B8 Quattro S-Line Sedan with the 6 speed manual it is.... I'd love to get teh avant, but I would really prefer to stir my own gears. Too bad on the s-tronic.....

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — When a new European car is introduced — especially if it happens to be German — there is always some question about which of the many European powertrain combos will actually be made available to the U.S. Such is the case with the all-new 2009 Audi A4 and its wagon counterpart, the just-released A4 Avant.

Following the worldwide media launch of the 2009 A4 Avant, Audi has announced that only the top two gasoline engines will be offered in the U.S. lineup when the new model becomes available this fall: a 3.2-liter V6 with 265 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, and Audi's all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which produces 211 hp and an impressive 258 lb-ft of torque, 15 lb-ft more than the V6.

As expected, the A4 sedan will be available with both engines. The 3.2-liter V6 will come standard with Audi's new six-speed "fast-shifting" automatic transmission only, complete with steering-wheel paddle shifters. A six-speed manual will also be available on the 2.0T sedan, when equipped with the rear-biased Quattro all-wheel drive. A front-wheel-drive A4 2.0T will also be offered, and will come only with the "Multitronic" CVT, sans paddle shifters. Audi claims that the A4 3.2 will hit 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, but didn't provide a figure for any of the 2.0T variations. We expect that they could do the same trick in around 7 flat.

The Avant wagon will only be offered one way: Quattro with the 2.0-liter four and six-speed auto with paddles, making it one of the only wagons with paddle shifters on the market. Of note: Audi's highly praised "S-Tronic" DSG will not be offered in the 2009 A4, although it might make an appearance in the upcoming 2010 S4.

Both engines feature FSI direct injection technology as well as variable valve timing and lift to help flatten the torque curves.

Audi did not reveal exact pricing, but provided a vague estimation: $28K-$38K, or roughly the same as the current A4.

What this means to you: Audi is once again denying wagon lovers its strongest engine, but considering how powerful both motors are, no American buyer will need to make apologies for their A4's lack of grunt. — Greg Ary, Correspondent"

Well, I guess an Avant is out of the question now. [:(] I'm glad the sedan will be available in 2.0T QMT though. That's the ticket for me. [:)]

There is still hope. Remember when the B7 came out, the V6 didn't get a manual option either. Audi releases a few variants at first, but that doesn't mean there won't be more later.

As far as the FWD getting CVT only, well let's wait an see what happens after the initial release. Remember, Audi is planning a DSG for the A4, so it doesn't make sense to fit every option trans on each 2.0T or V6.
Once the DSG becomes available there really won't be much need for more than 1 automatic, the DSG. Trimming down the drivetrain options lowers overall costs as well as there doesn't need to be as many transmissions built for option a long with assembly line changes, and that helps the line keep moving with lower retool costs.

The 2.0T is the bread and butter sedan, and it's also the one most enthusiasts like. Thus, it makes sense for a 2.0T quattro to have a manual as well as auto option. The V6 is more like by the standard near luxury folks, thus a nice automatic makes sense, with a DSG option coming later.
A FWD A4 is pretty much a lower cost option, entry A4. A CVT doesn't make a lot of sense, because, as a money saving option a manual will give great MPG as well. I expect Audi will offer a manual in the FWD too once the DSG comes on board and the CVT can be taken away.
But, that's just a guess. [:)]

I placed an order for one of the last U.S.-spec B7 A4 Special Editions in mid-March through Diplomatic Auto Sales, for U.S. delivery. 2.0T Q MT6. Sport suspension, Convenience Package (bi-xenons). Had an estimated delivery date of mid-July.

Just got a call from the Diplo Auto Sales rep yesterday. Ingolstadt won't be able to build my car. The rep thinks it's because of the MT6; a few automatic B7's are still going to be dribbling off the line.

But they offered to substitute a new B8, with substantially the same equipment, for the same price. Very nice. Delivery date would supposedly be 1 September now.

But of course it's still not clear -- to anyone -- what's going to be available on the B8 for the U.S., standard or option. Or even if the 2.0TQ will be available, with MT6, and when.

So I'm following all of this very carefully.

I actually preferred the B7's looks and lines; hated those blingy B8 LED DRLs. But maybe the B8 won't be so bad (seeing as I don't have much choice). At least it has space on the trunk lid for a European license plate, for the next time I'm sent over to Europe. And more space under the trunk lid.

Oh... and this seems to confirm the information that Audi is going to keep the A4's U.S. price about steady. There had been rumors that the B8 would be $3K or so more expensive.

Not the way I read it. The infamous Autoblog quote: "All models will use a new fast-shifting ZF six-speed autobox, and only the front-wheel-drive 2.0L will be available with a shift-it-yourself six-speed with a third pedal."

To me, that says that if you want a manual it'll have to be FWD (in other words, the cheapest base model -- like VW does now with the Passat).

But who can say what reality will actually be...

Wait a minute... doesn't the "L" in 2.0L mean normally-aspirated?

VAG doesn't make any NA 2.0 anymore. The NA version is 2.5L 5 cyl, like base in Jetta/Rabbit.

I was going to say they make a NA 2.0 Diesel...but all of those are turbo

VAG still makes NA 2.0, but not for the US market.

Rumors. And damn' rumors.

And circular rumors.

I'm as much at fault as anyone else.

OK, how about when we post what we've heard or read, we give a reference?
