View Full Version : unreal gas milage

I have been playing around with watching the milage on the car, and it is really...really bad.

It averages 17.2, and I have been driving it like a *****. Any time the car is accelerating the mpg is like 6.0-8.0, obviously when I cruise it goes up...but rarely do i have my foot on the gas and its over 20.

I think this car gets worse milage than my 95 M3 with bigger injectors that I BEAT the hell out of. Although, the S4 is a tip...so that hurts milage.

Either way, i thought the point of a turbo car was big power out of a smaller engine = more MPG. Its only a 2.7, and all my 3.0's (m3, 300zx, supra, maxima, 3000gt) did better.

Nothin bad i guess, just a little annoying. I hate watching the mpg dip to like 5.0 when im gettin on it

Um, you have a performance car,, there are not to many that get good gas milage. Well other than a corvette C5 or C6. 17.2 is about right. If you drive it like a little old man, you will get 20.[:D]

I drive 50 minutes to work every day with my 2000 S4, 6-speed. I drive about 60 mph, hit about 4 stop lights, and accelerate with fun. I'm getting on average about 28 mpg. If I were to drive very conservative all of the time, I'm sure that I could hit 30 mpg. Others on this web-site have complained about getting poor gas mileage like you, but I don't know if they ever resolved anything. I wonder if the cars with bad gas mileage have a chip in them or if they have a mass air flow sensor issue. I fill up with 87 octane.
You may want to do an emissions test to see if you are running rich.

Don't forget that you have a second differential and need to power FOUR wheels now instead of just two.

yes more power out of a smaller displacement engine, but by adding the forced induction you are actually increasing the displacement of the engine, you are now able to compress and cram more a/f mixture into that same motor making it behave like a larger displacement motor.

One thing that will help is keeping up on maintenance of the air filter, fuel filter (especially), and the spark plugs. Bung some fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas with the highest octane fuel you can find. Then make sure you put 91 octane in it. I actually SAVE money by putting 91 octane in (that's the highest they have around here). With 87 octane, I get about 250 miles to a tank, with 91 I get upwards of 310 miles to a tank.

My old 944 Turbo would get almost 28MPG on a highway trip!
I really miss the 22 gallon tank on that car as well.

What the hell you guys runnin 87 octane gas?!?!?! Aren't you experiencing any pinging when you punch on it? THe computer will try to compensate by retarding your timing, but this is baaad! Stick with 91+ octane.
I drive "spiritedly" but try to get into top gear as soon as possible. I get between 19 and 24MPG in mixed freeway/city driving. I got nearly 30MPG on my roadtrip down to Socal and Vegas and that was 90% freeway at 85-90mph. Face it, you have a twin turbo AWD performance car, you're gonna get compromised gas mileage.

I fully realize that a performance car will not get good gas milage...that doesn't mean that I should just ignore the fact that its getting really bad milage for this particular car.

I just want to be sure there's nothing wrong with the car

There is something definietly wrong with your car. It should not get this bad a mileage. Your are also using the wrong fuel 91 plus only, which could also mean you are not taking car of mainteance on your car. Have it checked by an audi technician.

Me? I think you are confusing me with the wrong poster....I never use less than 92 on my car, ever.

the car is audi certified...i just don't have time to get it there and waste a day

I get low 20's in the city and around 26/27 on the highway and I'm stage II, 17 sounds pretty low. Get that thing to the dealer and make them give you a loaner to beat on, so your not inconvenienced.

I got 17 or so in my tip too. Now I get about 21 in my manual. I think the automatic just sucks up gas like crazy.

If it's a 2000 maybe get someone to take a look at the maf.

The milage will dip down very low if you mash the pedal to the floor. That's the nature of any turbo car. The assumption is, however, at some point the pedal does come up for air.

I might suggest that the computation of MPG may be more apparent since the Audi is doing the calculations for you. With the exception of the BMW, i don't recall the other cars you listed having that function.

The BMW has a simliar size engine - but it also does not have a turbo.

Few things suck gas like a turbo on full boost. (I own a thirsty 1994 RX7 TT, as well, I should know!).

That said, you should easily be able to achive 24MPG on the highway. I can do this cruising between 3000-3500 RPM, and my 2000 S4 is K04 powered.

I used to drive that M3 HARD...and it was pretty good. I have been driving the S4 like a bitch, partially because im kinda scared of hurtin the turbos. Last car I had that was turbo was a 1988 Conquest that blew up the day after I sold it (that = one pissed off kid callin me the next day). That car, though, got like 9mpg. So I figure the really low mpg and it blowing up might have been related.

I dunno, its audi certified so I am going to just bring it to them and tell them to check that shit out. While they are at it I want them to do somethin to make my seat stop rocking, so annoying
