most important thing is that I wanted my car to be as much as a "sleeper" as possible so it didn't have anything "ricey" or "honda-esq" about it. I actually went back to a single 3" exhaust and the only thing that gave it right away was the huge AGP Race FMIC. I had an absolute blast running past modded V8's, WRX's STI's, Evo's, etc...I enjoyed my "neon" and I loved the fact that it was a blast to drive in the twisties as well as in a straight line....I just don't like all the juvenile kids that now drive them and act like it. The A4 is a very nice car and is definitely a "step up" from my neon. The A4 is a pig in the weight department and upgrades aren't cheap, but I'm very happy w/the A4 and in "love" with my first German car....end of my little rant..lol

sorry, i do get a little punctuation happy at times [rolleyes]
roostboost: thank you. mainly for the last couple lines of your post. this is very similar to a thread about Evo drivers a month or so back. they're good/great cars in their own right, but it's the drivers that spoil the greatness for everyone else.

I'm a car guy plain and simple and have been "bitten" by the horsepower bug since my first turbocharged car...an 87' Rx-7. I ran mid 13's in the 1/4 mile w/just the basic bolt-on's. I just installed my Eurocode Testpipe and GHL turbo-back exhaust and absolutely love the sound! Deep and throaty and LOUD! I wasn't sure if I wanted a "luxury" car to sound like a "sports" car, but I don't have any regrets(as of right now). My girlfriend hates the way the car sounds, but I think that's part of the reason why I like it so much.

one of my friend always drives his girlfriend's neon (non-srt), and he would always try to race somebody like it's a srt. we went to party before and he was trying to mack with a girl and the girl ask him what kind of car he drives and he said an neon srt. i busted out laughing and pointed to his car on the street and said, 'i didn't know that was a srt.' but the girl knew it wasn't, you should've seen his face after getting caught lying. Just give it a couple more years and there won't be any SRT4's left. By the time they all hit 36k miles, they will have fallen apart/blown up and it'll be a thing of the past.
