Made a trip from Tn to NY a few months ago and was gunned at 78mph. Normally if I'm driving in NY, I should be fine below 80 mph at 65, but not in Va in this case. Just wondering how much over the speed limit can u go in your state? And what r your opinions, what is speeding?

i think there is a law that stats you are given a certain % of the speed limit due to speedometer error, it is usually 10% of the speed limit so if your goign 70 you are given 7 MPH. dont know if that's true but it's what i have heard, maybe it's just in my state. I have gone by cops cruising at 78-79 in a 70 and i dont get pulled over.

Speeding is speeding, but normally I am safe at 10 over the posted speed limit. I am in Kentucky and near a military installation. So I have a couple things going for me.

Anyone driving faster than me is speeding. Signs are guidelines for safety. [:D]

Most states give you 9 over. However, you can get a ticket for going any amount over the speed limit. VA is extremely strict with this tickets. I got my first ticket there when I was 18 on my way down to Charlotte, NC.

Legally, any speed in excess of the posted limit or deemed too fast for environmental conditions is speeding.

There is no special formula for "how much over the posted limit you can go" in any jurisdiction.

Down here in SoCal CHP doesn't pull people over doing anything under 80 due to the fact that most people here speed on a regular basis.I was told this by a senior CHP officer.

yeah VA is really quick to pull ppl over and you cant use radar detectors there so it makes it even harder. I live in NC and am from PA and I would say that up to 10 max, probably around 5-7 over would be legal by there standards

I was clocked twice in 3 days doing 83 in NY i usually don't get stopped unless i'm going over 85 so idk what gives lately. The first cop was an ass the second let me go with a no seat belt ticket. Today again i was doing 78 and passed 3 cops on the thurway and neither flinched. Keep it under 80 and you should be ok.

Where in NY are you? City highway limits are 50 and most surrounding areas are 55.

Here im miami you are allowed to go 5mph over the limit. Since i have the radar detector i normally go whatever speed without really caring unless its an area known for cops then i go 5mph just in case the passport fails!

Virginia really sucks my dad got reckless driving for going 83 in a 55. The cop was a real ass hole. I've gone by cops on i95 at just over 80 and they have done nothing.

95 on backroads...no coppers there. so i guess i'm not speeding? did get clocked 30 seconds from my house (75 in 55 thanks to the over mph cuz it would have been 80). trooper let me off in court though. i wave to him now cuz he uses my driveway as a hiding place. sneaky lil bastard ;)

hahaha. yeah.. VA cops are a-holes. Anything over 80 is reckless here... Also, anything over the speedlimit can get you a speeding ticket...

I'm just pissed that we are the only state not allowed to use radar detector...

I've got no problem with going that fast. Please, please make sure nobody else is around you when your doing that. You come up on people so fast at that speed. Lets say someone who is driving at a normal speed, looks in the rearview or side mirror to change lanes. They wont see anyone and start to move over. You'll come up on them, and then they'll do something your not expecting and bang! An accident that you could've very easily just killed someone. If you want to take your life into your hands, like I said, please, please do it when nobody else is around you to make it as safe as possible. THat's what I do!!

lol..who here in socal DOESN'T drive 80? [:p]

it's like...if you DON'T drive that fast, you're pressured to because everybody is going that fast. anything under that, you pretty much get tailed, cut off, honked at, or given bad looks. [headbang]

In NJ the cops will usually give you 10mph on the highways, they like to get people going 15mph or more over the limit. This is a bigger ticket (4 points) with bigger fine.
Quite often traffic is going 10mph over the limit anyway.

I usually keep my speed to 5mph over on local roads and 10mph over on the highways.
I haven't gotten a ticket or been pulled over in over 10 years.

Speeding is just plain out speeding. Its officer discretion if he wants to pull you over for 1mph over the speed limit or whatever he/she feels like. You are correct, signs are guidelines, but they're guidelines for a reason since people don't know how to act on the road. I live in Germany and the Autobahns have a great system in place. Its illegal to be in the left lane unless you're passing another car on the Autobahn. And there's plenty of places where there's no restrictions on speed limits. But be aware that if you get into an accident going over 130 kph (roughly 78 mph) then you're insurance company is likely to find you driving recklessly and not likely to cover you anymore or hike you're rate up to outrageous prices. I get annoyed when I go back to the states because there are so many people just hanging out in the left lane doing nothing but cruising.

yup totally up to the officer. anything over the post limit is considered speeding.....

cops are dicks. just can't stand them. and yes i have a good friend that is a state trooper (was friend before he became state trooper) and admits he's a dick to people at times, just b/c he can. so when he gets shot one day, o well.

Yup, that's exactly how it is in southern California. But usually most cops will ignore you for going 75mph on the freeway/highway.

That's sad you feel that way....

Next time you get in some trouble or something where it might be handy to have a cop around make sure not to call 911 or tell them you only want an ambulance and fire department to show up. Or call the big bouncer friend from the club....seriously that's immature and even worse how could you say the words "friend" and "o well" together like that? God forbid something happens to him one day and he has a funeral with honors the way that officers do. Friend?!?!?!....yeah right.

I've unsubscribed from this thread and won't be responding anymore so don't look for a response from me.

I think you just got lucky with that guy. Back in 2001 when i had just got my first Audi, a B5... i got pulled over on the 405 near the 22 interchange for doing 5mph over the limit.

Sorry to say it... but that's just plain stupid. You should put a little thought into the other people sharing the road with you as well as any passengers you might be carrying.

Two years ago a girl i grew up with wrecked at 100+ and killed her best friend who was riding in the front passenger seat. She was convicted of wreckless driving and manslaughter and did two years in prison.

I used to do stupid stuff before I found out what a bad accident was really like, and I learned it the hard way. A drunk driver crossed into my oncoming lane and we hit just slightly off center from head on. I was doing about 40mph and he was at approx 35mph. I was knocked out cold, separated knee, torn MCL and meniscus, slipped disc, concussion, and didn't walk for almost three months.

The guy who hit me fled the scene but was caught a block away. His blood alcohol content was .22!!!

oh... and the fastest I've taken my B7 was 153mph on the 15 while driving to vegas. I had no passengers and there was no traffic in sight in either direction. Pretty intense experience.... and STUPID.

i see cops passing me on the freeway ( non emergency )
but i mean the average mph on the freeway in socal has to 45 in the right lane and 110 in the left lane
those are just averages.

Haha, not always! occasionally you get a guy that's holding up the entire freeway by going 65 in the leftmost lane. Then traffic slows because everyone has to try to merge one lane to the left and to pass that guy because he refuses to switch to a "slower" lane.

Goddamn I hate that, when I do get a chance to pass I let off the gas and sound off my BPV, they're usually in little shit Corolla's or Camry's.

The best is when they cut you off to quickly get into your lane then slow down like they're just chillin. WHY!?

I have fun cutting them back off though. [drive]

I jinxed myself by typing that. It happened to me just now on the way home from school/work. What made it even more annoying was that this was on a 2-laned highway: the people in the right lane decided to pace themselves evenly (but not intentionally) with the slow driver going 60mph in the left lane. I decided to not give into frustration and opened up the windows/sunroof and enjoyed a nice cruise with the beautiful weather in sunny SoCal.

I used to "get revenge" on those people but my current "work" involves checking commodity prices like oil (futures for oil are expected to rise again in Feb-March). I'll pass and save on gas consumption.
