Hey u guys, I am looking at purchasing an 2000 S4 right now that has 63K miles on it. The owner does not know if the timing belt has been changed yet or not but is checking with the dealership that has cared for the car since conception. If the belt has not been changed, is this a major issue? How many miles should the original get before being changed?

I have an A4 now, and when I bought it with 70K on it the belt broke 4K miles later on the freeway. Thing spent 3 months in the shop cause the valves were toast and needed new header.. Thank God for Audi Assured Warranty. Job cost $3,000 but I paid $.00 . I want to make sure I dont get stuck with a Timing Belt job right off the bat, or if I do I want to make sure i negotiate that into the price.

Any suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Jeesh, I saw this Thread earlier and was waiting for an S4 owner to chime in.

Well anywho, definitely work in a timing belt job if you can. Anywhere around the 60-70k mark is a good time to get it done on an A4, wouldn't wait much longer than that. Had mine done at 60k, just to be on the safe side, didn't want what happened to your A4 to happen to mine. As you know, it ain't pretty!

Best o' luck. [;)]

i haven't heard of too many s4's breaking the timing belt but it wouldn't hurt to change it soon.

actually i know of someone that is selling his 2001.5 S4 located in socal ... hopefully he'll chime in soon [;)]

I might be wrong, but my dealer told me they usually replace the timing belt during the 60k servide warranty.

Actually I have an S4 at 65K, and Ive spoken to VW specialties as well as another shop in La, and they both said 80K is the Timing belt maintaince schedule. and the S4 owner that Derek is speaking of is me. PM if you are interested. We can discuss any issues you may have.

the timing belt can be a very expensive job, upwards of 2500 at the stealership. the parts can be had for around 300-350 and done over the course of a day and about a case of beer between a couple few friends. we are organzing a timing belt g2g to help other group members out to get this done. i believe the 60K service is when the dealer will change it. i would have to check out my bentley to veryidy, but it should be done roughly every 60-80k miles.

Ok tell me this, the guy I'm looking to buy this from called the dealership to ask this questions (i have not called to verify yet but will), says the dealership told him that on 2000 S4's the recommended TB change is not until 104K miles.

I said "104K" WTF!!! No way.. what u think?

I'm pretty sure the timing belt is recommened to be done at 60k. I'm not looking forward to getting this done b/c it's not cheap.

http://duc.aowc.net/user/14012/images/stupid.gif Yes, 104K is Audi's recommended mileage for the 2.7L Turbo.

Check the maintenance schedule checklists here (Bentley's Tech library):
Audi Maintenance Schedules (http://www.bentleypublishers.com/tech/audi/?stickyEmail=&ticket=none)
