I wouldnt leave the trans like just being supported my the engine (snub mount to be exact). It cant be doing it much good.

Second off, looking at the pic of the slave cylinder....if you are talking about the little piston that is completely sideways...that is completely normal. Good luck pushing slave cylinder back into the bellhouse now!! My cylinder looked the exact way when i did my clutch and I had such a hardtime (required some muscle, lol) putting the slave back into the bellhouse.

Other than that, props to you for doing it in a parking lot....hell, I know I couldnt! I think my driveway is small!

EDIT** Is this your first time ever pulling the trans in this car? A little tip (especially since teh slave is up and out of the way now)....you can acces the VERY top bellhouse, VERY easily with a 3/8" ratchet with only a 6" extension and the 13mm socket . I used a 2foot long extension when taking it off, but when reinstalling i found out using just a 6" extension works like a charm! More than enough room too!

lol no this is the 3rd time im removing that bolt, and its a 16mm socket [up]

anyway I left the bellhousing bolts pretty much in so its not a big deal. Its supported by the engine, driveshaft, and the axles. Tomorrow the axles come out and then the bellhousing bolts and linkage and shes out [up]

anyway, your pin was able to come out and swing around? like seriously that pin is not connected to anything, just the boot. IIRC when I took it out last time it was stiff?

[:p] Sorry wrong button on the keypad!! 16mm definetly not 13mm haha

Honestly I am sure that it is fine, and you definetly have done this befoe, lol....but that tranny is hella heavy to resting with the bulk of the weight on the engine.....but whatever!

anyways, yup, you got it! That pin/piston just swung up and around all around. lol...when I first saw it I though I had somehow broken it because when I took it out it was stiff as well, but rearrange the piston (better yet remove the boot) and you will see where that pistion rest into place....totally normal!

I'm looking into this when I pull my engine this summer and clean it out (sludge) and while I am at it I will replace this too because I want better gearing. Did you get your tranny from Crazy Ray's or that place in MD?

I am subscribing because I am very interested in this. Thanks

Heres whats cool about the way Audi changed the transmission but kept the main case. The third bolt is contained on the rear diff casing just so the main case doens't have to be changed

I can't wait for my motor and trans swap. You guys are going to see photos of my AVant in pieces in my driveway and hopefully I can snap a few with some Porsches and S8s and such driving by my house. Gruppe5 did the 2.8 B5 swap in my B6 last week. I am very pleased with the gearing on the highway. Getting a lot better gas mileage with the highway driving. Also it didn't hurt the the B5 transmission was $800.00 cheaper than the B6 that I found.

Good luck with you install.

No sorry, haven't performed any mpg logging. I can tell you that I took a trip to New Hampshire last week, which is about 160 miles from me and got there using a little over a 1/4 tank of gas, driving a pretty constant speed of 80-85 mph.

I bet that if I told you that "something" gave you boost 700 rpm earlier, or if you gained 700 rpm before you redlined, you would say different. 700 rpm is a big difference. Try shifting your car 700 rpm earlier in every gear and tell us what the difference is like.

Chris, I was wrong about that sensor. It was different on the 2.8's. They had a 1.8, but whoever grabbed the engine cut the harness right at the connector. There was only like 3mm of wire.

looks like the top of the tranny mount doesn't have the correct bolt pattern on the new one. does it? or will you have to exchange the housing from the old to new one?

Ok here goes...

So

A. You blew your tranny with all 170whp of fury (my case), or maybe more
B. Your tired of being at 4k at 80 miles an hour

So you find a 2.8 Trans, I got mine at the junkyard for $95 so I figured Id stick that sucker in. You will notice 2 things when looking at a B5 trans. The cases are EXACTLY the same except for

1. Axle hubs
2. Rear Case

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00405.jpg

Here are the axle hub differences

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00407.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00408.jpg

Here is a shot of the rear cases, B5 on the left, B6 on the right

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00414.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00415.jpg

So obviously you will switch those, this is how

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00411.jpg

I used a prybar, but that got old fast, so I realized a new method. Use a long bolt you have and secure something behind the axle hub. Screw the screw in the axle hub against whatever you used until it starts pulling the hubs out. This is what they will look like

B5 Flange

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00412.jpg

B6 Flange

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00413.jpg

Swap those suckers in and put the trans in

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg186/AudiA4_18T/DSC00417.jpg

and ENJOY!

true, well I pretty much have a non existent powerband with the ER Comp/2.0/K03 combo I have going... Im sure a nice 25psi pull on a BAT in 3rd would be nice with the longer gears... I may just go and grab that other trans from the junkyard for a spare/track trans

If you grab that I might take it off your hands this summer. BTW did you build your block or who did it? I'm looking for a 2.0 build for a GT2867 or GT30. Thanks

eh, 400 is old news, the S362 put down 500+ wheel on that 2.0L racecar at 24psi so I figured 450whp is a decent goal

I thought that transmission is the same as the 6spd that comes in the B6 1.8T.

You guys find me a 2.8L transmission yet? I emailed my buddy in NJ. He's keeping an eye out for me.

B6S4 tranny or nothing Doug [:D] j/k, I know how expensive those are used. I tried to find one last year but could not find anything for under $4K with everything I needed to swap.

I see 2.8 trans all the time on the salvage websites...

Yeah. that was a goal a while ago until I realized the $$ involved. I'd rather replace the syncros in my 1.8 5spd trans first. If you see any 2.8s email (dougyfresh@vt.edu) a link to me. I really should be looking and calling but am too busy right now.

is all the linkage the same between the 5 and 6 speed? I am sure that the shifter is different. I wonder if the B6 6speed shifter can be used.

Nope. The linkage is different. If you source a 6spd get the linkage from the shifter down to the trans. All of it. You'll save yourself the hassle.

Where are you going to get one? They are difficult to find and crazy expensive.

btw, the b5s4 tranny is different than the b6 a4 6 speed tranny... and the b6s4 tranny is a different tranny again... some have different final drive ratios, so you'd need to swap the rear diff too... keep it simple guys [;)]

Hence the $4K+ bill for a used one with all the associated parts to swap...

Hence why I'm focusing on a 2.8L 5spd. I figure the taller gears will be fine for me. My friend's 1.8 Golf had a taller 5th gear (out of a TDI) and I liked how that drove. For me, its perfect since I'm all highway. hahah. Liter o'Cola anyone?

You actually feel comftrable leaving your car bumperless in a college parking lot?? Dont you know what they could all do?? They could take those nice E-codes and ABT grill in a jiff... Not to mention the intercooler and other parts...

Is it even legal to work on your car in a parking lot??

B6 6spd final drive is 4.111 same as B5 S4, also same 01E numbers
B6 5spd and B5 5spd have 3.89 final drive
B7 A4 and B6/7 S4 6spd have 3.89 final drive

swapping a B6 6spd or B5 S4 into a 5spd will require a new rear diff

B7 2.0t 6pd has lowest gearing for hwy crusing ~88mph/3000rpm, even the 5th in 2.0t is longer than 1.8t 5spd trans

B5 V6 in 5th is the same gearing as B6 in 6th gear ~75mph/3000rpm
B5 1.8t gearing is a bit longer than B6 5spd, ~200rpm drop at 65mph.

so will a b7 2.0t 6 speed and rear diff fit an 02 a4 wit a 5 speed

I think so, but don't quote me.

It'll be cheaper to swap the 5th gear out for a European TDI 5th gear. That is my plan in the future. I can then go back to my 1.8T trans (have a 2.8 now) and have an overdrive 5th gear yet still haul ass through gears 1-4 since they are shorter than the 2.8.

No I dont. I know what "they" could do, but I had no money to get a bumper or anything at that time. Its probably illegal to do what I did, but I needed to get my car going again, and I did for ~$150

so will a b7 2.0t 6 speed and rear diff fit an 02 a4 wit a 5 speed

Looks like the 02X and 01E are both options for what kind of trans the B7 has, Bentley doesn't make it too clear. If its the 01E thats the B5 S4 trans, which would mean that a B7 trans is = to a B5 S4 trans which would be pretty cool. The question is what the 02X trans came in

Audi only uses 2 types of CV joints, and the smaller 100mm CVs from 4000s are not found on the A4s thus the center drive shafts and flanges must be the same 108mm CV joints.

all audis share bell housing patterns as well.

if the front fits and rear fits, all you need is linkages.

01E trans part numbers are no longer in B chassis according to ETKA from 05.5, even if it's 01E, the final drive matches the 5spd at 3.889 and CV joints are still the same

of course if someone actually wants to dump a few grand, some precise measurements are needed

your stock axle flanges should just press in like i did with the 2.8... Bellhousings are all the same also...

Linkage shouldnt be a huge deal. Im just curious about what the differences are between the 02x and 01e
