View Full Version : Miller/track sluts- Whats the most cost effective way to get scca licensed?
So im really thinking about spending the cash to get scca licensed and run some events this summer for the expeirance. Im also in flight school, so i don't want to go to a skip barber and drop some real coin to get it, although i would love to. Beaverun (track near pitt,pa) is only about 20min from my house, so it would be sweet if i could get it there. Basically, im just looking at the best way to go about it, and what am i looking at price wise ball park, thanks.

Skip Barber is a good way. If you do the 3-day racing school you can get your SCCA license. I really recommend the Skip Barber school, the instructors are awesome and you get alot of racing time and class time. I learned alot from it, and I thought I knew a lot before.
Yeah, i would love to do skips, but it is pretty salty for the 3day school.

If you want to do it the cheapest way - here is how.
Rent a car.. and do an SCCA school. You can get a spec-miata or a spec racer ford for a day for about $500 to do a school, and then do the school with the volunteer instructors. They will watch you, you go through your school days to get your regional license. You can rent cars for a double regional weekend for less than half a skippy school.
Then - once you do that - take the advanced course or arrange a private test day with a professional driver/instructor at an SCCA regional. I have helped several drivers go from mid-pack to compete for race wins just by working with them over the course of the weekend. The costs is essentially what you would normally pay, plus another $350/day for the coaching. That includes data acquisition and camera replay coaching.
Skippy is the other option, but when you are all done, you have a license and still haven't been to a race.
Our school is Texas (www.GoTeamMER.com) does advanced schools, but won't get you licensed but it is half the cost of skippy and more in-depth. However.... I still think skippy is a great program and now with the mazda mx-5 school, a good place for someone to cut their teeth in production cars.
Yeah, i know skips would be the best, but 3,700 is alot of cash for 3 days.

Once I get the money I loaned Uncle Sam (taxes) back, I'll be heading for the Audi Driving experience this summer. Probably does nothing SCCA-related, but I'm just doing it for fun. RS4/R8 will be a real thrill!! Good luck bro.

Iv heard you don't get to drive the R8. You can only sit with a instructor as a passenger.

Well that would blow!! I know there are different packages or whatever, will have to read the fine print. If i'm going for thrills I want to be gripping the steering wheel, not the OH SHIT handle.

You definitely will NOT get to drive the R8....
Miller, is skips prolly my best option here if im going to drop some coin? It seems they have there stuff all in one bag, i don't want to spend this type of cash and be disapointed. Also, is it pretty much a given that you can get your scca license after the 3 day?

It is pretty much a given you can get your license. I would go to Road Atlanta personally... the track has some speed and the mx-5's there are a blast. Otherwise, if you want to do it cheaper AND get your first couple regional races out of the way, for the same price - do the scca school, double regional - test day with a pro.

Do what Millerracer said...2 day SCCA licensing school...rent a spec miata...walk away with license...assuming you dont pass under a yellow flag. :)
P.S. but I had a spec miata at the time.

The R8 is part of the ALMS Vitesse program. The cars (a Ford Mustang GT in race trim, an R8, and a Porsche GT3) are provided by the manufacturers for their VIP sponsor programs. The only way to get a ride in it is to be invited by the race team or their sponsors.
