View Full Version : My engine build part 2 - swain tech coated parts

I finally got my exhaust manifold, turbine housing and downpipe back from Swain Tech with their White Lightning ceramic coating on them.

The coating is pretty thick and is very gritty to the touch.

Now that the parts are installed it's time to break in the new clutch and engine and see if this reduces heat as advertised.

Nice, I like the polished SS look better. I really doubt that can do too much but never hurts to try I guess

That style coating has been used on v8 cars headers for years. It's good stuff, as long as no oil gets on it if it's hot, stains easily.

ah very good choice . we only use swain on our turbo applications etc.. being that was all that was used on the race cars. im sure you will absolutely love it .. just try not to handle it much cause the oils will stain the coating and print it up

Winston,
I like how you post "my finished build" unlike other posts "my future build" that go on for 9 months...[up][up]

Thanks for the heads up. I did take the car around the block once but nothing really got hot by doing that. I heard a clunk and freaked out that something broke or fell off. Turns out it was a ratchet we forgot to take out beside the battery. [:p]

I'll take some brake cleaner and scrub off the grease before I break the engine in tomorrow.

Wait until you see what it is all going to look like when I'm done. [wrench]

Winston,

If I had to drag this build out for 9 months I'd probably go into mad depression, part out my Avant and go buy Volvo

Sweet Winston! Who made the dp and manifold?

Redgoat

I thought you wanted to have a ceramic coating on the inside of the exducer that way the heat didnt sit there and heat up the turbine.. and the coating on the outside just holds it in..

Wouldnt it be better to coat the inside and outside of the manifold and turbine??

My thoughts on this is that way the parts dont get hot the heat just flows through, if it isnt coated on the inside the parts just get really hot and have no way to get the heat off of the parts.

thoughts on this?

You want to keep heat inside the exh. not dissipate it.

Redgoat
12-23-2007, 03:15 PM
If im thinking correctly gasses flow faster when they are hotter, correct?

I thought coating the inside would push the heat through faster, therefor keeping the temps of the parts (manifold, turbine housing) lower.

Wouldnt just coating the outside allow the parts to get hotter than normal.

I always thought it was advised to coat the inside and the outsides allowing the gasses to flow faster and keep the parts cooler.

I may be totally wrong on all of this, but hey.. thats why im here. To learn [;)]

It's no different than wrapping a TP. You want to keep the heat inside for better scavenging.

Redgoat
12-23-2007, 04:15 PM
So would you see any benefit from coating the inside as well?

Silence
12-23-2007, 04:46 PM
No, even if it did help, you would cause a restriction in flow, which would be much worse at the speeds exhaust gases move.

Sweet Winston! Who made the dp and manifold?

Blitzkrieg hand made the exhaust manifold and downpipe with integrated highflow cat.

winston@podi.ca

As the others have stated you coat the outside to keep the heat in so the gases stay as hot as possible.

You don't want to coat the inside of the manifold or the turbine housing as it would change its flow characteristics. And if a small piece of the coating flaked off it would cause damage to the turbine blades.

Here is the description of the White Lightning product: http://swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10969

$425 to coat all 3 parts

The 3 day shipping via UPS there and back cost almost as much. [:(]

Sick as always. I went cheap route and just wrapped and did turbo blanket. Really helped on all temps and also my turbo hits full boost almost 200RPM sooner.
Your car is always making me want to start modding.... again.

Well the question I had to ask myself is this:

Is 5 days of downtime worth $200?

Did someone say turbo blanket? [:p]

I'm hoping the coating, turbo blanket (if required) and extra displacement will give 400-600rpm faster spool.

The turbo blanket >>> than any heat shield.

The Swain Tech coating cost $50 more than the turbo blanket so it might be something you want to consider.

Otherwise you can buy one of these blankets from Alamo Motorsports at alamo_wholesale (at) yahoo (dot) com

More info on the blankets here: http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:2LgmKeDuKBkJ:www.miataturbo.net/showthread.php%3Ft%3D5990

I really got it because it covered up the hot side of the turbo so when it turns its wonderful brown color its not quite as visible. Also to match the polished compressor, I didnt really expect to gain anything from it, just wanted something different looking
