I have been lurking on this forum ever since I saw the first picture of the S5. I put my deposit down in early July, and my order in August. I have the dealer’s first allocation.
I was so excited when the dealer called and said they had a demo early last week. Finally got some time yesterday, and went straight to the dealer.
No complaints about the drive, or the V8 rumble. I was just not stunned by the looks. Everyone on here has been raving about how much better it looks in person. I left disappointed. The exterior looks better in pictures; maybe that was the meteor gray (the color I ordered). The cd changer/ center console was plastic and looked cheap.
I am going to go back this weekend with realistic expectations. Maybe I was in a bad mood. It didn’t help that the exterior was dirty, there was grass all over the floor mats, and the back seats were folded down. Not sure if the previous test drive included lumber delivery or a lawn service.
The positive…… the backseats fold forward. There may not be much room for passengers, but with the ample trunk and seats down you may in fact be able to deliver lumber.
Don’t attack me, this was my first impression, and I will give it another go this weekend.

dude, i dont think anyones going to be pissed or anything, I mean its your opinion... Im selling my car for an S5 as well and though i like it I was a little ticked that the sunroof only goes up and doesnt actually open, I also am not a fan of the side grills, the are cheap plastic and not opened, i mean the ones on my b6 look better... it just ticked me off cause we are paying for a 50 thousand dollar car and dont even get a damn sunroof? though to me the looks are nice but your right it wasnt the "angels singing" experience i was hoping for, is it a damn good car, yes, is it a let down if youve been listening to everyone on here? yes... nothing is ever as good if you walk into it with the highest of expectations, its just the way it is... hope you end up happy with the car though! and give it a second shot

I got to sit in one yesterday, I felt immediately at home. I loved the way it felt. And loved the looks. The lines were very sexy. But, it did look big, bigger then a 3 series BMW. I'm not sure what the exact numbers are, but I thought they were suppose to be pretty close in size. It may just be the lines that give it that impression of being big.
My only disappointment, is that I can't even think about getting on until late next year, 2009 model [:(]

I love it, i just drove it early today, meteor grey and red interior. The only thing i don't like is that I can't hear exhaust and engine sound in the cabin!!

I too drove the car today, and wow. I am in love. Everything about the car was glorious from my perspective. The red interior is perfect and everything on the inside flows so seamlessly. My A4 is nice but the new chassis and interior is a huge divergence, and a very clear step up...and I thought the grey looked amazing, especially wrapped around those red seats [:D][:D][:D]

Well that would be my choice, but thats just me......
I have a feeling the day the "perfect" car is launched hell will freeze over.
Btw, interesting read on "the perfect car" from Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson:

Speaking of disappointments, I visited the local Audi dealership yesterday with my buddy to see what was new/exciting. Turns out all the cars for the local Audi Driving Experience were there, including several R8s, S5s, RS4/RS4 cabs, etc. It was my first time seeing an S5 in the metal (and the R8 in colors other than silver/white).
My impressions:
The S5 is not as jaw-droppingly beautiful as everyone says. I think it's much nicer looking than the 3-series coupe, but I think both the new G37 coupe and even the new C-Class Sport look more interesting. The interior was the only place I felt jealous - it really is a work of art. Just my opinion, but if I was ordering an S5, I'd get the red interior with aluminum accents - it was money.
The R8 is not a good-looking car at all. The only one I'd even consider was a Jet Blue one with carbon sideblades. It was pretty dope. Also, for anyone considering an R8, DO NOT skip the carbon engine package. It makes a huge difference.
Sorry I didn't take pics - I didn't know this was going on until I got there.

Yes the sunroof is the same as in the BMW 6 Series. Tilt only. Not a huge fan of that, would almost rather have none at all.

Not sure what you've heard, but the new V8 M3 has about 420hp and 295lb ft. The now old M3 had 333hp/262lb ft. of torque and regularly achieved
0-60 in 4.7 and the 1/4 mile in 13.3 at 106-107mph.
So, the new S5 is in line with the old M3.
The new M3 has much more power than the older M3.
BMW always publishes low performance numbers. I don't know why, but I have read that they do that because they achieve their numbers based on driving "normally". Thus, they don't rev up the engine and drop the clutch or any such common enthusiast antics that will achieve much faster times.
I seriously doubt the new S5 will be able to keep up with the more powerful new M3, considering the S5 is more competitive with the outgoing 333hp M3.
So, yes the S is keeping up with the old M3.
The RS4 is much closer to the new M3 in terms of performance.

I went back this weekend, and have to admit it is a nice car. It likely will be my next car. It looks nice clean, with the seats up, and without all the grass.
I was locked in, but now that the blinders off will consider other options. Four year old Expedtion, New M3, extra parking space, possible? With Audi residuals in the US, likely. Not sure why, but unlikely, I am not a fan of BMW.
Thanks for all your responses

Looks are subjective - which also means, if you're in a better mood, it looks better.
I finally saw and drove one on Monday. I thought it looked bigger and better in person than I expected. The interior was great, and after driving it fairly hard I thought it had better balance than even an RS4.
My only disappointment? Steering is still too numb compared to a 335i or even a G37 coupe. Audi still won't let you feel what the front wheels are doing enough for my taste. But I'm still getting the S5 in the spring..

Only saw pictures for a loong time, and I never saw enything special about the S5 in those. A nice new Audi car, but .. that's all.
I finally saw the car a few days ago, I must say I was extremely impressed by the S5.. everything, inside and outside. Especially outside, it's the best looking Audi ever.

Went back to the dealer for a third time this weekend... After some debate I changed from Meteor to Quartz Gray. Wanted to go phantom black, but knew it would never be clean. My parking garage has open sides, and it would be dirty the morning after I washed it.
It wasn't the ordeal I expected. The dealer just changed the invoice in the computer. Pulled it back up, and it was accepted. Hope that is all it takes!
Thanks again for all the replies, now it is back to the waiting game.

Good Luck with your car quantoc. Fortunately I get to drive one everyday If I want to.
To me, the looks are subtle and not drastically stand-offish.
I wish you well. I get a ton of looks when I am out in an S5. For some reason I love 3rd gear in these cars too. It just seems to hit hard when you lay on her.....!

The final chapter... Got the call I was expecting yesterday. The color change didn't take. In addition my car was pushed back to Mid December.
What to do? My current lease is up at the end of the month. I stopped by the dealer on a whim today to decide if I reallly wanted the Meteor.
Turns out two loaded Phantom Black S5's, arrived on a truck today. Suffice it to say, I pick it up my new car on Friday.
