Last night I was taking a family friend home and on my way back I see flashing lights on my rear view mirror, and I thought:
-"WTF I could have not been driving better". I stopped put on my hazard lights, turned off the car, and rolled down all my windows.
As soon as the officer asks me for license and registration he starts questioning me and my friends why was nobody riding shotgun, He tells me that I must have a ton of tickets on my "speed machine", and I told him not one, not one that has validity.
I asked:
-"Why was I stopped"
He told me:
-"Well, your car has an after market exhaust, wheels, body kits, yellow fog lights, Sline badges, Sline seatbelt covers, GPS, radar detector,etc.... You are practically asking for it, your car looks fast and you paraded by us twice."
I told him:
-"The car is basically stock looking outside, I was going the speed limit, using my blinkers, and people can seat wherever they want in my car.
Since he could not get me for any of the above he told me:
-"Raise your windows about 3.5 inches",
I did and he placed the tint measuring device on the glass and he said my fronts where 14% and my rears 18%.
I said:
-"There is no way, I personally piked the tint brand and percentages. They are top of the line 3M tints 35% in the front and 25% in the back.
He said:
-"The machine tells me otherwise."
He then proceeded to give me a warning for """"""Illegal tints""""", and to do that he needed 3 other officers and a backup car. What a waste of resources.
Ps. I know he measured my tints because I lowered all my windows, but I did so as a sign of courtesy to him, so he knew what to expect inside the car, to relax him and show him that nothing was going to surprise him or harm him.
Do these look illegal to you. (Sorry for the crappy pictures from my phone.)

tints on the bmw look darker. looks legal to me. end of the month quota.

The reason your tint is darker on the meter is because your car comes from factory with a small percentage of tint. So that plus aftermarket tint makes it darker than legal. Next time look through your house window then compare it to looking through a car window and you'll see what i mean.
What exhaust are you running or are those just tips? And where'd you get that rear valence to fit the oval tips? Pretty damn hot. I like.

just jealousy... you car looks pretty stock actually... i dont know much about b7's though
i was driving pretty agressive downtown a few months ago... i swerved inside my lane to show my friend how good quattro is... a few minutes later i see blue lights and the cops ordering my to pull over... but i was on an entrance ramp with no where to go... finally i stopped and two SWAT officers run over with guns drawn... they put me and my friend though a lot of questions but ended up letting me go with a warning.. lucky i guess

kinda same situation HID. was dropping my friend off at his apartment. i pull over into a parallel parking spot and the cop pulls up behind me with his lights on. he comes up to the car and already have my license and registration and insurance ready for him. he says he pulled me over because my license plate illumination lights were out. i said, "oh, thank you officer i was not aware of that". he gives me a warning, but as he's walking back to his car i notice that one of his head lights were out. i let it go. i then return back to my place and leave the lights on and get out just to see if they really are out and it turns out my "license plate illuminations lights" were fully functional.

Wow that sucks. Sounds like a real scumbag bacon. Sorry to hear it. Those things are probly rigged or they work improperly. If you have a dark interior that could affect it because theres less light behind the tint. Also just someone behind the window could do it because the silhouette could make the darkness appear darker. I dont think they actually read the darkness of the tint, they probably read the amount of light that goes through which is retarded. You should go back and let them know your angry, tell the story. If they dont lighten up then take fight it in court.

I've been pulled over once in the winter because the officer thought I was "weaving all over the road, in and out of my lane". There was an inch of snow on the ground, and I had Quattro and snow tires. I was only going 5 or so mph over, and it was late with no other cars on the road. I ended up with a speeding ticket for like 7mph over or something...
I've been pulled over twice just because I had dark window tint on my first car. I always roll my windows down all the way too if I get stopped, but cops know if your windows were dark or not and usually plan on testing them. My cops have always wiped the window clean with their sleeve (so it doesn't turn up darker) but you do have slight stock tint so if you buy 35% visibility tint, it will always be darker in reality.
I once asked a cop what the dumbest thing you can get pulled over for (in Wisconsin, I don't know about everywhere) and he said they can pull you over to check if you have washer fluid. Apparently, it's illegal to have no washer fluid in case your windshield gets dirty and needs to be cleaned (that's illegal too). If you have no fluid it's around $100 fine haha

I got pulled over by a cop in Highland Park IL... she told me that I "have no taillights" and that when I switched lanes in front of a truck "he almost hit me because he couldn't see my car". I guess having tinted taillights in the DAYLIGHT makes your car invisible.

Hey Hid your un Davie right?im in Palm Beach the same crap is going on over here, they have been pulling over people for the dumbest of reasons, a friend of mine got a ticket because of the same reason, the tints which are the ones that the dealership installed, so my best guess is they need the money to pay for what they spend on Christmas or something, because its been going on for the last few days here, you see a car pulled over almost every moment, yesterday i count them, 5 cars i saw pulled over.

I thought the same thing, my car is debadged and the remaining Sline logos are tiny. Is not like they add extra Hp or speed for that matter.
If they don't lighten up then take fight it in court.
Don't worry, I will go to the police station to get my tints retested, and if they still fail, I'm going to get the douche bags who tinted my windows and my lawyer involved. If they pass I'm taking it to court.

Its a Milltek exhaust with vibrant oval tips and an S4 valence, my exhaust is the quietest aftermarket exhaust that is out for the B7s.

I never got in any trouble for my tinted taillights, they just attracted too much undesired attention from other cars, so I took them off. However when the lights where on you could not tell they are tinted.
My window tints have always been the same 3M 35% in the front and 25% in the back.

Cops are just out there to tax people and many of them are also egotistical douchebags. Safety is never a real concern, thats why they never think twice before embarking on a high speed chase.
There has been a incident recently on a highway outside of montreal where a mother was "speeding" ~10km/h over the limit on a clear day, the cop cars went in to pursuit, she panicked and lost control of her car went over the median and hit a car going in the opposite direction. Three people got killed that day, including her son, who was in the backseat. All for what, a monthly quota demanded by the city?

I got pulled over for my liscense plate lights being to dark. I asked if I could get out and take a look at them and the office wrould not let me. At that point I figure he was hoping I was drunk or something as was just using that as an excuse. Eventually his radio start squaking and he let me go with a warning (the only warning I have ever gotten, usually just tickets). I went home and looked at the lights and they were just fine. I have a pretty good opinion of police officers because they have a awful job but this guy was a real tard.

I hate state patrolmen and city cops. Sheriff's never give me trouble, the tickets I've gotten from them I blatantly deserved. However, when I had a customized honda (I was 16-18) I used to get harassed all of the time. "Your lights are too bright" (I had projectors when they FIRST became available to buy, stupid things were expensive!), "Did you know your exhaust is illiegal?" (It was a Greddy 50-state legal exhaust, I told one cop if he didn't believe me that the metal stamp on the bottom of the muffler would prove it), "you accelerated too quickly" blah blah blah. I got pulled over in that 3 year period alone more than 40 times, 3 tickets in all of those.

I got pulled over going 51 in a 40 on Saturday. BS! I'm kidding, of course. In my defense, it was my little brother's lifted Ram and he hasn't recalibrated the speedometer, so I thought I was actually going less than 5 over (normal). LEO was cool, though, and let me off with a warning. This was @ 3:30 A.M. and as soon as I pulled back on to the road, he had someone else pulled over.

A bit of a long one.
A few years ago I was driving a '93 MR2 Turbo (amazing car) on the way to my then girlfriend's house. I left work early and was in a good mood. I started passing cars on this two lane highway. It was really stupid to pass people over a double yellow but again, I was young and dumb. Well, upon getting to the bottom of this hill, a highway patrol car crested the hill coming towards me. At this time I was probably doing 90mph in a 50mph zone. I looked him in the eyes, he looked at me and then at the dash mounted radar thing. At that time I knew I was done for. So, as any rational 19 year old would do, I tried to find the first place to hide my tiny black car. I pulled into this gravel driveway and tried to drive behind some hillbilly's house. No luck, there was a fence around the whole thing. I thought I was done for right then. So I got out of the car and waited. I looked through the row of trees in front of the house and the county mounty was stuck in traffic because he took the u-turn too wide. When he did get his butt back on the highway and flipped on the lights and flew right by me and the car. I was shocked but still shaking little a freighted, little girl. I waited a few minutes, hopped in my car and drove on. Not two minutes after getting back in my car, another highway patrol car was behind me. So played it cool and right when I was making a left turn to get on another highway, I got stuck under a light and it turned red on me. I went and shortly thereafter I got pulled over. The officer asked if I was the maniac from earlier, I said no, he almost got hit by a semi and he let me go to chase down the truck driver.
So, my lame ass getting pulled over story is: I got pulled over for running a red light when I was already in the intersection.

I got pulled over the second day of owning my RR Civic Si like 3 weeks ago. I was doing 35 in a 45 zone, but was in second gear because I was still getting used to a stick shift.... so the guy pulls me over....for get this "sounding like I was speeding" and "driving agressively"....he didn't give me anything but a warning but come on.....when a guy drives by loudly but obviously slower than everyone else- and is completely safe- why still pull him over?
nice guy in the end and even smiled when I wished him merry Christmas- never been pulled over any other time- but sorry HID that you got stuck with such a lame ass cop- most of the ones I've met are pretty chill
Hasn't happened in the Audi yet, at least for lame reasons.
Saw oncoming traffic flashing their lights so i pegged it on Cruise Control right at 40 mph, which was the speed limit. As i passed the radaring cop, he holstered his radar and began to take off after me. When he pulled me over and came up to the window. I gave my typical, "Hello officer, what the problem?" i was really nice and curteous in my tone. I made the joke, "I couldn't have been speeding." He replied, "No your speed was fine. But your truck is too high to not have mudflaps, and your stereo was too loud." Now, i'm not retarded i turn down my radio when i'm around police, so how he got that i have no idea. but i got written up for Mud Flap violation, and too loud of stereo. LAME!!!!! must have been a slow month. I never put mud flaps on, never went to court or did anything about the two violations and nothing ever came of them. I check with a cop buddy just to make sure i wouldn't be suprised at some point by a bench warrant or something. Usually in Cali, if you get pulled over for not having mud flaps, you'll have to get mud flaps installed and signed off at a police station, or you'll get a minor bench warrant. But it turned into nothing, SO SCREW YOU COP!!!!

Noffy, it is in Oregon though not sure of the "threshold" of breaking the law. I was visiting some friends in Salem last month cruising with the stereo up. My buddy spotted an officer, reached up and turned OFF my music, I'm like what's up dude? Said that people are getting nailed constantly these days. In California, it's any level of audibility at 50 feet from the vehicle. Oregon may be the same thing come to think of it.

I mean, yeah it sucks, but if you are legitimately asking if the tint looks illegal, then yes it does. Most states permit 50% up front, and you have roughly 30% tint up front (35 + factory 'tint'). Again, a stupid thing to argue over, ESPECIALLY because you rolled all the windows down for him. You successfully eliminated the main reason for tint laws, the officer's safety. They hand out 'tint' tickets and no front license plate tickets while cars are PARKED here in Oxford OH. Merely another way the town exploits its student population (which happen to be the ONLY source of outside income and economic stability for Oxford). $165 for tint ticket, $150 for no front plate. Furthermore they manipulate the situation by requiring the vehicle owner to be present in court (so not a 'fix-it' ticket, owner needs to be there to fight the ticket). Out of the 15,000 undergrad, I'd say maybe 10% (and that is generous) own their own vehicle (most cars in parents name still). So unless the person's parent shows up in court, the ticket stands.

Stereo too loud!!!!!! I have never heard such a BS excuse. Is there really and legal limit addressing the volume of you stereo?
haha in cali if you can hear it 50 feet away from the car you get a ticket.
but on my head unit i push a button wen i see a cop and it cuts the bass off, then when they pass, i put it back on==]

in the town i work in, if a cop can hear music outside your car (even if windows are down) they can ticket you. there's also a "muffler" requirement for loud exhaust ( a friend with a stock SRT filed a lawsuit for getting a $800 ticket) and there's no decible limit for "loud exhaust".

Best. Ticket. Ever.
well I got pulled over for "looking suspicious". I was driving around a neighborhood really slow looking for the house number for a flower delivery. I must have doubled up twice or something because I saw the same cop. I found the house and was about to get out when the cop pulled me over. He asked for paper work.I told him I was delivering flowers. He asked yeah right where are they. I asked permission to open my trunk. He obliged and felt like a idiot after he came back and apologized and told me about some robberies in the area. Being valentines day I told him to take a set of roses home. He said he couldn't take gifts I said I would look the other way. He said thank you and went on his way.

Dark and raining around 8pm made a tan '97 contour look suspicious after leaving a causeway on the way to get gas. there was a decently nice restaurant on the causeway called Charlie's which delt mainly in seafood. Apparently they got a call of a car fitting my description... which i thought was rediculous. No ticket was issued, i wish i got a warning though, would've framed it!... the officer did ask "do you have any lobsters?" and i said "no!, you can check the car if you want to!" completely mystified as to what the hell was happening, and then he said "no... you dont have any lobsters.... i'd smell them if you had them..." i was destroyed after that, he said have a good night, and i just pulled into the gas station (about 20yards down the hill i was pulled over on) and got gas... haha
Tonight my friend and i got pulled after some 80+ runs to record his new exhaust on his '03 tiburon... they didint clock us so they just gave us a warning for a license plate bulb being out, which would've been a ticket if i hadn't explained that i worked for Autozone and the best way to diagnose an exhaust leak was to drive at high RPMs to see what it sounds like...she never questioned that this was at 2:30am and i was standing outside the car recording it in 25 degree weather hah... she told us to take the car home and stop driving up and down the highway... proof: hah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxTXaAzB-k0

Driving in the poorer side of LA, the lamest excuse I ever got was;
Me-"why did you stop me?"
Officer-"I stopped you because you have dealer plates on your car"
Me-"Yeah, I just got it" (I pointed at the DMV temporary registration paper plainly visible and not discolored)
Officer-"Well a lot of people around here drive around with dealer plates on to get around registering their car."

Sounds like you don't know anyone that's been killed by a drunk driver. Many an impaired-driver have been intercepted before being able to commit manslaughter because of routine traffic stops. If you don't want to be "messed with", then make sure your car is within the codes, which are in place for a reason.

one story
1.)one is back when i had a tiburon(no mods at the time) i was 18
It was about 1:20am, my friend, his gf, and i just dropped off my date and were heading home from a late movie. We are in a 30mph zone about to hit a 40mph zone when the light turns red. So i hit my breaks..The 40mph sign is right before the light. Light turns green, So i keep going next thing i know i see the cop flashing behind me. So i do the lights on, flashers on dance. He comes to the car and asks me if i know why i got pulled over?
"no officer."
He said "you were doing 35 in that 30."
"I said i just passed the 40mph sign"
"well then why did you hit you breaks once you saw me"
"the light turned red"
"have you been drinking"
"no sir i'm not of age, i just went to see a movie"
"everyone license" (3 of us in car)
"you sure you haven't been drinking?"
"yes officer"
came back after checked out all the licenses
"i'm gonna be nice and not give you a ticket for speeding, heres a ticket for obstructed view" (i had one of those little boxing gloves on my rear view"
I was once pulled over for an illegal lane change on the same lane I had traveled on after leaving the gas station. Obviously just a dumb excuse to pull me over.

lol.. all these are funny so far i have one gotten one ticket it was in the Bmw for tinted windows at the time they were 20% (but the tint o meter said the were 7%) it was about 2:00am raining and i was taking a couple of friends home i dont know how you knew i had tinted windows considering my back window wasn't tinted yet just the side and we were on the freeway and he was behind me the whole time me and my friends think he thought i was a drug dealer since we were on the bad side of town with a bmw not only that he felt he needed to call a K-9 unit and 2 other patrol cars(i nearly shyt myself when they all pulled up) iv also been pulled over in the Bmw for inpercinating an officer he said my front lights were flashing????? that was the least of my worrys considering i was 15 with no temps or anything but he was cool about it called my mom then told me to go straight home.... and the only time i have been pulled over in the A4 (by highway patrol) is because a bolt came off of my licence plate and it was at an angle(but not alot) but i dont think that he needed to throw me into the back of his car and search mine and started questioning why i had $200 in the car bein a little pissed off i replyed I do have a job and just got payed so he let me off with a warning?!?!?! for what idk
But I dont have a front licence plate
i have (toyota) dealership tags on my car (having issues with previous owner)
My windows are tinted, I speed
and i have yet to have a problem with police (they favor over audi's)

Here's mine. Cold night, Virginia night last winter when i was living on the East coast. A buddy and me were sitting in a Food Lion/Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot waiting on my girlfriend to get off work(yes she moved out here with me thank god). My friend and i were sitting in the lot, in what was my Camaro at the time, eating Taco Hell(bell), just chillen waitin. Well i had my lights on (headlights, dome lights, you name it), and we noticed a squad car pass us about 3 times, just starring. Well about 5 minutes after that, he pulls up, lights on, the stupid ass beam that blinds people off the side of their mirrors, and everything. Comes up to us saying "what are you doing here?" we responded, "Were eating dinner, see the taco bell cups. . . yadda yadda yadda. . . and I'm waiting on my girlfriend to get off". Officer asks for our licenses, ok thats fine, but to my supprise a black undercover pulls up on the passenger side blocking that side, and white undercover pulls in front of my car, and another squad car on my left. Sitting there for 30 minutes, listening to them bullshit, and my girlfriend calling me asking what in the hell was going on, the cop said before he left "son don't do drugs. . . ". My friend and i laughed so fuckin hard after that.

Man what a douche.
I got pulled over the othernight in Amherst Ohio, kinda known for pulling people over for stupid shit. Here's my story:
Driving around with my girlfriend (we're both 22), and see cop lights behind me. Pull over and turn hazards on, turn off car.
Cop comes up to my car "How are you two doing tonight"
Me "Good"
Cop "So where are you guy's going at this time of night"
Me "I believe that is none of your business, oh and why did you pull me over?"
Cop "Hey what's with the attitude?"
Me "Again, why did you pull me over"
Cop "Well it looked like the bulbs for your license plate was out"
Me "Well lets go take a look"
Get out of car, walk behind the car with cop, look at license plate. Brush hands and knock salt/dirt/grime off of lights.
Me "Looks like they work to me?!"
Cop "Yes it seems they were a little dirty"
Me "Well then, I guess the mistery is solved. I guess you have a good night"
Cop "Yes, drive safely...."

Back when I had my civic, i was pulled over for "failing to use a turn signal" when i "changed lanes." Well, actually it was a left-hand turn lane and i chose to go into the outer of the two lanes because the car in front of me was going like 25 in a 40 so i wanted to get around them. He tried pulling anything he could out of his ass to nail me for something. "oh you need to turn into the inner lane first, then signal to the outer lane." "Well if the other car wanted to change lanes they could've hit you" (yeah and it would've been their fault) "well if someone came out from the opposite side of the intersection and wanted to turn right, you could've hit them" (yeah, and they would've been running a red light...)
But yeah, first thing he said to me was "Do you always drive this fast?" I was going MAYBE 45 in a 40. Then he asks me to pop my hood and all that crap, so I ended up getting a modified exhaust ticket (for a bone stock air intake), noise violation (for an exhaust that passed at 91.8dB), and "failure to signal."
Everything was dismissed in court. :)

I was in a turn only lane at 12am on my way home from my girls apt. I worked 6am-6pm that day and was 2 turns away from my house less than a mile. I see the cop across from me about to turn the other way. So light turns green and i go, he pulls a u-turn and hits the lights. I tell him i'm coming from my girls house and my place is the next left turn up there. He says "why wasn't your tun signal on?" me "it was a turn only lane and i was the only one at the light until you got there, there is no use turn signal sign under the light" he said well thats because you were on your cell phone(illegal in ny while driving) and i wasn't but how could he see at 12am at night? So my insurence just expired 2 days earlier and i hadn't had a chance to put the new one in even tho it was at my place. So he gives me a ticket for expired insurence hahahaha

I had a modified 2000 Celica GT. It was my first modded car, I had replaced the park lights and side marker lights with green bulbs. I was driving through Hilliard, on the west side of Columbus here and a cop pulled me over because apparently the lights were illegal, which is fine. I thought it was lame, but perfectly legit. But the funny part was that he asked me if I knew why cars didn't come with green lights from the factory and the reason was that people wouldn't be able to tell if I was coming towards them or not.
I got a fix it ticket for the stuff. I swapped everything out, got my car inspected, then put everything back in.

Dont even get me started on lame reasons. I drive a Red B6 in the ghetto of Vancouver and I'm bald, so I get pulled over every time a cop gets behind me regardless of the situation.
Someone rear-ended me and cracked my light, I got pulled over for that, got a $120 ticket, they sent 3 officers and k9 unit to all pull up and shine their projectors at my car.
Then my bro borrowed the car, got a taillight ticket a block away, pulled away fast from the cop after getting a ticket, and got a ticket for speeding in my driveway.
Then I got a "visual" 40 in a 30, another $125. Court in 2 weeks on that one.
The last was the best. I pulled into a park parking lot, and instantly 2 cops blocked off the entrances, ran up to me, and grilled me for a half hour. Apparently someone had been driving recklessly, and the officers said that it was most likely me since my car looked fast. The asked questions like "Is your car fast?" "How fast does it go?" "Do you speed?" I basically told him thay my car is fast, that it goes 60 on freeways and 25 on the residential roads, told them they shouldnt hate on young bald people in nice cars, and "politely"...ahem... told them to leave. They said they will be looking out for me to so they could pull me over for speeding because I have a fast car. I Love it, I wasnt even driving and I got a half hour lecture on speeding.
Anyways, in the last two years: 3 no license tickets + 3 no insurance + 2 tailight + 4 speeding + 1 red light + 1 suspended license (now reinstated) + 1 SR22 + 18 years old = $300 monthly insurance payment with $1000 deductibles (includes student discount, good payer discount, loyalty bonus).

you must be a cop. How can you keep your car within the codes when the codes are "suspicion of stealing lobsters???" i could understand keeping your car within the codes of safe driving for ex. speeding, crossing a double yellow etc.. but defending those mother******s itching for a reason to pull you over is ridiculous.

I know in the city of new york, not the state, no tint is allowed on a 2-4 door car.....but on a truck, van, bus you can have w/e u want..
i was told by a nyc cop
Not true, 70% is the limit. I had 18% in the front, racked up 3 tickets for it. One of the tickets was because cop was being nice though, pulled me over for speeding and gave me tint instead.
I did get pulled over for having my rear fog lights on thought (98 a4's have 2 rear facing one on each side.) (I was using it to warn my friend in a s4 to slow down behind me as there was a cop oncoming, cop popped a turn and pulled me over instead of my friends nogaro)
Cop: You riding your brake there son?
Me: No? Whats wrong?
Cop: Let me see your brake lights (as he goes to the back I shut off the fogs). Press your brakes.
Me: On.. (Cop walks back over)
Cop: Everything seems alright, I saw two bright lights above where your brake lights are.
Me: Must've been an illusion.
Cop: Drive safely have a good night.
I was dying once he drove off ahaha.

got pulled over the other day and the cop told me my tint can blind other drivers ..... It is metallic but not that shinny like mirror tint....then he said he could shave in my tinted windows and that my nicely hardwired radar is illegal in some states i told him "i know its illegal in Virgina and D.C. then he told me my smoked plate frames are illegal and I said "really wow I didn;t know"[eek] after he ran my info he said "I'm giving you a ticket for illegal front tint, i dont care if you take it off or not then told me not to get my MBA because apparently everyone has a MBA and that I needed to get my MGA"......Didn't know I needed a Masters to become a cop...

I got pulled over a couple of months ago for no real reason as I was dropping off a friend at her house. Let just say that the area isn't the best so I wasn't really angry and surprised when the cops pulled me over. Though the conversation that followed was funny when the cop came up to my window. As I turned on the interior lights and rolled down my window he asked for my license, which I gave then after he ran it through the computer and saw that everything was okay he came back. To my surprise he started asking how I liked the car and how my overall ownership experience was. For a minute I was kinda lost though after I realized that he was just another enthusiast and not pulling a cop power trip anymore I started discussing the car with the guy. He stated that he was in the market for an A4, but was looking at the B6 with the 3.2 and asked how the B7 and the 2.0T was in comparison. I told him that it's definitely was worth stepping up and getting the B7 and the 2.0T and chipping would make up for the power difference while gaining better fuel economy. At the end, he said he'll definitely will drive one and check it out. After 5 minutes in the middle of road talking with the guy, the neighbors started looking outside and my friend looking ever more worried out her door became reason enough for me to cut the conversation short and I told the cop to have a goodnight.
That was probably one of the weirdest stops I had.

This seems to be a common topic of discussion on car forums. There may be a million reasons as to why you were stopped. Bottom line though is that it sounds like a pretextual stop to me. If you want further explanation on that google it... I just don't want to bore anyone with info they may or may not want.
I have not read the entire thread and I apologize if this has been addressed but many states have laws on the books prohibiting modifications. Not too many people know about them... and to make it worse, people think mods are OK because they are sold and installed in local area shops. Then, when they are stopped, they think the cop is BSing and wasting tax payer dollars.
Bottom line is, if you are concerned about being stopped for modifications don't mod. If you aren't doing anything illegal, when you are stopped... more than likely you have nothing to worry about. Pretext stops sort of provide an avenue to see if there is in fact, illegal activity beyond the scope of what is observed regarding the car.
In many cases the cop cannot see in the car (due to tint) and something else raises his/her suspicion. Tint is a reason to stop the vehicle. Don't take too much offense to it. After all if this was a drug deal or drive by taking place in your neighborhood (just to name a few scenarios that have happened) you would really appreciate that cop doing his work. Not to mention if he pulled an illegal gun out of the car.
Get online and check out your state and local municipality laws and regulations regarding mods - they can be very different from state to state and city to city. Here in CO... if you mod the suspension the penalty could be as stiff as a year in jail with a $1000 dollar fine! I don't know a cop that would cite for something like this... unless they were running specific enforcement but I know plenty who use these laws as tools to interdict other illegal activity. After all, someone has to do it so that you can feel safe driving your expensive car around without getting jacked for it [;)]
I could go on and on.... but I will stop [drive]
O and by the way... a cop can stop you based on reasonable suspicion that you have modified your car. They do not have to have PC.... dam hollywood!

bottom line is that police should have the right to stop anybody at any time. there are no quotas to meet and no hidden agendas.....and to every "dick" cop there are 1000 good ones just trying to do their job. you complain about getting pulled over for petty shit but you need to account for how many drugs and guns are off the streets, how many crimes have been prevented and how many cops have been shot down on "routine traffic stops".

I wanted to say my darker skin in a 100% cracker white neighborhood, but refrained. I ahnd him my regi and insuraunce and he asks me at least 5 times is the car yours, is it stolen. I'm no idiot I see where this is goin. I'm stopped for DWB when i'm not even black. I go no, says my brake lights are all out. I say go to the back of the car and I got ur weeks pay vs my 2 days pay that they are indeed working. He refuses, sees my boost gauge, then starts walkin around the car Looking for shit. Sees I have no front plate and starts askin what other car is it on. I say no other car I don't like the looks of it. Then he asks to search my car to which now i'm fuming I reply "Over my dead body" he asks what thats suppose to mean and I just sit there glaring at the little prick. Goes back to his car, comes back nearly 40 minutes later with 4 tickets, No front plate, right brake light out, left brake light out, no insuraunce as my insurance card wasn't valid until mid-week that week as my policy just renewed, but i have insurance and when he ran my info in the computer it came up because with how big of a dick this guy was he woulda towed my car. So it was 180 bucks in fix it tickets and the insurance I didn't do jack shit about and it got dismissed automatically. In NYC u can bring the car to a precient b4 sunset the next day. It was 6ish and I was heading to school, then I was 2 beat to take it. had work at 6am and again went straight to school so time is up. So I forged a mechanic receipt for that evening and just mailed it in saying that at 6;15 of the day in question there was no problem with my brake lights and got the ticket dismissed. Had to pay 60 for the front plate though. I hope the cops mother dies of cancer, racist pig cause obviously his mom didn't raise that ignorant bastard right.

my parents were driving my car and got pulled over and the cop told them he pulled them over for my dope stickers and that he was looking to pull over some teenagers (not a couple of 50 year olds hahaha). he gave my parents a lecture on what "dope" is and that having a sticker of a drug on your car is bad hahaha, my parents were just like you gotta be kidding me. In the end no ticket because the cop didn't find any dope smoking teenagers in the car haha

bottom line is that police should have the right to stop anybody at any time. there are no quotas to meet and no hidden agendas......

Sounds like you don't know anyone that's been killed by a drunk driver. Many an impaired-driver have been intercepted before being able to commit manslaughter because of routine traffic stops. If you don't want to be "messed with", then make sure your car is within the codes, which are in place for a reason.

Now why would you have to go there? [confused]
My high school sweetheart was killed because she sat next to a drunk driver. My best friend said he wasn't drunk and gave her a ride to my house from a party that I wasn't at. As they neared my place he ran the car off the road into an already mangled guardrail that sliced through the windshield, her, and the rest of the car. I heard the crash and ran to help out not realizing who it was or that she would die in my arms a few minutes later. Another friend was in the back seat and went without breathing for too long and suffered irreparable brain damage. After a month or two or depression, mania, and binge drinking my friend Rob shot himself while on the phone with me. I didn't touch a phone for more than a year and didn't date for a few more. 18 years later I still have an occasional nightmare.
Any you know what??? I do get pissed when getting stopped for nothing. My neighbor is a cop and his brother is a detective and I fully support them. On the other hand, I got pulled over in a convertible with the top and windows down and the cop waited for backup units to arrive before approaching my car. I was wearing a shirt and tie, cufflinks, the works and looked like I was either going to church or a business meeting. I did nothing wrong and got no ticket.
You know why I get pissed? Because that idiot and those backup units aren't out looking for drunk drivers because they are too busy wasting otherwise valuable time on innocents like me.
Something interesting happened a couple weeks ago when I had jury duty. During the selection process the attorneys asked us all a list of questions. One was whether or not we would believe the sworn testimony of an officer above a regular citizen. The few that said yes were dismissed. I said that although I'd like to believe that someone pursuing a career in law enforcement has the purest of intentions and integrity beyond reproach, internal affairs departments seem to keep quite busy. That statement got me out of a 5 day case.

Cop trying to do his job and be polite, seems like you, my friend, were being a douche[down]

I got pulled over for driving correctly.
I was making a left turn at a stop light. It turned green i then turned into the far left lane. (only two lanes for my direction) Then signaled to go to the right lane which was my neighborhood and he pulled me over. Came up to me and asked me if i had been drinking!! I said no i hadn't been. He said ok and went to his car. He came back and said this is a warning for Inattentive driving, and have a good night. I was shocked he even bothered to give me a warning for driving how i was taught to drive!!

Not necessarily lame or an excuse, but funny. Looking back of course.
(Referring to story below, not above. I'm so sorry for your loss onemoremile and everyone involved in that horrible experience)
Got pulled over and was asked if I was aware that there were underwear flying from my antenna. The antenna he spoke of was directly in front of me and was of my awesome red 80 something Cavalier Type 10. I was a bit of a smart-alec way back then and said yes with a smile and nod, took my foot off the brake and started to roll away. I made it about 5 feet before my senses kicked in and stopped and looked back and asked if there was anything else? Of course by then I was not on his good graces.
Had my boxers flying from the antenna on my way home from a random decision to jump off a bridge into a lake. I was 17 I think, maybe 16. I was trying to dry them faster, also, mind you this was in New Orleans on the Saturday before Mardi Gras, perfectly normal behavior. Didn't get a ticket for that though. He asked me to step out of the car and saw that I wasn't wearing shoes and that we had a very large white goose with a spiked collar in the rear hatch. Got two tickets. Apparently you can't drive barefoot in Louisiana or carry uncaged fowl in the passenger cabin. He called animal control and they took our "Mother". We never saw her again.
In short,
Reason for stop: Underwear flag.
Reason for ticket: Driving barefoot, Mother Goose in back seat.

Not too much of a ticket, a slap on the wrist really - but we have these people that keep tabs on our parking lots with absurd precision, sort of. I pulled in at 9:30 and by 9:44 I had a ticket for parking in a restricted lot with no window sticker. Fine. However, upon further inspection my car was labeled as a 'BMW A4', which on the surface is quite amusing considering the four rings on the front and rear of every audi, but upon further though I have shaved badges - meaning he/she had to recognize the vehicle as an A4 but apparently I own the only BMW A4 in the world. Maybe it'll go up on ebay for $300,000...but i find in these cars you do not get harassed nearly as much as in older, cheaper vehicles. I have yet to get pulled over in the A4 driving somewhat aggressively, yet have been routinely harassed in my old 89 pickup or 94 taurus SHO.

Yeah I've seen a BMW A4, they are really rare in my area though..[:D]
What's weird is my situation is the total opposite of you. I used to drive a semi-modified Yukon XL aggressively for 6 years and I've never been pulled over. I've had my Audi for 8 months and drive like a great grandmother yet I get pulled over every month for the silliest things like not making a FULL stop before making a right turn at an intersection. Omg.....that has to be one of the most chilling stories I have heard......I can't begin to express my sympathies onemoremile..........I am so sorry...........
I actually have respect for cops who seek out drunk drivers for this very reason; to prevent such horrific accidents from happening.
I recently got into a road rage encounter on Labor Day with some douchebag in a Dodge truck who thought he had a fast car and wanted to pin me behind some Prius. I cut his ass off, and kept cutting him off as he tried to go around me. He then followed me for a good while, but as an Audi is much more nimble than a big Dodge, I was able to lose him. Not my best moments on the road, but I just hate when assholes in big trucks act like they own the road because of their frankly stupid car choice, with all things considered these days.
My girlfriend was meeting me at my apartment, which requires street parking at times. She found a spot on the street, but called my cellphone nervous, saying a cop had pulled in behind her with his parking lights on (but not his siren lights). She couldn't figure out what/who they were waiting for.
I get back, pull up next to her car to make sure she's ok, then flip a U to go back into my apartment complex lot. Not a moment after I pass the cop car...BLIP! lights go up. I pull over, and wait for the officer. He comes up, and says he got a report of a grey Audi with plates matching mine that was "weaving on the highway as if the driver was drunk." The GOD DAMN PRICK who STARTED SHIT in the first place had the NERVE to report me as a drunk driver.
Needless to say, I drank a fair amount that day at the beach with my girlfriend, but confidently knew I was under the legal limit. I dealt very amicably with the cops, did all their little hoop-jumping tests, and finally got the breathalyzer, with my girlfriend watching in terror the entire time. During the process, I even commended the cops on their thorough check to find my address and wait for me, because I'd hope they'd do the same for me should I report a legitimately drunk driver.
Now I wasn't drunk, but I had defintely had some beers and part of a mixed drink that afternoon....miraculously, I somehow blew a 0.00%. Some part of me thinks the cop saw my good nature and willingness to cooperate, and didn't actually have the device on. In the end, I'm only angry that a prick who asked for what he got would stoop to such a level and try to get me in trouble for a DUI. The cops were just doing their job and the responsible thing, and it's stuff like that which can prevent accidents like the one that has plagued onemoremile for years.
That is all, back to work! [race]

Damn that's a crazy story and in my opinion it definitely pays to cooperate with police as I've gotten out of a few situations using that technique. That was really a douche thing to do if the guy driving the truck called the cops... However you never know, it also could have been another person on the road. Too bad you didn't get the truck's plates, you could have then reported him smoking rocks and snorting powder off 'what looked like a hooker's ass.'

After 5 years of breakinig every traffic law known to man and beast, I finally got popped Saturday morning.
Cop: "Do you know you were going 50 in a 30?"
Me: "Yep, the surf is going off and I don't want to miss it!"
Cop: "I know there is a contest, but this is a park and there are kids on both sides of the road."
Me: "I'm not going to the contest, I'm going to surf by myself. Can I have my ticket now?"
Cop: "Grumble grumble" and takes his time writing it out! Like I'm going to kiss his small town copper ass to try to get out of it! I knew I deserved it and $200 is a small price to pay for all the speeding I've done over the last 5 years that I didn't get caught for! [:p]

Nope, there's no way it was another driver, I was goin' way too fast for anyone else on the highway to pin my plates; at first I thought he was trying to follow me to confront me, but calling in my plates was what he was really doing.
I'm a strong believer in karma, so he'll prolly get a DUI himself soon; not to mention he prolly chewed thru half his dumb-ass Dodge truck's gas tank trying to keep up with me. [>_<]

It was a nice afternoon and the windows were down. I was sitting at a light playing T.I.'s new song "Life Your Life". My volume I believe I was at 20 on my stock stereo. I have two 12" Alpine Type R's which bump pretty loud.
So little did I know there was a cop a few cars behind me. I make my left turn and I see the cop pull behind me passing cars and flip the lights on. I pulled over asking myself what the fuck did I do now? I then lowered my music.
He comes up to my window and asks for my license, registration, blah blah. I handed it over and preceded to ask why I was getting pulled over. He told me my bass was shaking his car and he was unable to hear his disbatcher. I smirked and asked if he was being serious, and surely he was.
He let me go and told me to keep the music down, I pulled away and when he turned off the road put it back up. I'm not one to blast my music but that's why I have subs.

i got pulled over about 2 months ago for speeding. i was going home after a late movie, and i had to drop off some of my friends. so i was speeding. i got popped for 18 over.... w/e. the cop was a chick and i gave her my whole story, hoping she would let me off with a warning. all of a sudden i see another cop car pull up. and its like the chief of police or w/e u call it. he walks over to the passenger side window and we told him that we had just seen indiana jones. Then randomly he starts to say, Now my neighbors... and i instantly thought he was going to give us some speech about speeding, but he says my neighbors said that they set up indiana jones for a sequel. and we had like a 10 minute discussion about indiana jones. finally the other cop came back and said im gonna have to issue you a speeding ticket. and the cop at passenger window said "buzzkill" and walked away. that was my weirdest stop.
and about a year ago. i was having some fun in an icy parking lot. and right when i was about to leave i did one final 180 spin. and right when i spun around an unmarked cop car flew in with its lights on. the cop was such a douche. he started telling us how we were going to kill ourselves. he then talked about how he had put teenagers in body bags. then he sorta yelled at us saying "do you want your parents to see you in a body bag". I didnt know wtf to say to that especially since we were going 10-15 mph tops... anyway the dumb ass cop gave me a ticket for reckless driving, then wrote "vehicle not under control(icy conditions)". the judge threw it out and i smiled at the cop when i walked out of the courtroom.
